Lucky breaks your team has gotten .... (1 Viewer)

As irrational fans, we tend to get defensive when someone says "you were lucky to win that game" or "you were lucky to have that guy on your team", even if it's true.

So why not start a thread where we admit we got lucky first, so we don't have to react defensively to the accusations?

I'll go first ...

The Broncos have been lucky because ...

a) John Elway didn't want to play for the Colts

b) Al Davis fired Mike Shanahan and didn't finish paying him his contract

c) Terrell Davis was better than anyone, including the Broncos, thought

d) We get to see Champ Bailey play in his prime

e) Rod Smith has the work ethic of the all-time greats without the talent

f) Mark Brunell fumbled in scoring range in the 1997 Wild Card playoff game

g) The Chiefs started Elvis Grbac instead of Rich Gannon in the 1997 Divisional playoff game

h) Kordell Stewart remembered he was Kordell Stewart in the 1997 AFC Championship game

i) The Jets repeatedly self-destructed in the 1998 AFC Championship game keeping Denver in the game

Anyone else?

Colts' lucky breaks that I immediately recall

1995 - Lin Elliot missing 3 FGs in the divisional round which allowed the Colts to upset the Chiefs

1999 - I think the Colts just were lucky most of the year to finish 13-3 that year. They were probably really a 10-6 team

2003 game against TB. Leaping. What a horrible call/rule that bailed out Vandershank.

2005 - The Pitt/Indy game was a debacle by the refs, and that's why the Colts had a chance to tie the game late

2006 regular season - The opposing kickers missed a lot of FGs when the Colts started 9-0

2006 - WC Round - Trent Green getting stepped on by a guard, then Tynes missing a gimme FG changed the game completely

Divisional Round - The Colts recovered all their fumbles in that game - and the holding call on Odgen was terrible. And the Vinatieri kick kick from 51 yards was a lucky bounce.

Cowboys - Romo dropping the ball

oh wait....that's not right

:goodposting:  :fishy:  :wall:

does the vikes trading the world for walker count?

if not I'll stick with O'donnel's gift INTs

Four letter word that rhymes with the french word for seal. TUCK

:goodposting: Jets don't get lucky too often - Or enough luck to have a huge impact. We got "Lucky" when Testeverde wasn't in the end zone - But, really Seattle fans should have been happy with that since they got rid of Errickson - The Jets were playoff bound anyway.

The Bucs got lucky that the Eagles were stupid enough to draft Mike "Toolsy" Mamula instead of Warren Sapp.

edit: also got lucky to get Derrick Brooks at the end of the first round of that same draft.

Exactly.Kyle Brady over Warren SappBrian Thomas over Ed Reed. They got royally screwed when Peyton Manning stayed in school just for the lack of value left in that draft.Hopefully ManGenius has changed all this.

I can think of 18 lucky breaks for the Vikings.

Randy Moss slipped to 19 in the draft and we had several years to cash in on his presence on the field and that lucky break and didn't.

I expect a list from pats fans in about the 40-50 range

Bears

Not much

Uralcher drafted instead of Plax (thanks Pit)

Lovie over Saban

All 2001 luck wiped out becasue of piss poor Philly game.

And that Parcells backed out on the Bucs. And Al Davis' ego got in the way of him keeping Gruden, thus paving way for trade to Bucs. And then Bucs get to face Raiders who's playbook they were able to study before SB.Love how 2 teams benefitted from Al dumping his coach. :sadbanana:

Raiders caught some breaks with Holy Roller, roughing passer call against NE in '76 and few others but not nearly enough to make up for getting screwed by Immacualte Reception, Tuck Scam and Rob Lytle's 'non-fumble' in '77 AFC Championship.

Don Majkowski going down September 20, 1992.
Add Reggie White listening to God and choosing Green Bay over a number of suitors. Also the Tuna for turning down the Green Bay coaching job which eventually led to the hiring of Holmgren. I sincerely doubt Favre would've developed the same way under Parcells.Oh and going back a long ways to the Ice Bowl. The Packers were fortunate not to be penalized on the famous sneak. Starr was "aided" into the endzone.

and we took MARIO WILLIAMS.

I feel lucky that the Lions beat the Cowboys giving the Raiders the first pick in this year's draft.

Bo Jackson going to the Raiders after the Bucs played slime ball with Bo the year before.

For the Giants:

first round pick rb rogers i believe by NO? leaving Lawrence Taylor for the Gints.

buffalo wide right (or was it left) in the Super Bowl.

Simms to Rob Johnson on fourth and 17 against Minn. in about game 11 on the way to the Super Bowl. Lose that game and the Giants were essentially out of it.

Can not remember all the dates.

 I already hit the one Patriots lucky break, see post #4....

Unless you count the bad luck that this franchise has gone thru...

Edit to add: I guess that Mo Lewis being extra aggressive on a Drew Bledsoe hit could be good luck...

and Tony Eason's Hail Mary to beat the Rams in 86...

Skins - having an owner smart enough to pay salaries to good players other teams left go (Riggins, Theisman, Lachey...).

Hiring of Gibbs.

Taking Art Monk and confunding the heck out my friends & I who said "Art who? From where?"

Darrell Green. Good speed, but too short to start in the NFL.

Bad Denver defense & lots of 3 & outs during the 2nd quarter.

Andre Reed taking off his helmet.

On the other hand, having a prejudiced owner who set the franchise behind for an entire decade as he wouldn't sign certain players.

Having an owner rich enough to pay salaries to players who were good 5 years ago (Deion, Bruce Smith...) or were never worth it (Lloyd).

I'll take a shot at the Pats

1. drafting Tom Brady when nobody (including the Pats) thought he could start in the NFL

2. drafting Richard Seymour instead of David Terrell like most of NE wanted them too

3. TUCK rule

4. Mike Martz and not someone else was coaching the Rams in the SB

5. Denver losing to Jax to allow for a home AFC championship game in 1996

6. Troy Brown - 12th round draft choice

7. David Patten's head being out of bounds while his body was touching the football negating a fumble and allowing the Pats to win the game in OT.

8. Pittsburgh giving up on Mike Vrabel early in his career.

9. Parcells stumbling across a kicker by the name of Adam Vinatieri.

BTW. I was trying to think of any from Sunday against the Chargers to add and I couldnt think of any. Most point to the McCree fumble but its not like he just dropped the ball. Troy Brown stripped it out of his hands and Caldwell was alert to pounce on it.

The Steelers... (attempting to do these in order)

1. Winning the coin toss over Chicago for the rights to the #1 overall pick...to draft Terry Bradshaw

2. 1974 draft class. What an amazing combo of luck/great management to get 4 HOF'ers

3. Cowboys' Jackie Smith drops wide-open TD in Super Bowl XIII

4. Not taking a QB in the 1983 draft class. Thank God for that...

5. Choosing Cowher over Wanndstedt (sp?)

6. The Colts' Jim Harbaugh's Hail Mary pass falls incomplete in 1995 AFC Championship

7. Ben Roethlisberger's tackle of Nick Harper vs Colts in 2005

8. Having a couple calls actually go our way for once in Super Bowl XL (even though most were the right calls anyway)

9. Ben Roethlisberger surviving his motorcycle accident. Can you imagine if he didn't?

10. And finally.... Not being the Cleveland Browns :goodposting:

I'd have to think that Vanderjagt's WAYYYY wide right kick has to make this list.#5 is a good one. I still get nervous watching highlights of that 10 years later.

11. The steelers only have one for the thumb because of the officals that night.

Haha how did I know some jokester would start complaining about the officiating? The refs were fine with the exception of the low block on Hasselbeck. Blame Seattle for screwing themselves over, don't blame the officials for catching them doing it. The only thing that was lucky for us was that the rights calls were even made, all too often have Steelers fans seen the refs miss calls to have us lose games or almost lose them (see Pitt/Indy divisional playoffs)

Super Bowl 23 - Lewis Billups drops an easy INT in the endzone. Montana finds Rice for a TD on the next play and the 49ers go on to win their 3rd Super Bowl of the 80s.

Titans

Homerun Throwback ruled a lateral

Texans passing on hometown favorite Vince Young

PacMan Jones hasnt been caught doing anything that will put him in prison. Yet.

Yeah, I still can't believe the Titans pulled off that lateral against the Bills. It really was a miracle! I really thought they had to be destined to win the Super Bowl that year, and they almost did.

I didnt have a horse in the race but even I can tell you that the Steelers were the beneficiary of some VERY, VERY poor officiating. Numerous bad calls went their way that night. Dont pretend they didnt. This coming from a Pats fan that knows the Pats were the beneficiary of one of the worst calls in the history of football (although Charles Woodson did hit Brady in the head ;) )

What numerous bad calls? I understand this was an issue after the game, but it's been a year now and no one's talking about it anymore, especially after Mike Perreira explained them. The push-off on D-Jax, for example, should be clear as day now especially after that bears/Seahawks game I think it was, when there was no flag thrown for illegal contact because the QB left the pocket. In the Super Bowl, D-Jax obviously pushed off on Chris Hope sending him back, and Hope wasn't flagged because Hasselbeck left the pocket. There wasn't enough evidence to overturn Ben's TD. And the holding call on Locklear was an opnionated call, but it's not like there aren't questionable holding calls in every NFL game. Besides, Seattle still had 1st down after that, and they proceeded to collapse. I've admitted the "low block" thing on hasselbeck was poor, but that's it.

But again, a Patriots fan shouldn't talk about bad calls. They received the biggest joke of a call in NFL history with the Tuck Rule. That was an absolute embarassment. And unlike SBXL, there's not even good explainations as to why the Tuck Rule was called that way...it was just blatant favoritism.
