Mad Cow! Holiday Computer building (1 Viewer)

It's been a long while since I've built a system...do you still have to pair the ram?

Or can a system run those three sticks with no problem?

I can't even add the i5 2500K to my cart any more, so you're one step ahead of me.At this point if you haven't already ordered online, I think you're stuck going to the store on BF and trying to work the combo that way.I have read on other deal forums that they might actually have a decent stock of the $150 2500Ks, so there's a possibility you might not have to queue up to get it.

For the rigs we want to build, the RAM needs to be bought in pairs. The 3xXGB deals are for a different chipset.
 
The Fry's BF ads are up (Page 1 & Page 2). Mostly a whole lot of "meh". These are the 12AM doorbusters, supposedly they will have a different ad for 6AM door busters.

Two good deals, but probably not worth queueing up over:

4x4GB Corsair DDR3 for $30AR + tax.

120GB Corsair F3 SSD for $120AR + tax.

Both B&M only.

Only one video card in the ad and it's horribly low-end.

If you're going to be there anyway, the other deals that are good enough to jump on are:Corsair 2x4GB DDR3 for $25ARSamsung DVDRW Burner for $18I'm on the fence for the 700W Cooler Master PSU ($50AR). That's not a bad deal, but I have a bias to Seasonic and Corsair and hope to see a good deal on either of those.

Definitely a good case at a good price. You wouldn't be going wrong with this one but my personal opinion is that the $60AR Cooler Master case is a better value. But if you are willing to pay a bit more for a nicer build and a few more features, this Corsair deal is also a good one.My bias here is always to the lower-end cases, just FYI. Some would swear by more expensive ones, but I tend to funnel my extra $ into hardware versus the case.

 
I like that the other one had 5 stars with 1000+ reviews. I usually don't like to scrimp on a case but if it's got everything you need at value why not?

Which case is that?Man, I have been so busy at work I have not checked in here. I, too, am curious if there will be any screaming video card deals. My home rig is an i7 950 with 12 GB RAM and all this talk is making me want a Sandy Bridge :hot: I went with the 950 last year just as the initial SB chips were gone thanks to the USB bug in the mobos. If I had patience, I could have waited a couple of months, but I didn't. :bag: Not like the 950 is short on power, though. :nerd:

Regarding your i7, I had a friend who was itching to upgrade to Sandy Bridge, and after doing all the research I told him he would get better results by just spending $500 on a new video card versus $500 on a CPU/mobo/vidcard combined. I don't know what resolution you game at, but he's at 2560x1600 and clearly the GPU matters more than the CPU in that case.

I think you won't mind missing out on Sandy Bridge too much when Ivy Bridge hits in March. Looks to be a nice step up.

Oh I know. I am actually running Eyefinity with a modded 6950 to 6970. Res is 5760X1200. I am just better off waiting to see where the 7XXX series falls at this point.
 
So, Microcenter sucks ###. I've tried twice now to order the combo from earlier and have my friend pick it up and neither time, the store has had any record of it. I call customer support and they show my account as locked but can't tell me why.

They did say that the combo deal should be good through the 4th and that you can't combo the CPU byitself deal. The combo deal ends up being cheaper - or should I buy the CPU at $150 and try and wait for a mobo by itself?

I'd do the combo deal. Newegg's BF sale is posted and it blows. No mobo sales of merit and no video card sales of merit.

A few posts ago I mentioned the RAM, the DVD Burner, and possibly the PSU as good candidates. The SSD is cheaper on NewEgg (with no tax).

yea i'm already going for those.. just thought i'd run the SSD by you.ETA: placing an order for the case you recommended. going to browse the SSDs as well.ETA: any recommendations? looking at the Samsung 830 series.. the 64 gig stays under $100 :shrug:

It seems like drifter knows what he's doing, but I thought I'd throw up some other info I found useful when I built a new gaming rig a month ago for the first time. A great experience overall and everything that I wanted to know I found on reddit - /r/buildapc here. There are great step by step guides on there from other sites with videos and the like.

Here's a couple that are worth checking out and I found useful...

This buying guide is great for getting the best bang for your buck and just gives you an idea of where different parts fit within budgets from Destitue to Extremist.

http://www.overclock.net/f/327/online-deals is a great forum in general and this thread is a place to monitor for deals where they do the digging for you!

This site is great for putting everything together in one location once you have your parts picked out and also shows where the deals are as well. Was great once I knew what I wanted and the site allowed me to get the best deals on the parts I wanted.

I ended up with this build... which runs BF3, Skyrim, and WoW (all I'm currently playing) on ultra settings flawlessly. I went a bit overboard, but had the cash to put into it.

Monitor: ASUS VG236HE Black 23" 1920X1080, 2ms, 120Hz 3D capable

Case: Corsair Graphite 600T ATX Mid-Tower

Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO

CPU: i5 2500k (Overclocked to 4.5 GHz... was so easy to overclock with the Asus UEFI BIOS, so user friendly)

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus (when I read how eazy it was to overclock the CPU, I figured why the hell not.)

GPU(s): 2 XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB (Crossfired)

PSU: OCZ ZX Series 850W Fully-Modular 80 Plus Gold High Performance

SSD: Crucial M4 128GB SATA III (for OS and Games - load times are ridiculously fast)

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB 7200 RPM (for general storage.. music, movies, etc.)

RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (all do is game, surf, and watch movies/tv ... anything over 8GB is overkill atm imo.)

It was my first time building and it went flawlessly by using the guides located in the reddit thread. Again, it was a great experience and I recommend it to anyone who is considering buying a new computer. It's so very rewarding to boot up your brand new system and know you've accomplished something!!

ETA: The wealth of information on reddit's /r/buildapc is the best collection of information I found while doing my research. I highly recommend checking it out... and I'm not just putting in a plug for my favorite website on the whole wide interwebs.

on newer games that support crossfire the 5970 will be the best out of the two. i believe the 5970's are dual GPU's in one card and really, even though the 5970 is a couple of years old it's still a beast by itself because of being 2 cards in one. because it has 2 GPU's the games you play would have to support crossfire to get the full benefit of the card. the 6970 would out perform the 5970 with games that don't support crossfire but that's it. again, almost all new games support crossfire and the 5970 will out perform a single 6970 with new games. at this point, the only reason i'd go with a 6970 would be if i were going to be getting another in the future to crossfire with... but even then in a month or two they'll be releasing the 7000 series anyway. sooooo 5970 gets my vote.

ETA: i have read that the 5970 is loud as hell... so if noise is something you're concerned with thats something to consider.

ETA2: if you are considering getting another card in the future to set up crossfire, you might want to consider just getting a 6950 2gb instead of the 6970... the performance gain is minimal and you save yourself $150-$200 in the end. i debated this myself when building my new rig.

Chances are it will be OOS by the time you see this, but give it a go anyway.

Other items that would fit your build:

$24AR Cooler Master Case. This doesn't have USB3 ports in the front which might or might not be a big deal to you. It will be really hard to find one that does at this price point (and you can just plug your USB3 devices in the back if you like).

AT says the 5970. It does suck down more power, is last-gen, is noisy, and costs slightly more. But the performance is pretty compelling.Also the size of this card is huge. Make sure it fits in your case!

OOS, damn. Thought I'd get it into cart for them to ship when it was back in stock, but no go. Thanks for the post anyway.ETA - Video card and possibly CPU cooler are all I have remaining on my build. I am re-using my case, power supply (hopefully), HDD, monitor, etc.

Prices will always drop, given enough time. Playing the waiting game for new tech can be frustrating, but if you have enough patience to wait until January then the new series should be out then. They could also come before xmas too, but for me, going through the holidays without my new toy would be tough (because it's the time of the year when I have the most vacation to game!).If you want to play today or in the next few weeks, go with deal. If you can wait, it might be worthwhile but there are no guarantees.

 
Busy til noonish today and then I'm gonna start making some more purchases. Would like to have this thing up and running in a few weeks if possible.
