Manti Te'o's girlfriend who died... (1 Viewer)

He also claimed in an ESPN interview that he would call her every night for 4 weeks(?) while she was in the hospital and talk to her for 8 hours until they went to sleep - if I'm running a catfish scam on him thats a LOT of work to continue on a nightly basis. As people are saying above - for what High fives and yuks?
Yeah under the he was duped theory this would be one of the many white lies he told because he was embarrassed about either having an online girlfriend or being tricked. Clearly he wasn't talking to someone who doesn't exist for hours on a nightly basis.

In the gay scenario, I doubt that Te'o is the one that "kills her off." Obviously it's all speculation, but if I were writing it as a screenplay, Tuiasopopo would call Manti and tell him it's over. And that the Twitter account is just going to go dark. And that Te'o will tell everyone that Lennay died or Tuiasopopo will reveal that he's gay.
I'm trying to do a little Occum's Razor on this, and for the life of me, I'm still drawing a blank.Where I am is that the simplest solution is that he was ####ed with by these other guys, because you guys find bizzare things funny. A random trip to :e: shows you that. It would not suprise me in the SLIGHTEST if I heard that 3 or 4 ###-clowns kept up a Catfish-like prank of a religious doofus for 2 years straight. Heck, the longer it went on, the funnier it would be to them. This doesn't mean they are sociopaths. It just means they are 20 year old ###-hats with strange senses of humor. The ONLY thing that you have to "stretch" to believe is that some guy is gullible enough to get duped. And I believe there are people out there that are.As far as family members saying that they met her, or him saying he met her to family members -- Again, I find it believable that a person would lie about that. Have any of you seen those Jimmy Kimble skits where he asks people on the street who they thought did better in some imaginary (rediculous) competition that was supposedly on TV the night before? He'll get dozens of perfectly reasonable people to say, on camera, that they watched the competition and thought Person X won. (the episode I saw asked people to opine on the "First Lady Debate" the night before between Michelle Obama and Anne Romney. And people claimed they watched it!Anyway, all of that is more believable to me than Te'o was in on some hoax to fool the country . . . for what, exactly? To throw people off the scent that he's gay? Please. Only a true idiot would think you would need to do something like that. With all the fake twitter accounts, and pulling some random girl's photo? It just doesn't make sense. To get more press for a Heisman? Really? I don't buy it.It is more believable to me that he is a ####### who got fooled. Although I like the story more if he was in on it.
:goodposting: How can anyone posting in the FFA not believe that people wouldn't pull a catfishing expedition just because. If you had hooked Manti, a potential NFl player and the ND football captain, you probably would keep it going just for the fun of it since you were the ones who tried it in the first place.Again, I don't know the truth and I could easily see Manti being in on it, but some guy who didn't make it and was jealous could easily start this and keep it going.

Problem with that theory is that he was neither 3 years ago

Wait, is this the play everyone was talking about? Bowled over? I was expecting Earl Campbell or even Jacquizz Rodgers running through Earl Thomas last week. How can someone be "bowled" over when the RB isn't moving forward and it looks more like he missed his dive at the RB and Lavy was easily able step aside and push him further to the side.By the way, for a post above, doing a scam like that on Manti doesn't have to involve $$$ or some real goal at the end. There are a lot of effed up people (just look at the trolls on the FFA) who enjoy iSports just to screw with people for nothing other than their own satisfication. That said, I have no idea if Manti knew or not. Hard to believe he didn't know, but also not impossible to believe he didn't know and made up a lot of stuff out of embarassment/having to explain why he never met her.
its the closest one i found.. i didnt see the whole game so i cannot be certain

i never really bought the girlfriend fake, she's prolly a wolf.
Both are wolves imo
I don't think Manti is faking. I think a wolf would have a better fake in store than this. Can you really see Manti on the wolf board asking his teamates what to do and them saying "pretend you got duped and she was an internet girlfriend!"they'd come up with something better

Why does anyone care? That's what I don't get  It baffles me that this has become the "news" it has.
I'm actually starting to feel kind of sorry for him. If he was in on it, then he was using the story to cover something up. Whether it was the fact that he's gay, socially awkward, or whatever the original reason was, it seems that he got trapped in the story he created and it spiraled out of control. A fake cancer story is pretty messed up, so I think some criticism is warranted and lying definitely has its consequences. But the vitriol and glee at his situation is a bit unsettling to me. He's a guy that at around 19 years old dug himself into a dumb lie for whatever reason he thought he needed to at the time. His entire world is caving in on him now right before the most important moment of his life. And plenty of people seem content to pile on and rip him to shreds.
So is the "interest" because his made up girlfriend died of cancer or that he made up a girlfriend in the first place. I just don't get it. A 19 year old kid making up a girlfriend??? You'd think this is the first time anyone's heard of such a thing.
Made up girlfriend, had her get into a horrible car accident, then gave her Leukemia, then had her beat Leukemia, then had her die of Leukemia the same day his grandmother died. And he goes on TV and does interviews with sports networks as they do heart-tugging personal profiles of his plight and his fake dead girlfriend becomes a centerpiece of the miraculous ND championship run and Te'o's own Heisman campaign. Yeah, nothing to see here. Boooring.
I could probably see this if it were the middle of summer and nothing else was going on. Someone PM me when you guys get it all figured out...TIA...at this point, the folks obsessed with this kid's story are more fascinating to me.
Oh come on Commish. I know you love being "different" but this is a ridiculous take. It's perhaps the weirdest sports story I've ever heard.
It's not a sports story. It's a story about a guy who happens to play sports. What I really don't get are the folks suggesting he did this for attention and belittling him all the while giving him the attention he is asking for. Someone above suggested it degrades those battling similar diseases, and with that I wholeheartedly agee. I also believe those giving him the attention he's seeking are doing the same.

Likely turned. Their interactions were so forced since D2

Whole lotta naivete going on in here. Bunch of believers without any shred of evidence to support this crazy made up story. Of course I guess that's how christianity works too, huh?

So, how would Teo's dad play into the Gay theory? He's shown himself to be a controlling tool with the newspaper ban....does that lead you to believe Teo would be afraid of him and drive him to hide his sexual preference even more, or does it lead you to believe he controls almost everything in Manti's life and was in on the hoax?
The interview I heard with Te'o's high school teammate made it sound like Manti's dad is über-controlling. Basically a Todd Marinovich's dad type figure. The teammate said that at the conclusion of their high school practices, while all the guys were leaving the field, Manti's dad would be setting up cones and the rope ladder for Manti to run more drills.

He also claimed in an ESPN interview that he would call her every night for 4 weeks(?) while she was in the hospital and talk to her for 8 hours until they went to sleep - if I'm running a catfish scam on him thats a LOT of work to continue on a nightly basis. This story is all anyone is talking about. That's plenty of motivation for a group of guys to come up with a gotcha scheme.Alternatively, I think not even the perpetrators of the scheme could have imagined it going on this long. They may have thought they would mess with Manti one night or week. Next thing you know they are like "holy #### this guy is buying this?..what should we say/do next?" Then here we are.

It's a story because: It's fun, it's funny, it's kind of rediculous, it involeves journalists being revealed as dumb-asses, it involves a pretend dead girlfriend, it involves Notra Dame football (who people love to hate), it's good theater, there are lies, deception, speculation. It's got just about everything we Americans desire. The only thing this could possibly be missing is drugs. And studs.commish: Come in, the water (mud) is beautiful. Splash around with us. Just no moralizing. That ain't allowed in these parts. THAT GOES DOUBLE FOR YOU, TIM.

Another layer to this is that Manti went to HS with Tuiasaopo right? This wasnt a complete stranger that duped(?) him.Edit: As many have pointed out..this is incorrect they didnt go to HS together. My bad.

:goodposting: I don't think he wants any part of this attention whether he was duped or involved.

The Bears need a MLB now that Urlacher is done/almost done. I really hope they don't spend a pick on this kid.
Guys have had much worse character issues than this coming out of college. This is a weird story, no doubt about it. But I don't think it's one that will affect his ability to play at the pro level.

Surely you can see the difference between the attention he was receiving before he was busted vs the attention he was receiving now. NATURALLY, I'm taking about the attention NOW and NOT the attention he was receiving all football season long. indeed

It's a lot of work just to pull one over on your famous friend.

 I'll leave that to you guys. I didn't mean to piss in anyone corn flakes and quite frankly I'm surprised at how many folks felt the need to defend their "interest" in this. Who the hell am I that you should care enough to defend that?? This whole thing reminds me of that guy here in NC who supposedly shot up his daughter's laptop and how up in arms the FFA got over what turned out to be absolutely nothing. I expect that kind of overreaction from this place, but I don't get it nationally. I'll watch from afar and enjoy the comedy.

I think it's pretty weak to say that tweet indicates the beginning of the relationship."Hey, Manit, I'm on Twitter now.""Me too! I'm @MTeo_5."Then on Twitter, "she" says: "Hi, nice to meet you."And he replies: nice to meet u too ma'amI don't think you can take that tweet to necessarily mean that's when they really first met.

Another layer to this is that Manti went to HS with Tuiasaopo right? This wasnt a complete stranger that duped(?) him.
Who better to dupe you than someone you really trust?
Edit: They didnt go to high school together, but did apparently know each other. And Manti is not the first person this guy duped.
Te'o and Tuiasosopo definitely know each other. In May 2012, Te'o was retweeting Tuiasosopo, who had mentioned going to Hawaii. Wrote Te'o, "sole"—"bro," in Samoan—"u gotta come down." In June, Te'o wished Tuiasosopo a happy birthday. How they know each other isn't clear. We spoke to a woman we'll call Frieda, who had suggested on Twitter back in December that there was something fishy about Lennay Kekua. She was Facebook friends with Titus Tuiasosopo, so we asked her if she knew anything about Ronaiah."Manti and Ronaiah are family," she said, "or at least family friends." She told us that the Tuiasosopos had been on-field guests (of Te'o or someone else, she didn't know) for the Nov. 24 Notre Dame-USC game in Los Angeles. USC was unable to confirm this, but a tweet from Tuiasosopo's since-deleted account suggests he and Te'o did see each other on that West Coast trip. "Great night with my bro @MTeo_5! #Heisman #574L," Ronaiah tweeted on Nov. 23, the night before the game. And there was something else: Tuiasosopo had been in a car accident a month before Lennay's supposed accident. Was this Lennay Kekua? We spoke with friends and relatives of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo who asserted that Ronaiah was the man behind Lennay. He created Lennay in 2008, one source said, and Te'o wasn't the first person to have an online "relationship" with her. One mark—who had been "introduced" to Lennay by Tuiasosopo—lasted about a month before family members grew suspicious that Lennay could never be found on the telephone, and that wherever one expected Lennay to be, Ronaiah was there instead. Two sources discounted Ronaiah's stunt as a prank that only metastasized because of Te'o's rise to national celebrity this past season.

I'm @MTeo_5."Then on Twitter, "she" says: "Hi, nice to meet you."And he replies: nice to meet u too ma'amI don't think you can take that tweet to necessarily mean that's when they really first met.
Even if this was the begining of "The Duping", why did he lie to extend it for two years prior?
