I have no desire to hear those shows again. There won't be much in the way of replay value 6 months from now.

Really looking forward to Phish tour this summer. Trey seems re-energized.

definitely not for me. it was a nice thing to experience as they were played, but nothing really that will hold up all that well out of that context, imo. though trey's stella solo is something everybody who ever loved the gd needs to hear.

on the money. this was a nice experience, a one-time deal. i'd almost prefer they not tour more because that would seem to cheapen the specialness of the last week. personally, i don't think they're fit enough to tour nor do they have it nailed down. phil can't sing worth a damn. bob seemed kind of pissed off much of the time. bruce should sing WAY more of the catalog, trey has to get back to phish. the whole thing smelled like a big cash grab (which i didnt mind but wouldn't participate in in any sort of routine way via touring). all the nuances and shortcomings were harmless, even funny, but if you're going to tour, then you gotta iron that #### out.

i am happy this took place because im moved to dust off my dead collection and play it again (granted, it's digital). but in so doing, im unlikely to play much that was played on this tour. the music was good, the experience great, the nostalgia was sweet. i know it's been said, but it's not the same without jerry.

Was Sunday the best?

It was the last. And the cheapest (being the only standalone show).

I agree with others, AJ, et al, it probably wasn't up to the first two Chicago shows (I missed the first Santa Clara show, but thought Trey didn't assert himself as much in the Sunday show there which I did hear, and this seemed to be a consensus). Nobody can tell you what you like, so maybe you can listen to the audio linked by Shuke, and find which songs/sets/shows resonated most with your taste. I also agree, what value it has, imo, is more of a nostalgic than musical nature. Certainly VASTLY, MASSIVELY superior material in the archives (a subject broached below). I popped for the last show and recorded it for the historical value. Though it wasn't a sky cracking open, epiphany kind of momentous show, I'm glad I recorded it and can rewatch it. There may be some exceptions with classical, jazz and blues musicians/singers I could think of, but in general, rock musicians like the Stones, Who, Zeppelin, etc. are't going to sound as good in their late 60s and 70s as when they were half their age.

What era/s do you like (I liked the second set list Fri in Chicago best)? Others here could do a better job of matching the most approximate/promising fit accordingly.

As noted, a lot of this is free. Even the video, I posted links to three of my favorites above: Sunshine Daydream ('72), GD Movie ('74, though released in '77) and Closing of Winterland ('78). I haven't seen the latter in a while, but the first two are avail in blu ray and outstanding. Even if you have seen the GD movie before, the latest edition has an extra disc with 7-8 bonus songs that weren't included originally (Garcia edited a several hour movie from five shows out of reportedly 150+ hours of film - per the above, he took more than two years on the project, and a lot of personal attention to detail and care went into the production). The picture and sound, and on the Sunshine Daydream set, too, are both pristine, immaculate. Before it came out, the '72 Veneta, OR show (Sunshine Daydream) was supposedly one of, if not the most requested shows requested to be officially released, it was delayed for like four decades because the GD didn't own the film rights (and the film producer/director didn't own the music rights). The GD Movie was from Winterland '74 (before about a year and a half break from the road), and documented the end of the famed Wall of Sound era - their system nearly bankrupted them, but it it was probably the best in the world at the time.

Owsley, in addition to being a recreational chemist (I think Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan was referencing him) and designing the logo, had a keen interest in audiophile sound for arena/stadium settings. His impetus blossomed into Alembic R & D and many tangible sonic/acoustic payoffs. The Wall of Sound itself (hundreds of speakers driven by 50+ amps was so powerful it only needed to be turned to 2 - Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap would be apoplectic! ) which could send out a 32 foot standing wave for low frequencies, maybe not unlike the largest pipes on a church or concert organ, Phil's starship deck complex bass multi-controls, etc.

I got a few things like the Winterland ('73 and '77) and May '77 sets which I like a lot, those are without a doubt two of my favorite years.

the 1974-75 recordings on the Internet Archive are a real treat on a great stereo system.

Just started playing Sun. back, and the Estimated was one of the peaks for me. I recall Terrapin was erratic and fumbling, but perhaps I'll find some things to like even in that. The Drums > Space segments were cool, because I didn't pay much attention in the earlier shows.

The NFL will go. It will vanish and shrink. I don’t know what will go first, rock ‘n’ roll or The NFL. The Grateful Dead are more popular than The NFL now. The NFL was all right, but it's fans were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me
