Loreto - anyone been there? (1 Viewer)

Need to recharge the batteries.  Heading to Loreto on Saturday.  Been to Cabo a bunch of times but never Loreto.  Supposedly great fishing and whales migrating on the Pacific and Sea of Cortez sides as watching season begins.  Just need to get off the grid, chill on the water, eat some good food, sip some good tequila.  Staying next to the golf course in Loreto Bay so will play a few rounds.  If any of you FBGs have recommendations please send 'em!

Too early for whale watching.  Fishing will be limited.  Maybe some roosterfish from shore, or if you rent a kayak you can catch snapper (good eating) and tons of triggerfish (toxic).  Use small spoons.

Youre in Napolo, which is about 9 miles from town.  I'd rent a car.  Stock up on food at one of the grocery stores in loreto.  I prefer Ley's.  There's a little sundry store in Napolo, but that's about it.  Cheap beer there.

The golf course is pretty good.  (My brother's house is by the 11th green, so I'm pretty familiar with it).  Front nine is nothing special but the back 9 is pretty spectacular.  Decent fishing near the estuary by the bridge, and also near the rocks and around the corner from the beach.

Massage at the hotel is pretty good and reasonably priced.  Breakfast buffet is pretty lame and the coffee is awful.  Bar by the pool serves a decent lunch and stiff drinks.

In founder's village there's a wine bar with good sangria.  They will give it to you to go if you ask.  The coffee shop is ok.

Best restaurants in Loreto are Mita Gourmet and 1697.  Get chocolate clams as an appetizer no matter what.

For casual go to asadero super burro.  Great burritos.

theres a place closer to the airport out in the brush off the side of the road called Sabor.  Good barbecue.

"sports bar" means strip club.  There are 3.  Rodeo is the best.  Strippers start around 10:30-11.  Beers there are about $2, a lap dance will run you $5 (same as a shot of tequila).  Strippers will offer to have sex for an hour at varying rates.  Everything is negotiable and I don't really know why you'd want an hour.

There are pool tables in the other room.

Glass bottom boat tour is pretty good.

let me know if you have specific questions.  Loreto isn't Cabo.  It's slow and full of expats.  Because of that, stuff closes and reopens whenever the owners leave.  Some things I listed may be closed or dead.

We went to an indoor/outdoor taco and seafood bar about three times. Can't remember the name but the chocolate clams and campechana were amazing. I think it was just down a few doors from the good supermarket.

Could you see the water?

Mediteranneo is pretty good with a good view.

Hmm.  That could be a couple places. I think I know what you're talking about but don't know the name.
My buddy who is a vet mentioned it. He has gone down to volunteer in the local vet clinic a few times.

Pretty sweet way to do charity: neuter and vaccinate some animals and then retire to the patio for margaritas and amazing food.

Excellent.  Thanks for the tips amigo.  I've already booked Sabor upstairs for dinner Sunday night.  Definitely going to Asadero.  Heard Mi Loreto is good.  Will knock out the top 4-5, El Rey del Taco (not sure if that's the taco place you mentioned), Orlando's, 1697 and maybe Restaurant Mediterraneo.  We're staying Founder's Village so we'll hit up the wine bar. Mom has a car so we're good there.

Bummed to hear that it's possibly too early for whales.  Wonder if there is some sort of tracker that will say where they are?

No strip joints on this trip.  Though the trip to Amnesia in Cabo with 13 of my FF buddies is a night we'll never, ever forget...

There's a gringo that runs a place called Eco-Tours.  Call him and ask if the whales are in.  Grays and Blues are different places.  Blues are boring.  It's like watching an island rise out of the water and sink again.  The Grays are more active and you can get closer.

Mita Gourmet is my favorite.  It's next to 1697, so you can take a look before you decide.  Similar menus, but a couple of the best meals I've had were at MG.  Mi Loreto is new(ish).  I was in Loreto last in July and it wasn't open, so I don't know.  My brother was just there and he didn't mention it when I asked about anything new and noteworthy.

My brother is a big hiker, so if you are into that I can ask him the best places to go.  I'm more of a golf/lay by the pool/restaurant at night type.

Oh, and don't be thrown off by Sabor.  You drive down a dirt road through the brush and end up at a house.  You'll see a couple smokers in the yard by the pool.  The family lives in the house and the restaurant is upstairs.  They're really nice and the food is good.  Just a really strange atmosphere.

This place is awesome. Seriously. I might buy a place here. It is so cheap I almost feel guilty.  Now I know why people retire here. Great food. Mita Gourmet, Super Burro, Sabor and El Rey so far.  Loreto Bay golf course is on better land than Danzante and with some TLC could be phenomenal.  Still a very good layout. Hot dog and beer on the turn for 120 pesos. 60 cents. Have driven to the Bay of Concepcion and all over.  Just gorgeous scenery. Going snorkeling tomorrow. Maybe golf and massage before flying home.

2 bedroom condo on airbnb for $130 a night.

We got a townhome/villa that was either $100 or $120 a night on VRBO. The fact it was in August probably helped.

Glad you're digging it.   There are some more obscure places further out, some hikes and stuff, but I'd wait until the next time.  Hit the main things, get the lay of the land, and enjoy the vibe.  Have you been to the Wine Cellar?  The sangria is great.

Wanted to. It was packed tonight as they had a concert. Free tix and reservations gone 3 days ago. Plus I don't mix tequila and wine very well.  Don Julio won out. Next time.

Did a snorkeling tour on Danzante island today. Left from the resort. Sea of Cortez was like glass today. I can't even put it into words. No whales but plenty of dolphin a few feet from the boat. Great pictures. Snorkeling was unreal. Hung out at Villa Palmar the rest of the day. Cilantro fish and garlic shrimp at Orlando's tonight. Packed a lot in 6 days.
