Louis C.K.'s Next Comedy Special Will Be $5 On His Website (1 Viewer)

No Kidding. First the cable providers, now ticketmaster? I want to have a gayby with him.
He had some trouble because places wouldn't do this because of their deals with Ticketmaster
Although what he's doing is cool, my comment was directed more about his personality. He seems like an everyman, thoroughly approachable. If I saw him on the street to say hello and he big-timed me, I would be stunned. More so than with probably any other entertainer.

Louis' next HBO Special, Oh My God, premiers Saturday, April 13th at 10pm EST. On HBO.

:lmao: Well, that didn't last long. Whatever happened to Stephen King when he was selling chapters to his new book online? I can't remember that far back.

Per Wiki:C.K.'s fifth hour special Oh My God will debut on HBO April 13. C.K. claims he will release the special on his website for $5, in the same fashion as Live at the Beacon, a few months after the special airs on HBO.

Maybe it takes a little more to self produce a special than he originally thought. It might just be easier to let HBO handle everything and him just show up and tell jokes.

Yeah, or maybe HBO just backed up the money truck. And hey, if you want to be a skeptical ##### about it you can wait a few months and still get the show for $5.Edit - second sentence not intended to be direct to you.

I don't think a lot of creative types enjoy certain aspects of production/promotion. Can't say for sure, but number crunching, etc. may cause more headaches than he wants to put up with when he can go to HBO and focus on telling jokes and also expand his brand by reaching a wider audience.

Yup. And HBO will get a cut of the internet sales, but when is all said and done, he will probably come out better than he did with his last special. Hes probably getting as much from HBO as he made from the last one, plus his cut the internet sales. More money, less work. Hopefully that will mean top notch material since he can focus on that instead all the production crap.

from his AMA

First off, you're great! Your act always brightens my day, so just want to say thanks and wish you the best on this AMA.

Questions - How hard was it to negotiate HBO into the 5 dollar download for shameless?

Are you going to try to do a similar thing with "Oh My God"?

HBO was very cool about the shameless audio on my site and equally cool about the special. The special (Louis CK oh my god on HBO april 13th at 10pm) will be fully available on my site in september, same as everything else I sell there. I think it was rather forward thinking of hbo to allow it. Plus if they didn't I would not have given them this special.

The president of FX did an hourlong podcast a couple weeks ago on Grantland. He touched on Louie for a few minutes and said that when they made the first deal, Louie had no idea how to actually make a sitcom and didn't want any input, so they just gave him a camera and said do whatever you think is funny or interesting. They offered him a "lot of" money and some production help or a "little" money and virtually no help/notes. Louie chose the little money. The network never saw anything until like the whole thing was done.

He also mentioned how much freedom they want to give their talent but also how difficult to do showrunning, and that's why they only did like 7 episodes for Always sunny's first season, just to get their feet wet. Mike Schur of Parks and Rec said every show should do 10 episodes first and then just throw them away, just to understand how to run the show.

Very  special to me....

CK is overrated in terms of crafting an hour, but has some transcendent bits. I really respect his push to continue crafting content but maybe less is more. I laughed for about 5-8 minutes of the 45 I watched last night.

The "Of Course.....but Maybe" stuff was good. Especially the peanut allergy one.

Enjoyed the food chain bit as well.

He seemed way off his game to me, not nearly as sharp as he's been in the past. I turned it off after about 15-20 minutes - will give it another chance someday.

I agree with the "meh" crowd. It had some moments, but definitely not "HBO Special" worthy. He needs to stop with the "one year, then the bit is gone forever" thing.

There's a reason most comedians keeps bits longer than 1 year - it's hard to constantly come up with new stuff. I would have enjoyed an updated version of the "everything is amazing, and nobody is happy" bit.

I liked it, and I dont mind that he does a whole new hour every year. I saw him a couple years ago and was hoping he would do something like Brian Regan does at live shows - at the end of the show he does bit/joke requests, where people in the audience shout out their favorites ones and he goes through a bunch of them. Someone always yells out "The yellow one's the SUN!".

It'd be cool if Louis did that when on tour.

Gabriel Iglesias does it too.

He's completely my sense of humor, I love his show Louie and I howled throughout the hour last night. I thought it was the most consistently funny special he's done. I was completely baked but I don't think that had too much to do with it.

didnt he basically do that with his thing about us living on the best planet and the whole food chain bit?

Just watching now. First 15 minutes were brutal. Sounds like a constant, 1970's sit come laugh track was on. Annoying. If this wasn't a laugh track people were laughing at every single sentence, even the tee up. I've seen him funnier. This is bad. Really bad. Living on reputation. Stick to sitcoms - lost any meaningful edge he had.

Lots of standups better. Stanhope destroys this guy.

Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, most great comedians have a very funny 1st stand up hour that is usually the best stuff they have had over a 5-10 year career before they make it big. Most of the great comedians do not pound out a new hour every year. George Carlin who I love dearly regurgitates a lot of material over time. He was one of the few that did a new HBO special about every 2-3 years.

I like Louis a lot, my wife and I love his TV show and we like his stand up although I think I like it a bit more than she does. He was pretty hard edged when I first listened to him and he is evolving. Dane Cook was seriously funny when I was in Los Angeles back in 2000 and would go see him routinely at the Laugh Factory, always sat down close, he is very funny in a small setting, was not into him once he went big a few years later.

When artists are hungry they come up with their best material.

Watched it with a handful of people with a few drinks in us. We were all pretty much howling. Would say their is about 10 minutes out of the hour of subpar material. It's not one of his best hours but was still really good.

Thought it was a huge mistake to do the circular stage and camera setup. Was very distracting at first. Plus it must be a distraction for the comedian to have to worry about the people who he has his backed turned too. Don't see any need for this especially for a tv event.

Wow, very surprised people didn't like it. Now I'm wondering if I laughed so hard because I was high.
I was supremely disappointed overall, though I did laugh at his observation about having to wipe your ass for no particular reason when you reach a certain age.

I actually saw this material when he performed at The Fox in Atlanta around November/December. It was really, really good. Starts a little slow, but after that it's just as good as his previous stuff.

I think people are being hyper-critical here.

New $5 special from his site is out now.

'Live at the Comedy Store'!give him your money, jerks

LIVE AT THE COMEDY STORE
I developed and prepared this material over the last year or so, mostly in comedy clubs. This special kind of goes back to when I used to just make noises and be funny for no particular reason. It felt right to shoot this special in a club to give it that live immediate intimate feeling. The show is about an hour long. The opening act, who is seen at the beginning (good place for an opening act) is Jay London. One of my favorite club comics going way back to the late 80s when I first started in working in New York.

I hope you like it.

Please PLEASE don’t torrent this special. If you want to share it, direct people here. It’s so easy to drop the 5 dollars. We don’t make you join anything. We let you use the file any way you want. It costs a ####load of money to make these specials and I do it myself. I love offering it to you directly for so cheap and so easily. I would like that to continue to be a good idea.

Okay. Enjoy the show.

Also, this is the first show I'm offering in 1080p HD. The video is H.264 and the audio is MP3 or FLAC. Both are available for stream or download.
The cost is $5.00.
To buy this thing, do this: Enter your email (We will NOT bother you) then choose below to pay with Amazon, PayPal or Dwolla. Then you can watch the show, download the show, ignore the show. Whatever you want. After that, you never, ever have to hear from me again. Unless you want to.

Saw him at the Forum a few weeks back. The night of the Golden Globes. Was great but not one of his top 3 hours. Will buy regardless.

The rat bit is hilarious.

love that he does this. Dont really buy his pseudo "woe is me, this costs a lot" plea as he is getting filthy rich off this. But still in
