Mad Cow! Holiday Computer building (2 Viewers)

So the big stuff is I think taken care of. Not sure on some of the other cables. I got an SSD, and HD, and then the DVD burner. They all need to have SATA cables, right? Not sure which ones to click into on the mobo though. And then I think I got all those little wires in the right place. Those tiny ones with only 1-2 prongs that go on the mobo. Why does the mobo have fan plugs?
Read the manual and determine which SATA plugs on the mobo are 6gbps. There should be at least two. Be sure to plug the SSD and HDD into those, and the optical drive into some other. So I take it you figured out how to mount the HSF without conflicting with the RAM or vidcard? Did you remember the thermal paste?

K, thanks on the SATA.Ya remembered the paste it came with it but wasn't sure how much to use so put a lot on there. Kinda weird.Had to tilt the HSF toward the vid card. Both are installed but HSF leans on the card but not too bad. We'll see.Still haven't powered everything on as I'm trying to make sure everything is hooked up right and watching the MMA fights, too.Not gonna lie this whole thing has been scary for me. My build before included a case with PSU and mobo/chip already set up. It is a big jump to not have that already done.

You use about the amount of a pea in the middle of the CPU and then spread it out evenly. Is the HSF sitting flush on the CPU? You want to make sure it's making even contact with the whole CPU and when you say it's "leaning" that strikes me as odd. Is it just "touching" the vidcard? The trick with assembling a PC is that very little needs to be "forced". RAM can sometimes require a bit of pressure, but as long as you make sure the notches in the RAM/CPU/etc line up with the notches in their respective ports, you're fine.I'm not sure if you have connected the case leads to the mobo yet, but you usually need the manual for that. Be mindful of the positive and negative leads/posts. You can't hurt anything but you might not get it to post or an LED activity light to work if you connect them backwards.

I completely covered the CPU and then completely covered the HSF. It's pretty thick and it slides around a little even though I've tightened it pretty good.

Ya, the HSF is fine. It just grazes the card enough that the card leans away a little. But card is seated just fine.

Ya, I learned this the first time around. Done a good job of that but had to remove the whole thing after forgetting to put the back plate in. I'm not worried as I was careful but I think I've handled the mobo and components way too much.

I haven't been please with the instructions so far. I'm sure you guys who have done this before could do it without instructions but for me it's been very confusing and a lot of stuff done tentatively. I've watched a few videos online which has helped and I think I'll be able to finish this and feel good about it tomorrow sometime.

MC --

I need your assitance in regard to an OC issue I'm having --

I'm trying to overclock my Intel i5 750 - I have an AS Rock P55 extreme Mobo. For some reason the multiplier will NOT change above 9 no matter what I do??? I had never messed around with it before and am just noticing it. Any idea? I'm totally at a loss and its driving me nuts as my processor is completely throttling the rest of my computer. Basically, its running at 1.5 core speed (when I SHOULD be at 3.8-4) because of the multiplier lock. If I can't change this, I'm buying a new processor b/c it explains why my CPU performance really hasn't been great...

Cables all nice and tidy and machine looks good I think. Only real issue I can see is the power and SATA cables don't sit as nice in the SSD drive as they do in the HD and Optical. They snap into the other ones but just kinda hang in the SSD. Hope that's not to big an issue.

Anyway, OS and major games go on SSD. What kind of stuff goes on regular HD?

Arctic Silver is on sale for $8/tube on Newegg today.

Pulled the trigger on the Best Buy Acer 27" LED last night for $270 (plus $27 tax) and the overclocked 560Ti for $210 AR. Considered the 6950 2GB but it wasn't a reference card so wouldn't take the BIOS flash to "upgrade" it to a 6970.

Will still keep my eyes open for monintor deals since I have until the 24th for in store pick up.

Anything that consumes a ton of space or you don't care about speed when acessing. So that means media (Yup -- porn), and lesser-used apps/games.

I think Intel has some kind of power saver that you have to disable in the BIOS. I cannot remember what it is called off the top of my head, but yes, you should get to 20X, I believe.

Not including the monitor and OS, I (really, we - thanks for all the help) ended up about $730 AR and beat out the Toms Hardware "Enthusiast" $1030 machine in almost every way. If I'd bought 2 of the 560s to compare with their 2 540s, I'd have killed it for over $100 less. I still might add that second one if prices come down with the release of nextgen cards.

More RAM - 8 vs 4

Bigger SSD 60 vs 30

Better Case: Coolermast HAF vs Raidmax

Better CPU Cooler - Zalman CNPS9700 vs Coolermaster Hypermaster TX3

Comparable CPU/mobo, PS and DVD

Did worse on the HD because of market conditions - Hitachi 500gb to Western Digital 750gb (both are 7200 RPM)

Nice work. Start shopping for a bigger SSD now -- you're going to want one. I have a 128GB RealSSD and I'm already eyeing a 256GB M4...

Yeah - in the next year, I'm sure I'll upgrade the SSD and add a second card for crossfire. We'll see about the HDD. I have a couple of terrabytes in portable and network storage so I have plenty of storage space.

Still not up and running. It's ok cuz I just haven't been home between coaching, driver's ed, etc. But very frustrated with Microsoft:

Called to see if I can install Win7 on new machine. No dice because it was an upgrade and not the original version. No problem. But the guy wants to sell me the Win7 online. I'm like no because I can have it in hand from Best Buy in five minutes. He must be on commission because he keeps pushing and so I give. He gets me to tech and I start the download. It takes 40 minutes and doesn't work. I try it a few more times. No go. Also, they are charging extra to send me a backup disk. I go off on them about that and how this doesn't work and they suck because in the time it took to go through all this I could've been up and running by grabbing a copy at Best Buy. And they won't take the charge off because they say it hasn't happened yet but I've got my bank account open and the charge is pending. And I've also got an email from Microsoft saying the charge went through.

I'm sure this will all get sorted out but what a freaking waste of time. Not to mention I've talked to four people at Microft now and they've all been of south-Asian persuasion. F me I can't understand these people.

Here's a trick for Win7 upgrade on a wiped HDD/SSD (okay obvious to many):

Run it as a new version to completion. Run it again as an upgrade. Will register just fine.

Reviews seem shaky on the manufacturer. That was a big part of the reason I went with the evga.

What's the lowdown on cross firing cards from different manufacturers our even different chip sets. Possible?

Different manufacturers are OK. Different chipsets, no.

Checking in... thinking I'm zeroing in on a 6950. Just going to monitor prices for a couple days.

Corsair SSD is going to be a shellshocker on newegg today. Just the one I was looking at as well... so probably picking that up later today.

That Corsair 90GB SSD is available now. It's $90 after a $30 mail in rebate. I just picked one up.

$200 no rebate.
In all fairness, that is only the 1 GB version.
Thanks zas but yea I should've made it clear... Looking for the 2 gb version
My understanding is that unless it's a reference card and you are planning to flash it to a virtual 6970, the 2 GB doesn't out perform the 1 GB much, if at all.

At high resolutions, that RAM is crucial.

Did not know this.. I did plan on eventually taking advantage of xfire though. My reasoning for the 6950 is because we're getting close to the 7xxx series and I didn't want to pay for the really high end cards at their price when I'm going to be itching to upgrade soon. However I do want to have it built soon so I figured the 6950 would work for now. Thoughts? Advice?

ok since I have a "fresh clean" system

I need something free to burn discs.

1) Just to create data discs

2) To actually create dvd's - don't mind paying something small for something decent but would not be used often

TIA

Windows 7 Movie Maker would be just fine, and it is free.

thanks, I'm see Windows DVD Maker is that different than Movie Maker?I sse now I can just burn a disc by right clicking on the dvd drive.... Need to get used to Win7. :bag:

OK i lied. newegg has sapphire as the feature brand for today. Getting ready to pull the trigger on their 6970. gets down to 299 after rebate... plus the newegg credit through google will bring this card down to 279 after all rebates. You guys have approx 30 mins to talk me out of it or I'm pulling the trigger and will be building early next week.

Finally got the Win7 issues resolved. Go figure as soon as I get a native English speaker on the phone the problem gets solved in a few minutes. But it took 4 calls to get to that guy.

So now I can start loading up software. Got two weeks off for Christmas break and this build will be just in time to get some Starcraft 2 on.

Also, the new monitor showed up. F me it's like 3 times the size of my old one.

So heres the update:

i5 2500k/ASUS p8z68 - $210

Corsair 8 gb RAM - $25 (after rebate)

Samsung DVDRW - $22

Sapphire 6970 - $280

Corsair 90 gb ssd- $90 (after rebate)

Corsair 650w PSU - $80

HAF 922 - $80

Win 7 64bit - $80

Thermalright HR-02 Macho - $50

Grand total.... ~$917

OK so I think the mobo isn't recognizing my card. Also not able to get an Internet connection. Tried installing the drivers but no dice.

Card is seated properly as far as I can tell. Took it out and put it back in. It wasn't working at all. I had two PCI power cords plugged into it and when I unplugged one of them it started running. In BIOS put PCI16 as first device to read. It does not give me the option to disable the onboard VGA. Installed drivers for CD.

Also unsure of which cord to use with the new monitor. It came with 3 different ones.

Also, cannot get the Internet.

:help:

Update: When I put my old card in it works. Also it shows the Ethernet issue so I think these problems are closely related and it looks like maybe it's some sort of sequence thing I need to do. Not sure.

2nd Update: F me that took a long time but everything is up and running now.

I have a quick question regarding Windows OS.

If I purchase a device that comes with Windows 7 OS installed on it like this...

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/pd/productID.224518200/parentCategoryID.44066900/categoryID.57543800/list.true?siteID=Es5Ekr9eEBk-m9jDFX31wK1rfzt2MMTeFA

... but I don't plan to use Windows 7 on that device, can I simply use my licence to install it on a new build or even upgrade a machine currently running Windows Vista? It seems logical I should be able to since I've paid for the licence but I'm not sure how to do that. Anyone have a link on a step-by-step to do that?

Started assembling today. The HAF case mounts the PSU on the bottom. First for me. It looks like there's vent holes so I'm going to go ahead and install it fan side down as even with all the case fans, it seems it will be sucking hot air right off the GPU or CPU if it's facing up. Might leave the box sitting on my desk instead of underneath to avoid carpet issues.

Stalled out because the HAF 922 case has no 2.5" bays or 3.5"->2.5" adapters so had to order one.

Mobo, CPU, CPU cooler, GPU, memore are all installed. A bit miffed by the fact that the vid card fans point down instead of up towards the rear and top case fans.

I also noticed that the Z68 can provide a hybrid HDD solution by allowing a 64GB SSD to act as the cache for the HD. Might explore that at a later date.

if you have it on disc then yes you canmost places just make a partition on your hard drive with the disc on there. im sure theres a way to burn that to a dvd

Now, I'm all sucked into the hardware/upgrade world again. Been a good 10 years... :sigh:

Anywhoos, I'm having a hard time dissuading myself from buying an Intel Dawson Creek mSata to enable the Smart Response Technology so that I can still have my SSD set up on the SATA 3 connector and speed up whatever doesn't go no the SSD.

Also looking at all the room in the case and wondering how long I can hold off on buying another 560 to Crossfire. That one, I think I can wait and see if the price goes down with the release of the 7xxx AMD cards.
