Luggage (1 Viewer)

I only do overnighters or at most, 2-nighters, so I have this guy that I carry on along with my Patagonia backpack that carries my work folder, laptop, iPad and headphones.

The bag has a bottom compartment that JUST fits my work boots. The top portion is more than big enough for a pair of pants, undergarments, shirts, sleep clothing and toiletry bag.

I've given thought to investing in carry-on "luggage" with the fancy rollers and hard shell...... but my current travel needs don't push me there quite yet.

That said... :blackdot: just in case.
I still have that bag but have changed to a Swiss Gear carryon. I used to have a similar one but the wheels got too beat up and I got a rip in the pocket. It was easily a decade or more old so it was time to go.

Speaking of which, my wife has a nice Samsonite set that she's had for at least 20 years now and it's held up stunningly well. She's had to travel all over the country and that luggage looks brand new.
I believe, with no data to back it up, that Samsonite has turned to poop. The last few I bought before giving up on them just fell apart immediately, and their warranty really sucks - doesn't cover wheels or zippers.
That's disappointing to hear.

I hate the clamshell design that dominates the hard shell luggage. It's not efficient, the internal divider always breaks, and it takes up a lot of room to open.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a checked or carry on hard shell that opens like a soft shell (i.e from the top).

I travel about 10x a year and usually 2x internationally. I'm a big guy, so weight is a concern as my clothes/shoes weighs more :)

Oh, I'm also thrifty but want reliable crap as well. Wife says I'm too picky

Hanke luggage on Amazon does what I think you are describing. No clue on reliability, nor do I own one. Just found it. Also Lojel Cubo.

I will say what was a game changer for me on short trips is a suit box. I got one of these and I can do overnights with my 30L Peak Design travel backpack. I wear outfit #1, pack my suit for the next day in the suit box, and pack shoes and a change of casual clothes around it. Most of my travel is overnight into the city for investor conferences, etc. so this works well as it keeps my hands free and I can get around as needed. If I fly, I usually do the same thing and add a carry-on roller. The 30L backpack is quite large - I can't overpack it and have it fit under a seat, but I haven't been told it's too large to consider my personal item yet.
