Marshall = Possession receiver? (1 Viewer)

2 years now...I thought this guy after the 1st couple of weeks this season was finally emerging as a legitimate WR fantasy stud. After his suspension...he's been looking more like Keyshawn Johnson or Joe Jurivicious. Do we need to be patient with this guy in dynasty leagues as the TD explosion may still come or sell high? He's good for 7 catches and 80 yds. That gets me "goose eggs" in my scoring system where I need TD's (6 pts) and 100 yard games (3 pts). I've been starting him every week this season but now may look at my WR matchups week by week. I'll still start him against KC next week, but then I'll have to see the matchups.

it probably hasnt been a great ride for Marshall owners in non PPR leagues lately. You can find some good info in the thread on this 1st page called Can Marshall be the #1 Fantasy WR? I am a big marshall supporter so you will get a biased view from me. But being objective, yes, i am disappointed with the lack of TD's this year. However, i also think he could easily score 10-12td's in any given year.

Haven't started Marshall for 2 weeks now. Also got tired of no td's. I'm in a league with roster restrictions and we can only have 4 wr's. It's also a non-ppr league. Thank god I have Greg Jennings. I also have Lee Evans and Eddie Royal. Thinking about starting Royal over Marshall next week. I wanted to count on Marshall as Evans and Royal haven't exactly tore it up lately either. I still think the guy's capable of putting up 10-12 td's a year but it won't be this year. He's still a receiver you want to definitely hang onto in dynasty leagues. The guy's only been in the league a couple of years and I feel the best is yet to come for him.

The TDs will come - don't forget that Holt was a big high reception/low TD guys for his first few years. Unfortunately, having Royal on the other side helps prevention of double coverage, but also may take away some of the TD opportunities. And Sheffler gets some of those RZ looks, too.

this is the problem though. Royal isnt preventing double coverage and Scheffler hasnt been healthy enough that opposing coaches gameplan their Defenses to stop the Scheffler component. until teams start respecting Royal, Marshall will struggle. I guess teams would rather get beat by Royal than torched my Marshall.

In Marshall's defense, he has been covered by arguably the top 2 corners in the last 2 weeks.

I don't know if they're double covering Marshall or not but I doubt it since Royal is too good all by himself and the case could also be made that maybe they should double cover Royal who looks like the next Steve Smith. Denver is doing a good job of spreading it around to Marshall, Royal, Sheffler as well as a nice pass catching RB/FB/KR named Hillis. Denver has a lot of nice offensive weapons to choose from and since they don't have a defense, they have to score a lot of points to win and that means more than just a conservative offense where they run a lot and throw the red zone TD to Marshall. So Cutler isn't just locking onto Marshall anymore even though he's a great target.

I thought people stopped using scoring systems like those back in the late 90s. :tfp:
This dynasty league has been in existance since 1992. Scoring rules have never been changed and no one wants to change them because we like keeping the historical stats without asterisks (yeah, there's a bunch of baseball fans in our league as well). We have been forced to make a few small tweaks to our scoring systme because the website software being used now couldn't accomodate some of our rules and we didn't want to do anything manual anymore.

So long term outlook.....is Marshall going down the Keyshawn / JJ path of a WR or looking to go the way of TO/Moss/Boldin/Fitz/Wayne etc?

I've received alot of bigtime trade offers for him over the last 12 months....but have declided each of them... I've had him targeted to be my #1 dynasty WR going forward so I wasn't willing to part with him. Perhaps in my non-PPR scoring system he really isn't a #1 (or a top 5 fantasy WR in the future in terms of TD's) and I should trade him now while his value is so high before other owners catch on that he is just a possession receiver and not looking to be a TD machine (if that is truly the opinion of him)

I can't imagine very many players are attractive in that scoring system. When a guy like Brandon Marshall is equal in value to some schmuck like Brandon Lloyd it might be time to rethink things. I'd hold onto him in your format because he's just too talented to expect this every week, even though it's been a number of weeks now.

Do I know you???? Actually we changed our scoring from that system in 1994 and tweaked in 1995. We haven't changed since 1995 for the same reason.KC was the 1st team to defend Marshall and since then everyone has put guys all over him. Royal had a good game last time vs KC. Actually both did.

Yeah, I hate the scoring system, but really love the league. Its highly competitve 14 owner league with alot of experienced sharks. I like the challenge and the fact its 14 tight-knitted family members and close friends. No work acquaintances scattered around the country or friends of friends and such.

If you can identify my team name in the dynasty league, I will be truthful as to whether we are in the same league or not. In case there are other league members trolling on this board, I don't want to give away my alias prematurely.

I've only watched 3 Denver games this year and I've seen him drop 3 TD passes that hit him in the hands. He also had a 60yrd TD called back on a ticky-tack off pass interference call. He could easily have 2-4 more TD's right now. I think he's great, but he's gotta stop dropping passes that hit him in the hands, especially TD's.

Good info....thanks! That makes me feel his value is still high if he's being targeted for TD's and just dropping balls. If I knew that info...I would have compared him to Koren Robinson and not KJ or JJ!

He is reminding me a lot of Chris Chambers lately. He'll get a ton of targets but doesn't turn that into a high percentage of receptions. In his defense, the opposing defenses are keying on him and he did have a long TD in the second half but Cutler way underthrew him. I am not expecting much the next few weeks (50-80 yds and maybe a TD) in his future games. Not exactly what I was hoping for when I traded TO for him a few weeks ago. Maybe Scheffler emerging and getting healthy will help Marshall down the stretch.

I get the feeling that Marshall is just not mentally in the game right now. I think perhaps his lack of production has gotten to him a bit - he seems to be pressing too hard to make things happen, rather than just trusting his talent and the talent of those around him and realizing that if they just play their game good things will come. I think he needs a monster game to get out of this funk. I hope for his sake, Denver's sake, and his owners' sake, that monster game comes soon, because as a Marshall owner and a Denver fan, it is frustrating to watch this guy right now.
