With CPep injured, its looking more and more like it will be Stafford...Lions beat writer Brian VanOchten believes that Matt Stafford clinched the starting quarterback job on his impressive first series Thursday night.Stafford hit Calvin Johnson for 36 and 28 yards on the opening drive before a 34-yard TD was called back on a holding penalty. His fumble came on a blind-side sack by rookie Aaron Maybin, and the interception was the result of Keary Colbert slipping and falling. Neither turnover was Stafford's fault, and his final numbers should have looked much better. Coach Jim Schwartz said after the game that he'll announce his final decision "when the time is right."
The Lions were competitive in a few games last season, but always managed to blow it. Their division has really improved over the last couple years, so it will hard for them to win games in their division with their youth right now, but I think they will give some teams a game this year. I'm not a Lions fan, but I'd love to see them get some wins this year. Culpepper has obviously worked hard in the offseason and is supposed to be in great shape, except for the latest freak toe injury. I wouldn't be surprised if his toe is healthy enough to see him start the season based on his veteran experience and recent hard work, but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised to see Stafford start since he will be put in eventually this year, and he has shown some flashes of being able to handle starting this season. I think Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith will have good seasons with whichever QB starts. He looks ready to start so why not. The Lions wont be competitve this year so as long as you can protect him give him the reigns.

I don't think you want a part of this QB situation. Cutting them and letting someone else deal with it wouldn't be a bad idea either.Any updates on this situation? I hate keeping both Daunte and Stafford as my QB3 and would like to drop one of them ASAP.
I still don't think sotry and trade2 spots tied up and a guy like Brooks Bollinger might also keep the seat warm for Stafford. Browns QBs on teams? Bucs QB? How much does a zero hurt you? Week 6 bye to cover, no way would I tie up two roster spots for half my FF season on two guys I dislike for FF. Do something bro. We're in a start 2 QB league, so I need a QB3 for bye weeks. There are no other starting QBs available, so these are my guys.
bad defense= passing offenses playing catch-up, if you add in the most athletically gifted WR of our time, that = fantasy sleeper when you consider both have the arm strength to get it there deep. The starter has QB1 upside, so it is definitely worth holding onto them. Look what Moss did for whoever was QB in Linehan's system in Minnesota. That was the same recipe back then.I don't think you want a part of this QB situation. Cutting them and letting someone else deal with it wouldn't be a bad idea either.Any updates on this situation? you realize a guy named Calvin Johnson plays in Detroit, right?I still don't think sotry and trade2 spots tied up and a guy like Brooks Bollinger might also keep the seat warm for Stafford. that's all we got is beat writer suggestions from what I can find. Maybe the staff wants Indy to spend time preparing for Dante's mobility?Personally, I'd be shocked if Stafford wasn't the week 1 starter. He's looked great this preseason and was the talk of camp, plus Culpepper may not even be healthy enough to start right now.
I was very lukewarm on the pick myself, but I have to say he has a freaking cannon for an arm, and can throw balls i've seen very few QBs be able to throw. That first long completion to Calvin down the sideline was an incredible pass and hit him perfectly in stride....if his pinky toe hadn't hit the sideline as he evaded the safety coming over, that would have been a 92 yd TD. In short, Stafford has been extremely impressive, and the way he can get the ball downfield, I think he and Calvin could be something special. In contrast, all I saw from Daunte on anything longer than 15 yards was just chucking it up and hoping someone catches it. the one bomb he threw wasn't remotely catchable...basically a punt.I was against the draft pick all year, but my money is on him starting week 1. I've been impressed, let the pain begin for the rook.

QB1 upside???Dude, comparing the Vikings to the Lions at any time in the last 5-10 years is insane and an insult to anyone who lives in Minnesota. I realize that CPepp is there now and so is Linehan, and Calvin Johnson has Randy Moss like skills.......but so what? Culpepper isn't the same player he was 5-6 years ago, the dude can only keep a roster spot on the Lions. Heck, the Raiders sent him packing.THe Lions are a joke and people in this thread are talking about teams preparing for CPepp's "mobility" like the dude has the juice he had 6 years ago.
Culpepper should start for now simply cause Stafford is NOT ready yet. The entire franchise is a joke and this team lost EVERY game last year. All of a sudden ONE player is ready to lead them out of the cellar? Stafford has looked decent in preseason but only in flashes. For every decent pass he's thrown against 2nd string defenses he's also thrown lousy passes and picks. If they throw him to the Wolves he'll average 200 yards 1 TD and 3-4 picks per game.Did I mention once anything about them winning any games? We are talking fantasy football here. I said their Defense is gonna suck again which means they'll be passing to play catch-up. Screens to Smith, Pettigrew working the middle of the field, & bombs to Calvin will give whoever is starting at QB oodles of opportunities. You are completely missing the point. Culpeppers' career season was when the Vikings had an 8-8 record not during one of their good seasons. His 2nd best season was when they were 6-10. Wins & losses have nothing to do with fantasy productionCulpepper does look mobile now. He's lost like 40 lbs and his knee is completely healthy for the 1st time since 2005. It's apparent you haven't watched any Lions preseason gamesbad defense= passing offenses playing catch-up, if you add in the most athletically gifted WR of our time, that = fantasy sleeper when you consider both have the arm strength to get it there deep. Stafford it is. Go CALVIN JOHNSON!!!ESPN.com's Adam Schefter reports Detroit Lions HC Jim Schwartz has announced that QB Matthew Stafford is the team's starting quarterback.
I like this move. It's inevitable anyway, so let him in there to get his feet wet.Stafford it is. Go CALVIN JOHNSON!!!ESPN.com's Adam Schefter reports Detroit Lions HC Jim Schwartz has announced that QB Matthew Stafford is the team's starting quarterback.
No comparison. Those were all reaches by the Lions. Stafford is a legitimate stud quality QB.This is going to be just like Joey Harrington. Just like Rodney Peete.Just like Andre Ware. The Lions need to try to bring him in slowly with an offensive line that will not get him killed and ruin him as an NFL QB.
That organization can kill a QB especially as a rookie.jon_mx said:No comparison. Those were all reaches by the Lions. Historically, probably the worst organization in all of major sports. But there is different management, different coaches, and different players. We will see. That organization can kill a QB especially as a rookie.jon_mx said:No comparison. Those were all reaches by the Lions.
