Marion Grice (1 Viewer)

Tell me about him please?

If two teams are going to fight over a "nobody" on a PS, well then maybe he's not a nobody and....fill me in

ETA Marion Grice very well could've been on the Chargers' 53-man roster Sunday.

He chose another option.

Grice, a rookie sixth-round draft pick on San Diego's practice squad, took a physical Monday in Arizona and is signing a two-year deal with the Cardinals, a source said. His departure forces his ex-team to acquire a running back from outside the organization, working through a situation in which two healthy backs are currently on the roster.

Grice was the only in-house candidate the Chargers had. The Cardinals made an aggressive play for the Arizona State product, who has a say in whether he'll join an outside team's 53-man roster or remain with his current club.

Grice chose Arizona. He fills the need for depth in the wake of Jonathan Dwyer's domestic violence situation.

have him in a deep dynasty.

heard some good things about him in preseason.

sounds like a good all around back, doesn't necessarily do anything great.

saw he was signed to AZ active roster.

thanks

yeah they swooped in and signed him as San Diego had made him an offer to join their team following Woodhead's injury-he was on their PS.

Tweet read that a couple sites list both teams signing him, I only see ESPN with that.

I see 17 for 80ish yards in preseason....not much on him

ESPN paste

He was on Chargers practice squad but they had not said anything to him about even possibly being promoted and so when AZ called and offered him a job he jumped at the chance

Was this before the Woodhead injury though? I have to imagine they would rather have Grice over Draughn.

I thought he looked good toward the end of preseason. Obviously he had some growing pains starting out but few dont. They hitched their wagon to Oliver but people had some good things to say about Grice prior to his him looking mediocre in his early showings.

Yes they did. In the article I linked, he had a choice which team and chose AZ. They said this on dallas sports radio on the way home and were beating on SD a little bit as they never heard of a rook chomping at the bit to play saying nah I'll go to this other team. Usually rookies are so impressed with NFL facilities and after going thru camp and...anyway they were chatting about it

He went to school in Az so being able to go back home probably played pretty heavily in the decision, plus he knows Matthews is coming back and he'll be back down to the bottom of the depth chart. He probably thinks he has a better chance to win the #2 job in Az.

I was very interested in Marion Grice in preseason when the Chargers drafted him. And when the camp reports came in that Brandon Oliver flat outplayed him, and Grice looked pedestrian at everything I quickly lost interest in Grice, and hopped on the Oliver train. I suggest potential Grice owners to read the Oliver thread front to back to get some insight on Grice.

Arizona offers potentially a cleaner and clearer shot to potentially starting than SD, but I'd be cautious of getting too excited about Grice's ceiling. Looks like JAG.

I have him on my taxi squad in dynasty. I'm sure Grice thought the same thing I did when I heard the news. The path to playing time is easier on the Cardinals than it is on the Chargers.

I wonder if he'll be active for the first time this week after getting 3 weeks under his belt to learn the offense. People were expecting Taylor to fill in for Dwyer, who was seeing roughly 30% of the snaps and ~10 touches per game but his snaps/touches have actually been on the decline since. He barely sees the field. Subsequently, Ellington has been seeing more snaps/touches as the season has progressed. I envision two scenarios moving forward even though they may seem like long shots. Either Grice is going to be activated soon and start seeing some amount of touches in this offense in relief (he's actually more comparable to Ellington than he is Dwyer) or Ellington's workload will continue to increase/remain constant (~20 touches a game) increasing his propensity for injury and the possibility that Grice will be thrust into a starting role. There's a site that I've come to trust which uses a nifty algorithm in an attempt to predict injury. It has Ellington pegged as the highest injury risk at the RB position for the season. Obviously, I wouldn't grab him outside the deepest of redraft leagues (likely already rostered in dynasty) but just keep an eye on him. I don't think there's another team in the NFL whose been trotting out such deficient depth at the RB position on a weekly basis.

Hmmmmm. Ellington owners should be on notice I guess. I thought Ellington has done pretty well so far, not sure he is at risk of losing his starting job yet.

I'd bump this, great info / positive vibes going back a while.

interesting, thanks. Didn't find anything searching
From that original thread:

As I entered into a very large devy league(10 round draft of just devys), I needed to research more prospects. I've been in devy leagues before but nothing this deep(120 players). I stumbled across Marion Grice's name and began researching him. My first note on the kid was "WOW watch more!!!" after watching his highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjwYycQEMY4 He is my #1 draft eligible RB because he has the total package.

Marion Grice

6-0 204

2012 stats:

103 carries for 679 yards 6.6 11 TD, 41 receptions for 425 yards 8 TD

Grice averages a touchdown per 7.57 touches!!! That's simply incredible.

Skills:

Grice is dynamic in the open field with great vision and lateral agility. He has a 4.4ish type speed and will lower his shoulder to get tough yards. With 41 receptions(2nd on the team), he adds a lot of potential FF value being a 3 down RB.

The most amazing thing about Marion Grice's 2012 is he entered a very established and crowded backfield. Cameron Marshall was the veteran RB for 2012. In 2010, he rushed for 787 yards(5.2) with 9 touchdowns; in 2011, he rushed for 1050 yards(4.6) with 18 touchdowns. DJ Foster was 4 star recruit that came to ASU with big expectations.

Here is the 2012 breakdown between the 3:

Cameron Marshall 135 carries for 583 yards 4.3 with 9 TD, 13 receptions for 99 yards 1 TD

DJ Foster 102 carries for 493 yards 4.8 with 2 TD, 38 receptions for 533 yards 4 TD

Marion Grice 103 carries for 679 yards 6.6 11 TD, 41 receptions for 425 yards 8 TD

So how could a great prospect like Marion Grice be under the radar? He's a JUCO transfer(just like Cordarrelle Patterson).

-He was committed to Texas A&M, but then switched to Arizona State

Why should we expect better results from Marion Grice?

-He joined ASU in late summer of 2012, so this will be his first exposure to an offseason training program. He never really lifted weights(up 10 pounds from last season). Scary he was that good with very little training.

Other information if you're interested:

Quotes from his RB coach:

-"His potential is through the roof," said ASU running backs coach Bo Graham of senior Marion Grice. "His potential is going to be much more than it was last year."

-"You can't underestimate a full year of development," Graham said. "Coming through the junior college ranks, he never really went through an offseason. Then he joined us late in the summertime and was really thrown into the fire. He never had an offseason training regimen. He's had that, and you can see in his body the change. When he breaks away on some of the long runs this spring, you see an extra gear."

Good article on him:

ICYMI Cards OC Harold Goodwin said RB Marion Grice received some first team reps on Wednesday. He could be used similar to Ellington. #ASU
First team reps? So I guess that means we could even see him this week in relief spelling Ellington? Wow.
It makes complete sense to me.

Ellington is 12th in the NFL with 81 carries through Week 6, but he's 64th in yards per carry, at just 3.77. That's not what we envisioned for this season. Ellington is seventh among all running backs with 188 yards receiving. A big chunk of that obviously comes from his 81-yard touchdown in Week 5. His 19 receptions is good for ninth in the NFL among running backs.

That's not terrible at all.

In fact, here is what his season projections look like.

Rushing: 260 carries 976 yards rushing 3.8 ypc 3 TDs

Receiving: 61 catches 601 yards receiving 9.8 ypc 3TDs

That is nearly 1600 yards from scrimmage. Everyone is good with that, right?

You have to look at this stat, which Seth Cox noted Wednesday.

In the history of the NFL, 425 players have received 259 carries or more in a season, and only 21 players have NOT gone over 1,000 yards. Andre Ellington is on pace to be number 22.
So what is the issue?

The reality is setting in that the Cardinals need a one-two duo of backs.

Look at his production last Sunday:

Quarter 1: Five carries for 39 yards (7.8 YPC)

Quarter 2: Two carries for zero yards

Quarter 3: Four carries for 14 yards (3.5 YPC)

Quarter 4: Eight carries for 14 yards (1.8 YPC)

On the season, he averages 4.4 yards per carry in the first half. It drops to 3.3 yards per carry in the second half.

He averages 4.2 yards per carry on the first 10 carries he gets in a game this season. On carries 11-20 in a game, the average per carry drops to 3.0.

The problem is he wears out by the end of the game.
Ellington absolutely needs to be spelled. Between his ineffectiveness on increased touches this year and his injury history, it makes a lot of sense to get Grice involved.

The Chargers also had Oliver at the time and must have made a call based on what they had seen, now we know that was no disrespect to Grice.

He isn't. You guys do know Ellington didnt practice Wednesday and someone had to take first team reps. This is an indictment on Taylor and shows Grice has more of a shot in relief. I doubt he is any threat to Ellington.

The people who should be upset with this news are the Chargers. They should not have put him on their practice squad he needed to be on active roster over Brown.

I wonder if more teams loaded the box with Stanton and Thomas in there? This OLine is not the best. But I guess some always need something to panic about.

Bruce Arians On if RB Marion Grice will get some playing time at running back: “Marion will slide up the depth chart. Robert Hughes could get some time depending on what the situation is and what package, but, yeah, Marion will be the next guy up.”

Scooped him up in a dynasty and hoping he can show something this week. Can he be the next Brandon Oliver in waiting?

Not sure. I'm curious to see how well he does in relief of Ellington though. Whether it be because of the foot injury or the way ARI has decided to utilize him, Ellington has been the least efficient RB on the ground through October and obviously one of the least efficient on the season. I'd like to see what Grice does with some of those same touches.
