I could really use some WR help in my league. Mark Clayton was apparently ready to come back at the start of the season, but the Rams decided to put him on the PUP while they sorted out their WR mess. They had a fairly large crop of WRs to sort through and cut. Now it looks like they could really use what he brought to them last year.

He had a Patellar Tendon tear and went through reconstructive knee surgery. I know an ACL is a 2 year recovery time and most players are worthless unless they are extremely dedicated to their rehab (Wes Welker is an example). Can a player come back and function normally after just 1 year?

A Patellar Tendon tear and ACL are two different injuries. Someone can correct me, but I believe a PTT is a lot worse than an ACL.

It is worse in terms of being able to function before surgery, but it is a much less damaging surgery and therefore less recovery.

Are you sure about that?

I heard that he can't return until week 8? If the Rams don't get their OL shored up it won't matter as nobody on that roster will be relevant. Not sure why they haven't made an offer to Terrel Owens?

Would be great to have Jene Bramel weigh in on this.

Because Owens tore his ACL earlier this year.

There may be some extenuating circumstances I am unaware of, but the PUP list, it's always after week 6. STL does not have a week 7 bye, so assuming he is kept on the roster, should be ready to go for Dallas game.

Somebody is going to emerge in STL down the stretch and I'm betting that it's either going to be Clayton or D.Alexender or a combo of both.

Take a look at Clayton's numbers with Bradford when they were on the field together last season. They were good enough for Clyaton to be considered a quality #2 wr. Maybe it was lightning in a bottle, but it's worth a stash on your bench or ir if you have the room.

The Rams schedule gets a lot easier in a few weeks and it will show in the passing numbers.

ps: Look out for Alexender down the stretch if he can stay healthy

IIRC, a played on the PUP has to come off the PUP list after Week 6 . . . but the team does not have to decide what to do with him until game time on Week 9. At that point, they have to either roster him, put him on IR, or release him. A team basically has two weeks to evaluate and figure out what they want to do with their PUP players.

A team could choose to activate someone right away and have them play in Week 7 . . . or Week 8 . . . or Week 9. That pretty much covers the options.

Just noticed a report on Rotowrold that claims Danny Amendola will miss the rest of the year. All the more resaon for Clayton to come back and contribute.

i am going to stash him. i was impressive enough last year to consider him this year. Bradford will make him viable, if he is healthy.

I'm just a medical student here, but a patellar tendon rupture is a pretty severe injury--much worse than a typical ACL/MCL or ACL/LCL injuries that you see. The major reason is the actual reattachment of the ligament (which it technically is) to the bone. It serves as an anchor to essentially allow one to transfer/absorb forces from your leg to your thigh as well as the use of your quads to extend your leg (so think jumping ie jumper's knee in bball players or kicking out in a sprint). A few years ago, Cadillac Williams had a similar injury and came back for Tampa Bay. He played quite well at the end of his first year post injury and better during his second. But, most will attest, he is probably 3/4 the player he once was.

Now I'm not sure if Clayton's injury was only a partial rupture or complete and if he required surgery.

Actually, I went at looked up some stuff on Caddy. Apparently, he tore both his R and L patellar tendons and he has come back pretty strong. While he only played in 6 games the following season after his first patellar tendon rupture, he did manage to average about 3.7 ypc on 63 carries. In previous years, he had averaged 4.1, 3.5, and 3.9 respectively. After Caddy's second patellar tendon rupture, he came back to with ypc in subsequent years of 3.9 and last year used sparingly with the Bucs he hit ypcs of 3.5. Not bad.

Clayton could be alright after this season after all.

That's my two cents.
