Manti Te'o's girlfriend who died... (1 Viewer)

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8859077/manti-teo-notre-dame-fighting-irish-denies-being-part-hoax-late-girlfriendSo he shows this DM history in the picture from 1/16, this week between Te'o and Lennay. But wasn't it proven/shown this week that the person behind the old Lennay twitter account doesn't run the twitter anymore and it was reregistered by someone else this week?
That's bizarre. The Deadspin article says that the @LennayKay screen name was deactivated in September 2012 (and changed to @LoveMSMK).
Was it ever disclosed what MSMK stood for?I know it was the Twitter account screen name and on the photo Tui had the girl send, as she held those letters up for the "slideshow".

I'm guessing that the "MK" part stood for Melelengei Kekua, which was her "real" name (according to Te'o's interview with Sports Illustrated).

Who cares? 16 pages? Really?
It's the lead on sportscenter. It was on all the national morning news shows. He's a projected top 10 pick on the biggest college football program ever. He created a fake human either to hide his sexuality, gain some weird publicity, or for reasons none of us know. He said this fake person had cancer, a real illness that everybody here has been effected by directly or indirectly. This is the strangest sports story I've ever heard and it's certainly a bigger news story than somebody cheating on a freaking bike race.
 It just all seems meaningless and dumb to me. His personal life means nothing to me and really shouldn't mean much to much of the public.

Even in best case scenario he's still a real piece of work:

He never made an attempt to visit her in the hospital."It never really crossed my mind. I don't know. I was in school," he told ESPN.
Not to mention that even if he was hoaxed he still manipulated the media with fake stories about the love he had for his girlfriend in order to better his Heisman chances.

It's only meaningful to me since he could end up on the Chargers, something I'd hate to see.

The oddity of the story, in and of itself, is what makes it interesting to people. Throw in the fact that he's the most well known player on one of the most well known teams in the country and that's why people "care."

Yup. And since the story is not only odd, but likely incomplete and inaccurate, it's fun to speculate on what really happened. It's like a chance to test your instincts vs. what eventually comes out.

He provides an astonishing amount of details in that interview. And Schaap said he was perfectly composed and believable. So either Te'o is the greatest actor ever, or he's telling the truth. It's just unfortunate that he chose to be interviewed with no cameras and no audio. Most people won't take the time to read that.It now seems that he's simply the most gullible person on the planet, and kept going along with it after he found out it was a hoax out of sheer embarrassment.

Yep - It reads like he thinks it's still real.

Jeremy Shaap couldn't beat a paper bag in a battle of wits.I love how the alleged pranksters spent hours exchanging quotes from scripture with Te'o. That sounds like a hoot.

Has anyone bothered to ask who the girl was on the other end of the phone? Was it just the Tuiososopo guy doing a high voice?
I've been asking since the beginning. Either there were no calls, he's gay, or there's some chick involved that hasn't been discussed yet.

While I have no doubt that many of those details were true, he's also had months now to hone his story and/or alibi, and he has a bunch of handlers at this point both from ND as well as whoever he's hired professionally to massage all of this. In short, above and beyond the implausibility of it all, I'm skeptical of just how much of this story is coming from him.

I'm not sure why you are completely discounting the fact that he made the calls. It's just that nobody has asked to see phone bills yet. Most people have national calling plans with free nights/weekends on their phone, so making a call from South Bend to California after 7pm would cost him no more than calling someone right down the street.I would like to see phone records though.

I don't think anyone is questioning the practicality of said calls. Just seems like a lot of effort on the part of the pranksters. I am guessing he embellished quite a bit here.

what am I discounting? that Tuiasosopo made the calls and pretended to be a female? Yeah, I'm not buying that.If Teo's story is true that he had an online/phone relationship with a female, then I think there's a female involved on the other side. Seems pretty obvious.

Te'o stated in the Schaap interview that Tuiasosopo admitted on Wednesday that there were 2 other people involved (one male, one female). Both people are believed to be Tuiasosopo's cousins.

I agree, and I misunderstood your comment. I always just assumed there was a female accomplice in play.

I'm not buying the Schaap interview. No footage and a lawyer present? This has all the credibility of Stuart Scott interviewing kobe and closing with a fist bump.

Slapping around a paranoid nutjob anti-Semite who's virtually on his death bed? Now that's the kind of low-hanging fruit J-Schaap can handle.

If this is true (and I've been in the "Te'o is extremely gullible and has been playing along for awhile out of embarrassment" camp), what's the endgame for Tuiasosopo? Sounds like he and Te'o were friends regardless of this Kekua thing. Is it a ploy to get closer to Te'o (Tui seems like he might be gay? Has this been confirmed?)? Is it a ploy to get a bunch of his cash when he makes it pro? Just a harmless prank on a friend that went horribly wrong?

Still unsure why so many people are eager to accept Te'o's word on this stuff.

what's the endgame for Tuiasosopo?
From the transcript: this may or may not have been the motivation initially.
JEREMY SCHAAP: So she's got leukemia now. At this point or at any point, is there any kind of request for money? Is there anything that, you know, that would suggest some kind of financial motivation here?MANTI TE'O: Early on, she said that she was going to send me money, actually. And she wanted to send it and she wanted to directly deposit it into my account. So she wants to know my checking account number, which I didn't give her.JEREMY SCHAAP: Why not?MANTI TE'O: I'm not giving my checking account number. I don't care who you are. I'm not giving my checking account number out to you. Then she went on and asked my best friend, Robby. Hey, Rob, I want to help you guys out with groceries or help you guys pay for the bills for the house. I've saved up some money, you know. Give me your checking account number, and I'll put it in there.JEREMY SCHAAP: And he did what?MANTI TE'O: He didn't. I told him, whatever you do, do not give out your checking account number.JEREMY SCHAAP: That didn't raise any alarm bells for you?MANTI TE'O: No, because when she did that, when she asked me, I actually went to the credit union and asked them, "Hey, if somebody wanted to put money into my account and they asked for my checking account number, could they pull money out?" And they told me no. So that red flag went immediately down.JEREMY SCHAAP: But you went to the credit union and checked it out?MANTI TE'O: Yep, at Notre Dame.JEREMY SCHAAP: The student credit union?MANTI TE'O: Yes.JEREMY SCHAAP: That's where you had your checking account?MANTI TE'O: Uh-huh.

And we just got to know each other just as acquaintances. It was nothing big, nothing spectacular, nothing greater than that. And what people don't realize is it ended.
Well no #### Manti after you talked about the 'love of your life' every chance you got.

So the motive might have been to put money in Te'o's checking account?Between that and the hours spent exchanging quotes from scripture and studying the Bible, it sounds like the "praksters" were getting the #### end of the stick.

MANTI TE'O: Before the car crash, it was -- we were talking. I was talking to her. I was talking to other girls. Just trying to get to know people. I was a college player, just trying to get a feel of who was who.JEREMY SCHAAP: There was a lot of girls.MANTI TE'O: There were a lot of girls. Not a lot. A couple.
JEREMY SCHAAP: Now she's out of the coma and you guys just resume again.MANTI TE'O: Obviously, our relationship has gone to another level where I'm just exclusive to her.JEREMY SCHAAP: Why?MANTI TE'O: Because I wanted to. When she got into an accident, I was like, OK, this is who I want to be with.
He fell in love with a girl in a coma?

MANTI TE'O: She told me she was a Stanford alum. She went to Stanford. After her dad passed away, she took over her dad's business, Clark's Construction. Supposedly. I don't know if that's real.

I'm watching the BCSC again right now....I might as well have been playing MLB for ND. Teo can't do anything right.
