jomar's post pointed out that the FBI used techniques almost identical to another, better known investigation currently going on. Yet, in that one, the Bureau's integrity and use of said techniques is endlessly criticized yet no one has done so in this admissions scandal.

What if schools offered a buy-in for wealthy but unqualified students (i.e., somewhere from 2-10 times the normal tuition rate) but their permanent record designated them as a "financial" or "legacy" or (make up your own word) admission? Would Mr. and Mrs. Rich Southerncalifornian be ok with that? I'm thinking that a system like that would help a lot of other students who come up short in affordability.

This irritates me much more than the original scandal:

The first lawsuits targeting elite universities and individuals charged by federal prosecutors in a sweeping college admissions scandal were filed by a student and parent on Wednesday in California.

The parent, Jennifer Kay Toy, claimed in San Francisco Superior Court that her son Joshua — with a 4.2 grade-point average — was not admitted to some schools because of the "despicable actions" of parents implicated in the scandal.

Me neither. I’m confused by the cryptic posts. Just tell us what investigation you’re referring to!! I don’t watch news or follow politics at all, so I assume it’s something related to politics that I have no clue about. I get my news from here

He's talking about the Mueller investigation and Trump. People over in the PSF are calling the method with which they might get the President a "process crime." It's really both sides polluting the PSF, which is all that place is. 

I'm just clearing it up because this is an interesting thread. Those threads in the PSF aren't, and are just a lot of anger on both sides of the political equation. I stay out of those other than to point out the hysteria brought forth by both sides.

Thanks. Just to put into perspective how detached I am from news and politics, I have no idea what the Mueller investigation is or about. I’m much happier not knowing tbh.

Nah. There are 8 billion other people who can worry. I went down the rabbit hole 10 years ago and have come full circle. Some stuff is just out of our control and until the masses wake the F up, nothing is changing soon.

So not paying attention to news is dangerous how? I’d say it’s the opposite. I’m constantly happy and positive and pass it along to anyone I come in contact with. 10 years ago I was preaching doom and gloom and was a miserable SOB

I'm 99% sure they would not be ok with that.

They want the illusion (which over time morphs into reality) that their kid got into and graduated from a top school on their own merits.

Don’t have a problem with your worldview, but how can you say “I don’t pay attention to that stuff” and then call out the people who need to wake up? Anyway, I don’t blame you for avoiding that stuff, it’s disheartening. 

One glaring issue here that is being completely overlooked is how rich people create/abuse charities as tax shelters or to otherwise launder money. How many politicians, or their spouses, have a charity?

Kwame Kirkpatrick not only bilked the people of Detroit with pay to play politics but also collected millions for his charity that went to administrative costs and employed relatives. This guy in the college case had a charity that people donated to. Politicians set up charities and anonymous donors can funnel money directly to them, and this still happens today. 

You could theoretically take dirty money, show it as collected donations in your charity, and pay it back out as salary, or for services to a shell company that the original  donor set up. And while some charities do amazing work, a lot don’t.

Top 50 worst charities (2013)

1.3 billion collected, 900+ million paid to those who collected, not for whom it was intended. Legally, apparently, as this is pretty common and there are no repercussions.
