Why couldn't the "doctors" and "nurses" be the same people scamming him in the first place? I doubt he was being told anything complex medically since all he could say when asked by Thamel what happened to her was "a lot of different injuries". For the record, I don't buy his story but everyone keeps looking for a smoking gun, forgetting that a lot of it could easily be explained away by him by either saying it was the same people lying to him or that he was just perpetuating the lie once he found out, out of embarrassment. We know, at least, he's guilty of the latter.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, you think two 22 year olds who currently under the harshest imaginable light of public scrutiny decided their best plan of action would be to convince this female friend to lie for them to the press about who was involved (why she would do this I'm not sure) so that Te'o would look better and then he'd eventually pay off Tui for his work in finding this fiend to who fake ratted him out to OTL. Because hey, they've been doing such a bang-up job of hiding their lies and identities and connections from the press so far, why not press their luck, right?
Fifty real dollars says that this discussion is happening between Te'o and his team right now. They're going to figure out what they can definitively blame on the hoax, and what needs to be copped to under the explanation of "I was embarrassed, so I said those things to protect myself."
