Lions trade Bly to Broncos (1 Viewer)

It's been confirmed by the DPO that Denver gives their fifth, and gets detroits sixth. Seperated by about 15 picks and worth about 15 points.

Maybe they will draft a QB in Rd 1. If they do, however, it would go against everything they have said in the last year. Not just draft smokescreen, but everything during the season also.
Circumstances change quickly in the NFL.
From Killer Kowalski, the Lions beat writer:

If the Lions get both Bell and Foster, it will have a profound impact on their draft and would likely mean that they'll definitely trade down. With Bell and Foster on the roster, the need for Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas or Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson is gone. The Lions would have more motivation to trade down a few spots and go after a defensive end like Gaines Adams or Jamaal Anderson. Or trade a few more spots and grab Mississippi middle linebacker Patrick Willis.
It takes two to tango. Although I suppose I wouldn't put it past Matt Millen to trade down with himself and get a lower draft pick with no compensation.
for all the #### millen gets, don't forget he engineered the trade down ONE spot with cleveland to get ROY and KJ a couple of years ago. dropping one spot for a 2nd is pretty nice...Millen deserves the credit for that.

Good stuff from the Broncos. They got rid of two guys they were basically done with anyways, and now have arguably the best cornerback tandem in the league.
Arguably the best tandem? Without question, the Broncos now have the best tandem in the league. IMO, before Bly, the Broncos had the best with Champ and Darrent Williams (RIP). Dominique Foxworth is also an incredible cover corner. He started one game this year for the Broncos against the Bengals (due to Williams injury), and had 14 tackles and one INT. He limited TJ Housh to only 1 catch. I was really looking forward to seeing him develop into the starters role, but as a Broncos fan, I cannot be upset with the aquiring of Dre' Bly, one of the best in the game.

As a Lions fan, I'm kinda happy about the trade. Bly was pretty much gone after 2007 to FA. I think he's still an above-average cornerback, and it will hurt not having him. But I think they got some good value out of him. Bell will do decent in Detroit, and will help a lot with Jones out for who knows how long...

It is very possible that the days of "RB Denver" being worth 40 off-season threads are over. "RB Denver" this year produced the #30 and #31 RBs. Denver RBs scored a total of 11 TDs in 2006. Even if there were less of a work split, the top Denver RB wouldn't have been worth his draft position or the endless speculation.

Don't know if it's been said yet or not but I think the Lions are targeting Leon Hall. He ran a great 40 and has been STELLAR against the run throughout his collegiate career. He's everything a cover 2 defense needs in a CB and last I checked the Lions are now left with Stanley Wilson and Keith Smith (I'm not even going to mention a certain CB who played at Jacksonville...). I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them trade down to get Leon.

And fantasy owners sat on Gary for years after, hoping he'd regain that Denver form. Don't be that owner. The other similarity is that they are both VASTLY overrated for playing in said Denver system.1. If Tatum Bell was all that, he wouldn't have been traded in a two-for-one, especially for Dré Bly :hey: .2. If Tatum Bell was all that, he should have been THE MAN in Denver.
Years? He played for the Lions for one season (2003). The only reason any fantasy owner had any interest in him at all in the one season he played for the Lions was because of panic after James Stewart got injured in the final preseason game, at which point IIRC, the Lions signed him off the street. He was a starting RB, which meant he had some potential fantasy value. But no one was expecting much. He was three years removed from his big season, and hadn't shown anything close to that after his injury.Regarding your other points:1. Shanahan has shown that he values quality CBs over RBs in the past when he traded Portis for Bailey. Whatever you think about Bly, he's still regarded as a upper-tier cover man in the NFL. Bell isn't on the same level as Portis, but neither is Bly on the same level as Bailey. 2. Tatum Bell was "THE MAN" in Denver, until he got turf toe in both feet this past season. There's no denying that when he was healthy, he received the majority of the carries. And no, I'm not a Tatum Bell owner or apologist, or a blind Detroit homer.

From Killer Kowalski:

-- This trade also has a huge impact on the draft because it means the need to consider either Joe Thomas or Adrian Peterson has diminished. And, since the Lions aren't taking a quarterback or Calvin Johnson, they're the wild card at the No. 2 overall pick.

Right now, the odds of the Lions moving down to Arizona's pick at No. 5 are very strong. The Cardinals want Thomas to begin rebuilding that line and the Lions have no fear that the guy they really want -- Gaines Adams -- won't still be there. (The Lions were thrilled when Thomas, Johnson and Peterson turned in eye-popping performances at the combine -- it greatly increased the value of their No. 2 pick).

It's even possible the Lions could move down twice because Cleveland (No. 3) and Tampa Bay (No. 4) have other guys they want to target. Regardless, the Lions are extremely likely to trade down now, which means Millen will likely use his increased ammunition to move back up into the bottom of the first round.

Their targets? Mississippi middle linebacker Patrick Willis or Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton. The Lions were raving about these two players after the combine and not just because they worked out well but because they know them extremely well as players and people.

Wait, you ask, if the Lions want a quarterback, why not take JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn? Well, it's because the Lions believe Stanton brings the entire package and think he'd be the perfect candidate to sit behind Jon Kitna for a year -- and perhaps two -- and learn from Kitna and Martz. If a quarterback isn't ready to step in and play after that kind of tutorship, it'll never happen.

The Lions have put themselves in a very good position to trade down and acquire more picks.I doubt they will be able to get Willis at the bottom of the 1st round. If he makes it past the Panthers I will be surprised.

Doing mock drafts also got much more difficult in light of this trade as there is probably greater than a 50% chance they trade out of that spot. But I find the fact that they're talking up Stanton like that a bit suspect. Seems like they're showing their cards again, which usually means they aren't.What if they CAN'T move out of that spot? And if Stanton is that good, there's great danger that he's not there at 2.2. He could easily go to a team like the Ravens. So now you've bypassed Quinn and Stanton and now you're really screwed.

The Lions aren't "screwed" if they don't get a QB in this year's draft.

However, I would worry about the Raiders taking Stanton at 2.01 if they select Calvin Johnson @ 1.01. If Millen wants Stanton he may be forced to trade up to get him.

My guess is that the Lions trade down with Minnesota. Minnesota selects Calvin Johnson and the Lions either go DE or Leon Hall and pick up an extra pick or two from Minny. You heard it here first.

I always have a hard time envisioning intra-divisional trades.

True, but I'm sure Minnesota would love to get their hands on Johnson.

Who's Johnson do they want to touch?

I agree. Stanton might go sooner than expected. He only needs one team to fall in love with him. I wonder if Stanton will be the Jason Campbell of this draft.
