Marques Colston targets the past two years:

NFC south:70 (11 games) 70/11=6.36 targets per game

Rest of the NFL:167(21 games) 167/21=7.95 targets per game

Colston stats:

NFC South:50 catches 538yards 2 tds 10.76 ypc

Rest of NFL:104 Catches 1558 yards 14 tds 14.9ypc

Thoughts?

They have seen him more often in the NFC South, maybe know how to play him?

I'm sure if you do this for a lot of players in their division, I'm sure some others have a drop off as well.

Interesting clip of info...first reaction was that over the past two years, they have faced the Panthers (brutal in 2010) and the Bucs (brutal in 2009) twice. Over that time, they were 8-4 in the division and three of losses came in weeks 16 & 17, when they already had their playoff position locked up. My guess is that they just do not need him a ton when facing divisional opponents.

i don't think it is so much this as it is they know how to play brees. they want to take away one of his favorite weapons.

I didn't go back and check that these figures are accurate, however...Average game with NFC South opponent - 4.5 catches, 49 yards, .2 TDAverage game with rest of NFL opponent - 5.0 catches, 74 yards, .67 TD Improvements of 11%, 51% and 235%. Also, extrapolate (is that the correct word?) his "rest of NFL opponent" average over a full 16 game season - 80 catches, 1,184 yards, 11 TDs (very similar to what Jennings, Calvin J., and Nicks did last year).

Yea, to be honest I'm not even sure what I took away from this info...so I went back and watched all his targets from last season and it seems all the South teams bracketed him and only gave him the underneath stuff. Which would make sense considering the extreme difference in YPC. Just thought it was interesting.I haven't really done this type of research on any other WRs in the league, but, at a quick glance it doesn't seem to be as much of a difference against in conference foes for the top guys . If anyone is willing to look up the splits and prove me wrong, be my guest.
