Grayfolded edits together many different versions of Dark Star, but that isn't quite what you are talking about. I don't think we are quite there yet (they did use CGI in the Tron sequel to replicate Jeff Bridges younger visage from the original, to map onto the alter ego character of his naturaly aged variant).

Two outstanding back-to-back shows from the legendary May '77 run:

5/21/77 Lakeland Civic Center Arena, Lakeland FL (second half of ****'s Picks #29)

the big jam in the 5/22 sugaree is phenomenal.

and willie, there were a bunch of good Strangers played in 1980, but the most well-known of them is probably the one from 5/16 that is on the Go to Nassua release.

I have been spinning that D.P.#3 Pembroke Fl. in my cars for a long time. I think I started with it around 95 and I have had it in 5-7 different vehicles. I always loved the Wharf Rat and Terrapin, and I still skip over Sunrise. Good call on that one.

A few favorite shows of current GD archivist/curator Dave Lemieux.

Dave's Picks #13 Winterland 2/24/74 (3 CDs) There were Winterland shows early and later in 1974. The later shows were documented in the GD Movie, this was one of the early shows.

Some favorites of mine too. Both Oakland shows in 76 were awesome. Kind of a non year for the band but those shows stand out.

The sheer amount of songs that they play at those Fillmore shows in 70 are impressive. So much energy.

Got a rental with Sirius in it and am listening to the GD station as much as I can. Hear great stuff that I've never heard before. David Gans and crew are a bit too biased for my liking but that's a minor issue.

Heard studio version of Box of Rain yesterday for the first time in probably 15 years. It surprised me how good it is. Really holds up.

I have been all over the place with show dates this month. So much for going in order. I have been on a bit of a 77 kick this week. Spinning 6/7/77 right now and I'm loving it. It's the matrix version, not the Winterland set. It sounds really good and the Peggy-O is the highlight so far for me. Terrapin is in now and it feels slightly rushed, but vg regardless. It must have just come out around that time.

Billy and Mickey were by far the best part of FTW. The only redeeming quality of this coming band is the devils.

I can't believe this is his first show. He absolutely destroys. And vocally he blended very well. I need to spin it again but that Bird Song is amazing and might be the highlight. Mayer should just play Dead songs from now on instead of his usual stuff. I pray a tape from tonight surfaces quick. And I need a download of the first one.

Is anyone listening to this tonight? It's a crappy stream but these set lists are crazy (in a good way) and kinda all over the place. The Reddit finally seems accepting of JM.

Refuse to pay money for John Mayer. Billy and Mikey are weak.

Oteil is cool though
Big dislike. JM is WAY better then that Trey guy was in every way. The Drums and Space were great in N.Y. Oteil even jumped in. The Help on the Way and St. Stephen were my favorite parts. That whole second set was incredible, I'm really enjoying this run, and I need to find some quality down loads.

I'm onboard with this. Trey is no doubt a great guitarist, but I just don't think he was a good fit for the Fare Thee Well shows. It could of been an overall lack of practice, but those shows were kind of rough. His singing and his guitar tone is too distinctive for Dead songs IMO. He is Phish, and it sounded like Phish doing the Dead. I only went to Friday and enjoyed myself, but it wasn't stellar musically.

I'm really impressed with what I've heard of Mayer. I downloaded the Halloween show off of archive.org and love it. Mayer might be a #####, but he fits in great. Never thought he could loosen up his style enough to make it work, but he's doing it. That Estimated/Eyes from Halloween was one of the better ones I've heard in a long time. Dew was really good too. Going to Vegas to check this line-up out live.

For me, I think the struggle the band faced over the summer had less to do with Trey, whose guitar was very good after the first night debacle (entire band), and more to do with whatever was going on with Phil and Bob. Power struggle? Phil's bass might have been good (didn't really notice one way or the other), but his singing was horrendous. I gotta feeling - no evidence - that Phil power tripped at Trey's and Hornsby's expense. Band chemistry was all off and that had nothing to do with Trey, IMO.

Agreed all around.

I was planning on hitting the DCU show this past Tuesday with a buddy but had to take my kid to soccer practice and wouldn't have made it up there in time coming from RI. Pissed I missed it but been listening to the recent shows at work ad gotta say I like this lineup better than Fare Thee Well. Mayer has been excellent but I don't knock Trey for the work he did, I put that on Phil for being a #### and creating a bad vibe.

This band is good. Better than FTW. Have always found Mayer to be an exceptionally overrated guitar player, but he has clearly gone all-in studying this music and it shows. Apparently Billy dosed him during rehearsals, too, so he has been exposed to their canvas. There are some middling stretches and Bob's tempo issues come up periodically, but they're at least a little faster than in the past and they're starting to dig decent music out of the plodding. He's won me over. And Oteil is a perfect fit. Knows the Phil role, but doesn't mimic him. Never thought Id say it, but i'm beginning to entertain the idea of SF and LA.

I'm going on Tuesday in Atlanta. I haven't heard anything from Mayer that someone like Kadlecik or Kimock hasn't done far better in the past. All of them have essentially copied the Jerry style without adding enough of their own touches to put a unique spin on it. Trey merged his own distinctive style into the Dead which is why Fare Thee Well was so compelling. Mayer doesn't ever have his own sound, he simply apes other people like Garcia or Stevie Ray Vaughan. It sounds just fine but there's nothing original at all about what he's doing.
