Mad Max: Fury Road (1 Viewer)

Is it necessary to have seen the original Mad Max movies to appreciate this one? Or can you see it without any concept whatsoever of the original storyline? My son is 14 and he doesn't want to see it because he knows nothing about Mad Max.

I lean towards 'yes' only because this new one has virtually no story or plot.

Fury Road stands on it's own but there are some references to the past movies. Watching the first two gives you a sense of who Max is and what motivates him and the death of his family is used in Fury Road to give you a look into his psyche but the action in this movie is propelled by the current story and characters.

Has anyone mentioned that the gas would have gone bad long before this movie takes place? Sloppy writing imo.

People have liked these trailers? I don't get it. Looks like one big cartoonish car chase, mixed with Borderlands.
So you never saw any of the original Mad Max movies?
I did and thought they were all pretty terrible. I don't get it.
If you didn't like Road Warrior then stay far away for Fury Road cuz it's Road Warrior on steroids.

If you didn't like Beyond Thunderdome, well then, welcome to the club and don't let that taint your view of Fury Road.

So let me see if I can summarize this since I haven't seen it yet nor have I see any of the previous ones. Not a whole lot of plot or dialogue but a whole bunch of non-stop amazing action and it looks really well done as far as imagery, etc. That about it?

OK, I have a soon to be 14 year old who watches the walking dead with me. I think he would be fine with any violence and language, but what's the deal with breast feeding? He's my movie/TV buddy, so based on the reviews this would be cool for us, but I am not big on nudity for him yet. I am not naive, but I don't want to expose him so to speak.

You don't see an nipples if that's what you mean. The scenes is so short anyways he probably won't even notice. I mean, seriously, if he's watching the Walking Dead then breastfeeding should not even be an issue.

Thanks, it's not an issue, but I couldn't figure out from the other posts what the heck the scene was about.

All he has to do is read any of your posts if he wants to see that.

BURRRRRRNNNNN! ;)

here's another way to look at it. If you liked The Transporter or Crank then you'll like this movie

LOL, geez. Not a joke at all. I said I am not naive, but I'm a dad and I actually do try and make sure he knows how he should behave. He's a great kid and he knows R rated movies aren't what we do together, so I just wanted to know what the heck that scene was. Sorry, but hearing about a breast feeding scene in an R-rated violence filled movie just made me want to ask.

Tell me, would you show porn to your 13 year old son? I wouldn't, so I guess we differ there.

LOL, you know it isn't and that was just an exaggeration, but a breastfeeding scene I have never scene in an R-rated violent movie could easily <> breastfeeding at Starbucks. You have older kids, so I hope you at least know what I am saying. I don't let my son swear and he knows not to, but I am not naive enough to think that he doesn't know every single one in the book. I know he does and he has always been good about listening to me. To some here it may be hypocritical, but I let him know what I don't think he should watch. He's a great kid, so I don't really care what some FBGs think.

stbugs - Serious answer: The breastfeeding scene is quick and fairly painless. There is no nipple shown. Not a spoiler, but it's about 10 fat ladies sitting in a room with plastic type cups on the end of their breasts. For a 14 year old boy, he's seen much worse. I wouldn't sweat it too much. He's probably seeing more if he looks at a Victoria's Secret catalog or the SI swimsuit edition. If I had a 14 year old boy who I watched TWD with, I would feel comfortable taking him to this movie.

Also, I agree with you. Raise your kids how you want. Don't worry about what people on a message board say. I always laugh when people who don't know me give me advice on how to properly raise my kid they don't know.

Breakdown of what you do and don't see in regard to your kid...

The breastfeeding scene isn't sexual, it's just kind of weird. Like sheik said, a bunch of large women in some kind of milk harvesting room sitting in chairs with breast pumps on them. Although later, one guy ends up drinking that milk out of a bottle, a bit icky.

Although there is no nudity in the scene, a more sensual, wet t-shirt type of scene happens at one point in the movie with a bunch of girls running around in pretty skimpy harem type outfits, one of which is pretty up front and a bit see through.

There is a scene with a woman up in a cage who is completely nude. Here bikini areas (top and bottom) are strategically covered by her long hair and camera shot. It's also from a distance.

The worst part, the baby scene, I thought was pretty bad. Yes, like many said, not as visually graphic as it could have been. But how bad does cutting a baby out of a dead woman have to be for it to be "bad enough". You see some cord, he tugs on it and cuts it, you see the dead baby's feet. I through it was pretty gruesome and definitely too much for a kid, that would definitely be the worst part for me. I brought my 15yo son and was sorry I did after that. It was definitely the worst part of the movie to me and far over my line of what is and isn't acceptable for my kids to see. I read a parents guide about it that mentioned the breast feeding and the nude woman you didn't really see any of and thought it was close to my line of what is ok but there was no mention at all of the baby scene. If I waited a day or two I would have gotten a fuller picture of what was in it before exposing my kid to that and definitely wouldn't have taken him.
Saying that, even with that particular scene aside, overall I didn't think it was that great. It was great action, fun chase and fight movie, stylistically interesting, but absolutely ZERO story, plot, character development, etc.. I didn't really care what happened to anyone. Maybe I'm just getting old, I probably would have liked it better when I was younger. I really like post-apocalyptic movies and fiction and I like there to be some actual story. But if you just want some awesome stunts and explosions it's probably one of the purest action only movies I've ever scene. There isn't much else but the chase, an entire movie of it.

Oh, and while the guitar dude was an AWESOME idea I thought his actual playing was lame. Could have been SO much better with an actual guitar player up there. Should have had Steve Vai or Zach Wylde up there shredding through the movie, how much could that have possibly cost?

Zero story?

Yes, zero story
the story may have been light, but I found the characters very engaging. I found myself actively cheering for Furiosa, and I was genuinely concerned about her in act 3. Furiosa in Fury Road reminded me a lot of John McLane in Die Hard, which is another exceptional action film.

I will take a character that makes me feel something over plot depth...especially in a popcorn summer action movie.

Agreed. I have a 15 year old boy that I watch TWD with and took him to see this after seeing it myself. I am actually a bit surprised that it is rated 'R'.

Thanks, last thing I worry about is advice raising my kids from the FFA. Also, appreciate the real response on the scene itself.

Yeah, sounds kind of tame based on the comments here.

The baby scene, while not graphic, could be too intense for younger viewers.
Parental guidance is advised. Basically, I think that any dad thinking about taking kids should be required to see it first without them to make sure it's appropriate. Feel free to show this thread to your babymommas to support that position, if necessary. It's responsible parenting, nothing more.

I agree that the camera work and lack of CGI added a sense of bizarre realism that probably could not have been attained otherwise. That was a big part of the movie. It was crazy, yet somehow believable.

I remember watching scenes in Avatar where I forgot I was watching pure CGI.

But mostly, practical effects always look better.

Just saw the trailer to the Mad Max video game due out in September. Looks pretty sweet. The trailer I saw only showed the PS4. Not sure if it's an exclusive or something.

Yeah, this does look pretty damn good. The voice of Max sounds like the guy from the Uncharted series.

I think my favorite scene was when he walked up to the tanker and here are all these gorgeous chicks just spraying water everywhere like some kind of post apocalyptic Motley Crüe video. And look they got bolt cutters and they are freeing there #######, quite literally right in front of you. Surprised they didn't have a glass of scotch waiting for him.

Maybe it was the sound system or the constant car noise but I had trouble hearing about 50% of the dialogue.

Love the nonstop action, I dont put it above Road Warrior though.

I don't really either. It was cool for a modern action flick. I though Max's voice sounded poorly dubbed or something. There wasn't much at all in the way of character development on either side. More like a collection of great scenes than an actual great movie. Still a lot of fun though and a movie that didn't forget what it was.
