It's apparently designed to do exactly that. This exhibit has triple paned glass, with a laminate layer in there too. The first pane on the gorilla side is made to crack so the animal doesn't break hand bones smashing it. The force is distributed across the second pane, so it isn't impacted hard enough to break. Third layer is the 'just in case', it would take something like the maximum force of the gorilla, raised to the third power, to even crack it. The laminate would keep it from breaking apart, though. I guess they replace that inner pane pretty often.
In college I worked in a testing lab that tested this kind of stuff. One of the tests we were given a hammer and timed on how long it would take to get thru the 3 layer laminate.....it took forever. We also had a 2x4 cannon to simulate hurricanes...we got to fire 2x4s into different materials, that was a fun job.
