Marques Colston (1 Viewer)

I'm wondering if Colston is a nice buy low, but reading his profile here at FBG there seems to be a difference of oppinion:

Opinion (from The Upgrade/Downgrade/Waiver Report): Despite returning to the lineup and supplanting Robert Meachem, Devery Henderson, and Lance Moore for targets, Colston is clearly third in the Saints scheme on most passing plays. Jimmy Graham and Darren Sproles are the big-play options with enough versatility to bleed into Colston's old role. Colston is the WR3 in this offense and a low-end WR3 in fantasy football. We'd rather have Pierre Garcon's upside and possibly Steve Breaston if Colston remains this low on the Saints passing totem pole.

Week 5 at CAR - Marques Colston put all residual doubt about his collarbone to rest when, on his first catch, he absorbed a massive hit and showed no signs of favouring it. After that 21-yard catch, Colston came back and took a hit of similar force to help his quarterback out on third down. Colston was the most consistent wide receiver for the Saints by far, coming up with key catches throughout the game. Colston is the 1A target in this passing game behind Jimmy Graham, but if he continues to produce as he did against the Panthers, expect Brees to target him even more.

Which is right?

Great question. I would expect his production to increase week to week due to his health, getting back in rhythm with Brees and teams having to respect Graham for the beast he has become. I equate the NO receivers to the NE group and similar to the GB bunch, but not quite at that level of talent. There are a lot of mouths to feed and all of those QB's are good at spreading it around depending on what the D gives them. Colston is talented and could produce big numbers one week and mediocre the next, very difficult to predict IMO.

I love FBG but some times you just have to shake your head.

Who would you rather have on your team:

a) a 6'4" WR on a pass-happy, conference championship caliber team catching passes from Drew Brees, and who has recorded at least 70 recs, 1000 yds and 7 TDs in every season he has played in at least 11 games

b) a WR on a leading "Suck for Luck" contender catching passes from Curtis Painter, who dropped 15% of passes thrown to him by Peyton Manning last year (4th worst in the league)

c) a WR on another leading "Suck for Luck" contender catching passes from Matt Cassell, who has never caught more than 3 TDs in his career

Look, I'm all about the upside in FFL, and am always scouring for positive "opportunity".

But you really can't overthink things

Colston is the number1 target for Brees when he is healthy and open. Followed by Graham then Sproles then who ever is left open between Meach, Henderson and Moore. Any lack of production is because of coverage or he is not fully recovered yet.

Colston has been fully healthy in two games this year. In those games here's how things have shaken out, ordered by yardage:

Graham - 12/185/1Colston - 11/150/0Sproles - 12/115/0Henderson - 7/111/1Meachem - 9/108
On top of that, Colston has never been a WR3 his entire career. Sounds like a bunch of rubbish to me.

Colston is a solid (fantasy) WR2 with limited upside.

He has remaining games vs. TBB x 2, ATL x2, CAR, IND, STL and NYG

I'm a Colston owner who is slightly concerned.

Other than specific packages designed for Colston, he doesn't seem to get looked at on most passing plays. I agree with FBG, it seems like Graham is the first option and Sproles the second.

Then of course, you have Lance Moore, who also seems to be one of Brees' favorite toys, the fact that Colston has two wonky knees. If I'm a Colston owner I have to seriously think about selling.

By the way here are the updated numbers for the 3 games Colston has played fully. I left out the riff-raff this time.

Code:
            Recs Yards TDsGraham 19 309 1Colston 18 268 1Sproles 20 161 0

Update:

Recs Yards TDsColston 24 366 3Graham 25 363 3Sproles 26 180 1
Pretty clear Colston and Graham are 1a and 1b at this point.
