Long weekend without kids (1 Viewer)

In about a month the wife has proposed we take a long weekend without the kids.  We would fly out of Philadelphia.  Could leave as early as 6PM on Friday, maybe a little before.  Can return Tuesday.  Budget is about $2500-$3000 all in.  Here's what we came up with so far as options, let me know what ideas I'm missing.

  • Las Vegas
  • Cancun (Hard Rock Resort or the new UNICO resort in Playa del Carmen)
  • Jamaica (Sandals or Luxury Bahia Principe)
I also threw out the idea of New Orleans or Key West - we've never been there before.  Not sure if they are good ideas or not.  Any others?

I'm surprising my wife with a trip without the kids this summer. I gave some thought to Vegas, but we need the R&R time more than anything.

I thought long and hard on this one and ultimately decided on Turks & Caicos.

Check out the Gansevoort hotel if you go.

Vegas

It's one of the 4 I'm looking at.

Whats the food situation down there? Island seems very very low key which is what she'd want.
Gansevoort is very isolated so we barely left the resort. We walked to Turtle Cove and ate at Tiki Hut which was really good and took a cab to Coco Bistro which I found a little overrated. I think that's about as high end as the area gets and it was typical resort wear/casual.

I just returned on Monday from a week in Riviera Maya.  We stayed 2 nights at Hard Rock and 5 nights at UNICO.  Hard Rock was decent, but the new UNICO 20.87 resort is really, really nice.  My only complaint is that the seaweed is really bad on the beach right now, but that seems to be the case up and down the entirety of Riviera Maya at the moment.

I went twice more than 10 years ago, so big caveat... But when I was there the food and service was the worst I've experienced in the Caribbean- no hyperbole. Been told it's gotten a lot better.

Key West is ####### awesome.  Food, booze, music, fishing, beach (kind of), homos.

It has everything.
Good times in Key West no doubt, but the other keys are nice and laid back IMO.  Islamorada/Marathon is my favorite area.

ETA:  Just got back from Vegas.  Always a good time, just a pretty long flight.

The airport was a nightmare and the surrounding areas were pretty rundown. After a couple of times venturing off grounds we decided to just stay at the resort.

So many places that are nicer than this, even for AI.

Cozumel, T&C, Antigua, St Maarten, St Bart's, Anguilla, Caymens, virgin islands,  etc, etc.

Great you guys are doing this.
I'M ONLY RESPONDING TO THE 3 OPTIONS HE LISTED, PROFESSOR MONEY BAGS!!!

Detailed report on UNICO?

Detailed report on UNICO?
Here's the TripAdvisor report I just submitted today, which is awaiting approval to be published:

For a property that's only been open a few months, I was very pleasantly surprised. AmStar transportation from airport to the resort was very smooth as was check-in. We were escorted to our room by our butler, who gave a great explanation of the property as well as our room, etc. We had a 5th floor room and is was excellent overall. My only very minor issues were there was no pen in the room (I assume this was an anomoly?) and the location of the smoke detector with the blinking light directly above the bed was a huge distraction trying to go to sleep the first night, but after that we got used to it. I'm assuming the property will fix this somehow down the line.

The food/drinks were top notch all around. I was pleasantly surprised how good the food in the 2087 Restaurant for breakfast/lunch was to be honest. We had dinners in the Italian restaurant as well as the Japanese restaurant. Service was a little slow at times, but nothing too drastic. The night club was fun and bands/DJs were excellent the 2 nights we went. The spa was fantastic. I highly recommend the Estancia Signature (4 hands) massage. Wow! The atmosphere at the pool during the day was great. We spent most of our outdoor time there. The beach is decent. Lots of seaweed all over the place, but the employees did their best to keep it at bay, constantly raking, bagging and getting rid of it. From what I can tell, this is an issue all over Riviera Maya, certainly not just at Unico 2087.

Only rating the service as a 4/5 from my trip, but I fully expect this to change to a 5 once they work out the kinks from only opening a few months ago. I certainly want to go back, hopefully sooner rather than later!

A few more things I left out - the hot tub on every single balcony is  :pickle: .  Lots of eye candy around too.  If you're into partying/nightlife, this is probably not the resort for you.  The club was good, but in no way does it compare to the Heaven nightclub at Hard Rock.

Short flight for you to Bermuda. I haven't been there in a while. As I recall, not a lot of run down or poverty areas so we felt safe everywhere.

Definitely a great advantage when you get there so quickly from the east coast. Nice island to tour around too.

While I love Vegas and thats still my recommendation it's more to do with it being a short weekend trip.  If it was a week long trip I'd probably opt for one of the beach destinations

That's a good point. It usually takes me a couple days to get really relaxed and comfortable at a beach location.

Huge fan of Mandalay Bay you get the huge pool and get a lot of scenery if you know what I mean

For jus a long weekend, I'd avoid hassle of flying and drive to Annapolis/ MD Eastern Shore towns..   get a place on the water, eat crab, hit some wineries..

What's your primary goal?  Resting, relaxing, food, partying, gambling, entertainment etc?
