Manti Te'o's girlfriend who died... (4 Viewers)

After all this time I am still going with "beard", and the Te'o was in on the hoax.Tuiasosopo and Te'e were friends. There are pictures of Te'o with Tuiasosopo's little sister. What about the story of Tuiasosopo's previous scam? How supposedly the girl was going to show up someplace, but Tuiasosopo was always there instead. Other people thought that was stange, but I haven't seen a quote from the person that invited the "girl" to the event that thought it was strange. "Lennay Kekua" was Tuiasosopo's code name.ETA: None of this is a crime. The people calling for Te'o to turn over phone records are crazy.

No one wants anything bad to happen to him but he brought the ridicule on all himself Bob.
A stupid, naive kid got tricked and was embarrassed about it so he tried to cover it up. Yes, he deserves to be ridiculed nationally.
People still think he got duped? JeezThere is no evidence at all of this. Just his word.

might want to read the transcript of the Schapp interview. He has an explanation for meeting Tuia's little sister and the pictures with them.

do you have evidence that he wasn't duped? read the transcipt and read the Ashley York blog. its the exact same situation.

When NFL teams start doing background on him, I'm pretty sure they're going to want to see phone records.

Yup. That's when the real story comes out.

After watching the BCS again this weekend, I can't imagine someone spending a first round pick there. I don't want to ignore his great year for one game....and maybe his fragile mindset led to his poor reads and tackling...but to me he looked undersized and easily pushed around. Take out the Intagibles that were supposed to be his advantage....and nothing that special left IMO.Donta Hightower is 20 pounds heavier and went 25th last year to NE.

There is more pointing to him being in on it then him being duped. Sorry
What is pointing to him being in on it?
Everything mentioned here. The entire story just isn't plausible. He was either completely in on it or embellished aspects of the story for his own gain.
can you name something specific? it may not seem plausible to you and it didn't to me at first, but after reading some other people stories who were caught up in similar scams and what Manti said, it seems perfectly plausible.and I hate ND

Her being on her deathbed. And when Jeremy Shaap asked him why Manti didn't go to visit her in the hospital, Te'o's reply was "I didn't think of it" The love of your life is dying and you didn't think to visit her?

If he drops out of round 1 people will point to the "scandal". It could be that he is just not that great.

I agree that is the weakest part of his story. Still, I wouldn't say it isn't plausible...

The records are going to show that long phone calls to Tuiasosopo's phone number continue after Manti's fictional girlfriend was in a coma. That's why he has the cover story of "listening to her breathe for hours," which I can't believe some people are seriously buying.ETA: All the little, shady details like this are just a bit too convenient for Manti.

That's really long. I've read the first 20% or so, and that part of his story actually does sound plausible.I don't think it's all that uncommon for high school or college kids to have a female friend call up a buddy and pretend to be a hot girl who likes him. This was carried to a tremendous extreme, but the basic idea is very believable, and the details from the first 20% of that interview seem somewhat believable as well.

I'm only following this story at 30%Am I reading this right.

He at one point has stated that he would just listen to her breathe for hours on the phone while she lay in a coma?

It's all too convenient. He claims to have cared enough about her to talk to her every night but never thinks to go see her. Then when she dies he's like 'oh, she died? ok' and doesn't go to her funeral or even call her parents to send condolences. It's also very convenient that the funeral was on a football game day - strangely 11 days after her death.

sounds like you didn't read the transcript of the Schaap interview?MANTI TE'O: No, not really. Not until the USC game approached. And that's when I asked, "Hey, is there any way she can come see me?" JEREMY SCHAAP: And you asked who? MANTI TE'O: I asked her sister, U'i, and U'i was supposed to bring her. But they were having an event for Lennay at that time in their hometown. And she couldn't make it. So she said that Ronaiah was going to bring her. So, she brought her to the hotel, the Ritz Carlton hotel, and that's when I first met her, and that's when I first met, face-to-face, Ronaiah. JEREMY SCHAAP: So who does this Ronaiah present himself as? MANTI TE'O: Ronaiah presents himself as Lennay's cousin, and the older brother of this little girl, Pookah.JEREMY SCHAAP: What communication had you had with him prior to this? MANTI TE'O: The only communication I had with Ronaiah prior to this was he, in the beginning, when -- remember I told you when Lennay and I would talk and she'd just leave, she would talk about Ronaiah. And how she and him were like Bonnie and Clyde: That was her cousin, her favorite cousin, and since I didn't know where Lennay was, the only one I knew of that probably knew where Lennay was was Ronaiah. So I was asking him, "Do you know where your cousin went?" And he said, "Yeah, she went to Europe. Or, oh, yeah, I just saw her today, I'll tell her to contact you."

Jewish people bury their dead immediately after death, people in El Salvador wait til exactly the 6th day, and Hawaiian cultures wait til the 11th day for a proper ceremonial funeral.Wow, this making crap up is easy!

obviously, Ronniah didn't want Teo coming to a fake funeral so I'm pretty sure he made it a day that he knew Manti couldn't make it. Teo also goes over other reasons why he didn't go to the funeral. He did send flowers to an address he was given. the 'family' even sent him pictures to show they'd received them.

He provides an astonishing amount of details in that interview. And Schaap said he was perfectly composed and believable. So either Te'o is the greatest actor ever, or he's telling the truth. It's just unfortunate that he chose to be interviewed with no cameras and no audio. Most people won't take the time to read that.
Jeremy Shaap couldn't beat a paper bag in a battle of wits.
I think he's very good at what he does. I loved it when he

Jeremy Schaap clearly wouldn't be where he is without his last name, but that being said the Bob Knight interview frankly only confirmed everything bad that we already knew about Knight, ironically because he was such an insulting and controlling ##### to Jeremy. Remember, that interview was supposed to rehabilitate Knight's image after that choking incident. But yeah, JS was in way over his head.

yes, because he wants to be the "Internet boyfriend who just showed up..." at the hospital bed of this girl.Doesn't matter how much he cared about her, the chance of him showing up with her being sick is pretty small. How many of us showed up at Shining Path's funeral?Even if you really care (or even love) someone you know in iLife, you don't meet them for the first time at their funeral or when they are in the hospital. That's just weird...

Instead of going top 10 (crap teams) he looks like he will now slide toward the bottom of the 1st round (better teams). Might help him out in the long run even if it costs him money on his first contract.
"But, but, I want to go to the number 1 team!" /Manti

That was the house of a family member of Ronniah's.

Deadspin has a story up that basically chronicles the twitter history of Tuiasosopu pretending to be this chick...it's truly insane. The guy was really really into it. Creating other fake personas that would respond to her, responding to her from his personal account, etc. Kid is a total whackjob. He was treating this like it was his job or something.

That twitter stuff is nuts.

I was initially convinced that Te'o was in on the hoax and was using it to conceal his gay relationship with Tuiasosopo; however, I have done a full 180 over the past couple days and now believe that Te'o was legitimately duped by Tuiasosopo. I recently watched the movie "Catfish" as well as some of the MTV episodes, and the similarities between the behavior of Lennay Kekua and other fake online identities are pretty striking. It's hard to believe that people would actually go to those lengths and efforts to fool someone at first, but it is apparently not as uncommon as you would think. The alleged death of Kekua's father, her car crash, and her leukemia diagnosis all seem like fairly typical events told by these "catfishers" either to help gain sympathy to form a stronger relationship bond or to create an excuse as to why they cannot meet up in person. It was interesting that Kekau's "bro, we might have to pull the plug" event following her alleged car crash directly coincided with Te'o returning back to Hawaii for summer vacation, as it would serve as cover if Te'o actually tried to visit. Also, the fact that Kekua's funeral took place on a Saturday on which Notre Dame played helped to ensure that Te'o would not be able to attend to the funeral. Furthermore, Kekau's Polynesian identity and cultural awareness is another factor which Tuiasosopo exploited in manipulating these Polynesian football players to develop a closer emotional connection. Also, the creation of a Twitter account that supposedly belonged to Lennay's sister U'ilani, which was used to bolster the perceived authenticity of Lennay's existence. These all seem like classic "catfishing" moves from what I have seen in the documentary and MTV series. The full list of tweets recently released by Deadspin seem to suggest that Tuiasosopo used this identity to target primarily Polynesian NFL/college players, which seems plausible given that he comes from a big Polynesian NFL family. It seems like he got off on forming relationships with Polynesian NFL players and then used Lennay Kekua to build friendships with these players, perhaps in an attempt to get help promoting his aspiring music career. Based on Lennay Kekua's relationship with Te'o, Tuiasosopo was able to get Te'o to tweet about his album release and was able to hang out with Te'o prior to the USC-Notre Dame game. The piece of information that I think most strongly suggests that Te'o was legitimately duped is the information about how Tuiasosopo convinced the real life person pictured in Kekua's twitter profile to take a picture of herself holding a sign reading "MSMK" in December 2012 -- months after the fake identity of Kekua "died." This seems to support Te'o's claim that Lennay Kekua tried to reestablish the relationship in December 2012 and prove that she was still alive to Te'o. I can't think up any plausible explanation for why Tuiasosopo would have gotten this picture in December 2012 if Te'o was in on the hoax. In the end, I think the most likely scenario is that Te'o talked to this fake identity online, but later embellished and exaggerated the nature and extent of their relationship, partially because he was embarrassed about his online relationship and partially in order to take advantage of the media sympathy. The biggest question that remains under this theory is how could Te'o be so naive and gullible to be duped by this fake online persona for so long? But, given that Te'o is Mormon (a community in which the traits of naiveté and gullibility are naturally selected for amongst their population), is it really that unbelievable? I don't think so.
