Marshall fire 1, My house-0 (1 Viewer)

So there is a fund set up for people to get some temporary assistance. Got like 50,000 donations and like 12 million bucks. For Food, travel, clothing etc. Figured I am going to be staying in a hotel for a while and already drove from Colorado to IL to MN to ND and back to Colorado and had to buy 4 new tires to boot, so I figured why not get some of that covered before we get our insurance settlement.

Filled out the application this morning and just got a call telling me somebody already claimed our address and got funds.

Some people really suck.

I assume they can track the money - or the organizer is scamming. Either way, F’d up all the way around.

Let us help you and your family directly.

Just seeing this now.  So sorry.  If there's anything I can do as a fellow Cheesehead, please let me know.  Some Spotted Cow, perhaps?  Or some Packers gear to wear while you watch them romp through the playoffs?

Just saw this. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. If there is a place to donate please let me know .... I missed it

And I'll hold my tongue about the scammer. I just came back from my time out for something similar

In a different century such scum would have been strung up next to any horse thiefs.  Or perhaps they would have been addressed as Granny Hawkins said the Redlegs were hoping to do to Josie Wales.  Heel and hide these scondrels to a barn door.

Now I understand the above does not comport with Constitutional due process, and some might argue it would violate the 8th Amendment, but my feelings are my feelings.  That's probably why we have laws, as a check on my feelings.

During a early episode of 1883, the main character gets his billfold stolen in town. They pummel the thief, string him up and hang in within minutes. That ought to do it.

What the ####?

The fund gave me a call again about 4pm and asked me to come in. They were pretty thorough in verifying my identity and address and now even ask you questions about what was on your form to make sure that the person who filled out the form is who actually gets the check.

They did then give me a check. Hopefully nobody else gets away with abusing this.

I ran into our neighbors from across the street there. They both just immediately gave me a huge hug. They had just finished a huge remodel on their house and had a party the weekend before Xmas to show it off.

Alright, there we go!  A little win for the good guy, let's string a few of these in a row now.  Rooting you on hard and glad you got to see your neighbors.  Steps in the right direction.

"I'm world famous because of FBGs"

Or was it "internet famous"? Jeez that's been like 15 years.

Glad to hear the funding is working out for you. But what a horrible ordeal to go through on top of it all.
Yeah we are all good. Wife's coworker set up a gofundme and before she even told us it had already raised a ton from her coworkers. This check from the boulder charity group was 5k. I was expecting like 500 bucks which when she handed me the check and I saw the amount i actually was like boom, exactly what I was hoping for and put it in my pocket. Felt really good about since I was more or less just mentally applying it to my tires.

I only realized it had an extra zero when I went to deposit early this morning via my phone. So I was pretty ecstatic.

Now we just need to find a place to live around here. And with the obvious increased demand that hasn't been easy so far. Places come available and then by the time I get a hold of somebody to schedule a showing they are like yeah sorry already have 5 approved applications.

You may already know this but I think Boulder country will give you money as well.

Boulder County can also help with housing.

Found a place to live! SIgned the lease tonight.

Picking up a new car saturday.

Pieces slowly getting put back together.
:pickle:

that's great news! from our experience, it was the period right after the fire of literally being homeless that was the most stressful of my life. we had places to stay, but all short term from friends. and our building management (apt building) was telling us crazy things as they were figuring everything out... oh, it'll be two weeks... oh, it'll be two years... I mean, two months... I mean... It made things impossible to plan for finding something short or long term.

nice!

Red Cross helped us out... we got a visa card pre-loaded with $80. basically a day's worth of meals.

Wow, missed this this until now. This is awful.  There was a tornado that came thru Dallas and just flattened a few houses.  I know someone affected by that and they are still not put back together 2 years later.  Insurance can be a real **** to work with when you'd expect them to just write you for the policy and move on.

I wouldn't think some of their tactics are even legal, let alone ethical.  I mean if my house was ash, I'd expect a check for the policy the next day.  How is this not the actual thing?

Remember the commercial where that happened?

We can't even get those jerks to send us a copy of our policy. They sent us a thing that says "sample" all over it. Told us it was "basically the same."

Apparently this is a common thing as we are seeing other people saying the same. Seems so nefarious.

"Unfortunately, due to the legal and company requirements regarding wording, font size, and document size we are only allowed to send what I have  already sent from the office."

Needless to say this just irritated the heck out of me and we are having a "certified copy" sent to us.

Sounds like I should scan and upload to Google Drive a copy of my policy......

Really glad to hear about the check and locking down a place to live.

how's your kid doing?
She doesn't know yet. Wednesday was her 5th birthday so she just had a birthday party at my sister's house and now we are doing another one tonight since I just arrived today.

We have accumulated a huge percentage of replacement stuff for her and once we move her back we will tell her. We just didn't want her to have to deal with uncertainty as well as loss.

Luckily her best friend from our court will be living about three blocks from us.

Sorry about this.  I know tornado peoeple had decent success with a private adjustor.  Might look into that for Colorado?

Just picked up a new car to replace the pile of rubble, well new to us at least.

My wife and I already drive the same model car. Now we drive the same model and color.

God I can't wait to swap them at the grocery store sometime.

Got internet installed today at new place. Cell phone service is terrible here. Need to install a signal booster. Anybody have any familiarity?

Also anybody really knowledgeable about insurance claims? We are trying to do the inventory and we have been hearing lots of different things. If anybody knows this topic well I would appreciate some help.

I had to deal with this in 2020 when my house flooded. Seems to me that the adjuster had a LOT of leeway in what he could include as far as inventory. It may be different in your case since there were so many homes destroyed/damaged at the same time (so the insurance companies may have set parameters), but I'll answer whatever questions I can.

If you'd rather do it by PM, feel free.

It's gonna depend on your policy.  We have the kind that if they total it out we get 66% of the dwelling as contents.

Not sure if he can specifically help with this, but I believe @matttyl is in the insurance industry.

Wapo story on the fire. I'm just selecting some quotes that I found interesting, but the entire article is an interesting read. The pictures of the devastation are hard to look at. The whole thing makes your heart ache for Para and everybody else in the area.

The Marshall Fire was Colorado’s most destructive ever in terms of property loss. It ruined nearly 1,100 residences in Boulder County, including 9 percent of the housing stock in Superior, a onetime mining town that had evolved into a suburb of 14,000. Residents of Sagamore remain stunned weeks later: High winds are common, and grass fires, too. But devastating blazes were disasters of California or mountain towns.

And most residents are finding that they are dramatically underinsured. Even policies that were updated to account for inflation or renovations did not keep up with construction prices that have skyrocketed amid supply chain snarls and a labor shortage. Local officials have said they will work with the state and charities to help ease the shortfalls.

But conversations with his insurance agent and builders suggest that he’ll have less than $500,000 to spend on a house that would cost more than $800,000 to construct.

Whatever the case, he said, his family wants to stay, even though rebuilding is likely to cost several hundred thousand dollars more than their insurance covers. The fire, he hopes, was a fluke. “I couldn’t imagine a better place for our young kids,” said Miller, who most days biked to work in a nearby suburb. “We’d almost like to re-create what we had before.”

That is mind blowing to me. Is that an under insured house or wrong policy or coverages or a bad insurer? To me that's time to get a lawyer involved.

Was finally feeling like a sense of normalcy had returned.

And then I completely shredded my ankle. Just had surgery Wednesday. Three metal plates installed. Was broken in three places. Ligaments torn. Just completely destroyed.

My favorite part was when the ER nurse is asking me questions. My ankle is in full view on the table. Foot pointing in an unnatural way and she asks me if I could put any weight on it.

Damn that sucks 2022 not your year.  Did you at least injure it doing something cool like throwing down a monster dunk?

Complete loss. Almost everything we own. Sheriff pounded on the door and made me leave. Barely loaded anything up. Wife texted me to tell me to get a couple boxes of photos and keepsakes. Grabbed some clothes, laptop, and my work computer.

Moved across the country to Colorado in June. Dont even know wheat to do now.

We saw our house on the news briefly. Just the fence was on fire. Needed to know for sure so I parked about 3 miles away and went on foot since hey had all the roads blocked. It was leveled and smoldering. Just brutal to see. Our whole court. We just had a party together in one neighbor's backyard like a month ago. Probably will never see some of them again.

I reek like smoke and man I feel like I was inhaling stogies.

Sucks.
I live an hour or so north of you....so sorry for your loss and those of others in the community....just brutal....natural reaction is to say " I can't imagine"....and I know that doesn't help, but I really can't and feel for you.....best wishes moving forward..

I was hiking. Which led to having to lay in the snow for a long time while they figured out how to get me.

Pretty cool moment though when basically every hiker that came upon me kept putting their jacket on me. I was like Joey in that one episode of friends where he wears all of Chandlers clothes. Just couldn't stop shivering. So they just kept piling them on me.

Did they put any underneath you to insulate you from the ground?

Para - sorry to hear about the house then the ankle. You seem to be holding up pretty well, considering. Here’s to better days ahead.

Almost one year update...

Finally submitted our contents inventory.

Foot is finally on track to be close to 100%. Had another surgery two weeks ago. Had to get second and third opinion. Was very frustrating. But I can tell my foot is finally laying flat on the ground instead of on the outside edge. Recovery is going very well. Happy to be done taking so many dumb medications. Hopefully I can actually drink beer again. Somewhere along the line it started tasting insanely bitter to me. This was probably a good thing.

I am in an art show coming up December 30th. I made a sculpture using the melted aluminum that I collected from my wifes car.

Looking for a job in Nevada. We are done with Colorado.

Sounds very good. Why are you done with Colorado? The snow and wind lose their appeal?

Just a lot of bad luck. For example...I currently can't sleep in my bedroom.

Our basement tested high for radon. So the landlord contracted out a radon mitigation company. When he went to install the fan in the attic, there was no power near the pipe. Builder never installed. So he couldn't test it. Electrician came out and installed an outlet right by it. Plugged it in. Well the damn fan is defective or not lined up right or something. Sounds like a diesel generator running right above us. Radon guy can't get out to replace or fix until like January 6th. Wish the electrician wouldn't have plugged it in. I can't climb up there to unplug because of my foot.

Radon is apparently super common here.
