Some years they played less than 154 others they played more.

I guess that years ago they would just not make-up rain-outs because they already had double-headers scheduled and the travelling took so much longer.. but there are also a bunch of years where he played 157 games which might have been extra games to decide the pennant but I'm not sure. Did they play 3 games to decide the pennant back them (I think they only play one today)

Obviously he's an easy one to look at since he played every-game, so that should be the total amount of games the yanks played those years

If you check the AL page for those years, the number of games Gehrig played is often greater than the number of games listed for the Yankees. E.g. the 1938 Yanks went 99-53 (152 games), yet Gehrig's year line on his player page shows 157 games played.

99-53-and 5 ties

This is interesting. My guess is that it has something to do with ties. The season was 154 games long. If there was a tie ended by weather or darkness they replayed the entire game. In 1938 they had 5 ties. Possible they replayed 3 of those games but didn't have a chance or a need to replay the other 2 games. So they ended up playing 157 games, 3 over the 154 schedule. Not sure how these tie games effect statistics.

interesting question about the statsin 27 which is the year Ruth hit 60 there were apparantly 155 games that Gehrig appeared in, so Ruth would have had the same amount of games available.still not 162 when Marris broke his record but I guess the difference between 162-155 is less than 162-154
