Mad Men on AMC (1 Viewer)

My biggest beef with the show is the splitting up of the final season. I said it then, and I'll say it again: bad idea.

That said, a bad episode of Mad Men is like bad sex or bad pizza; you can't really complain too much.

Yeah. It's kind of unfair to compare a show to Breaking Bad, but that's a show that was definitely heading to a conclusion as it concluded. Mad Men doesn't really seem like it's going anywhere in particular. I'm willing to let it play out before I get too critical, but it just seems like it's going to be more of the same for a while, and then Don Draper will become a lumberjack and it will be over.

That's probably a lot of the issues. They've already had a finale in season 7 and now they do a total reset with barely any time left before the end. Would have made more sense to have some kind of a mid season cliffhanger where they could have some momentum.

 
Mad Men has never been that type of show. With something like Breaking Bad you were presented with a beginning, a middle, and eventually an end. MM has never been like that. It has been made up of many, many different story arcs...some of which have been resolve but not all.

I really don't think we're going to get a BB-type ending. And that's OK.

 
The show is about characters. There isn't some overarching story other than Don's demons and attempts at bettering himself and failing etc.

I actually liked this episode even though Megan is beyond annoying at this point.

Watched it a second time and liked it better. Still don't care about Diane at all but somehow that's going to tie in to whatever the conclusion is.

I just don't get the waitress thing. I'm just trying to imagine a scenario where I'll give a #### either way if Don ends up chick or not. Aren't there enough original characters that Don could be interacting with in these last episodes? You know, the people in the show that we've invested 7 seasons in? Maybe his daughter, Peggy, Roger...just someone else...anyone else besides the ####### waitress.

I don't think they care what we've invested in whom. And that's fine. I don't think we're getting the closure so many think we are owed. In the end, it'll be a ten year slice of these characters lives. Nothing more, nothing less.

In terms of the waitress, Don is looking for a new relationship. At this point in his life, that sounds about right.

I don't think they care what we've invested in whom. And that's fine. I don't think we're getting the closure so many think we are owed. In the end, it'll be a ten year slice of these characters lives. Nothing more, nothing less.

The finale should be Don and the waitress getting married, and all the characters are at the reception, including Betty, Megan, the gay guy from season 1, literally everyone. And they're all laughing and having such a great time that you just know they're gonna be just fine. People who didn't get along like Peggy and Joan are seen hugging. Megan calls Roger "dad". At the very end, they all face the camera and bow, and there's a musical number. Then Don looks right into the camera and thanks the viewers, and a big old-fashioned "The End" appears on the screen. As the closing credits roll, we see bloopers from every season. That's how you end a series.

Diane is a tool to show not only that Don makes bad decisions, but is rash to fall into love despite not even knowing what love is. He's the guy who said "love was invented by people like me to sell pantyhose"...yet he's still chasing it and he doesn't even know why. All the sex is just him trying to fill the emptiness in his life and this is his way of trying to get out of that.

This has some potential but how about there also being a twist as well? Like they really all died in the Cuban missile crisis and the waitress storyline is hell?

Diane is a tool to show not only that Don makes bad decisions, but is rash to fall into love despite not even knowing what love is. He's the guy who said "love was invented by people like me to sell pantyhose"...yet he's still chasing it and he doesn't even know why. All the sex is just him trying to fill the emptiness in his life and this is his way of trying to get out of that.

Ok, fine but who didn't know this already? Why does it have to be continually beaten into our heads over and over and over? We all get it, Don's ####ed in the head and drinks too much.

 
Okay, the finale should show Don 7 years later, it's the disco era so he's wearing polyester and gold chains, but he's bloated and sweaty from all the booze, with longer hair and sideburns. He's at Studio 54 doing lines in the bathroom, then he's dancing to some Donna Summer out on the dance floor, talking to women who are visibly repulsed by his appearance. Then the music becomes muted and distorted, we get a closeup of Don with the crazy eyes and sweat pouring off his face. The camera assumes Don's point of view and starts spinning. Everyone on the dance floor is staring back at him. One guy gets right up in the camera and says heyyyy mannnnn arrrrre yoouuu okaaaayyyy in that slowed-down audio effect, and Don collapses. Next shot is Don laying there with his eyes open and a calm expression, and a slight grin as he takes his last breath. The camera slowly pulls back up to the ceiling and we see the entire dance floor, people frantically trying to revive him. Maybe play some uptempo big band over that with the horns, maybe some Dean Martin. Next scene is a montage of Peggy all butched out living with her girlfriend, cooking dinner, Sally at college, Harry going back to a lady's apartment and getting ambushed by a guy with a knife, Betty talking to one of her patients at her pyschiatry practice, etc, etc, etc. The final scene is at the agency, now called Sterling Cooper Harris Campbell Olson. There's a handsome young ad exec with dark hair giving a pitch to Jordache jeans. The Jordache people look at each other and nod in agreement. The young ad exec looks at the camera and winks. Fade to black with some BeeGees playing over the final credits. Still show bloopers from past seasons imo. Collect Emmies.

Well we didn't know that he would do it again after Megan, so they sort of had to show him looking for love/trying to fix-help a woman again. The question should be, why'd they make her such a wet blanket/boring character? For all of Megan's and Betty's faults at least they were fun at the beginning even if they were vapid/troubled.

Yeah, maybe I'm too much of a Mad Men fanboy to be objective, because the overwhelming opinion here and in the comments following Sepinwall's review is that this episode is the worst ever.

One thing I didn't buy into was Don's fascination with the waitress. I can only trust that Weiner knows what he's doing and it will pay off.
