Keep this loon away from sharp objects. From the day he was hired, Marinelli's approach has been one of intensity, but with patience, too. The only promise he makes is that the Detroit Lions will be a better team, more fundamentally sound, smarter and better conditioned. Martz, on the other hand, walks through the halls of the practice facility and -- this is true - says things like "Touchdown, Lions. Touchdown, Lions" and "Line 'em up and let's go for two (points)."
...As the season approaches, though, there are going to be more clashes between Marinelli and Martz...
Some of the best coaching staffs I've known (high school) really got after each other behind closed doors.Great article. Don't know why people see this as a bad thing since over the last couple years what we have heard out of the Lions organization is that players don't know the fundamentals, no one is teaching them to run routes correctly, lack discipline, etc. Both Marinelli and Martz are sticklers for these things, yeah they have different approaches but they are both going to bust some ### to ensure that players know what they are doing and work their tails off.

super competitive? let's just start with competitive. If I'm a Lions fan, I'm lovin' this. If these two guys can coexist, the Lions are going to become super competitive over the next two years. The difficulty appears to come from "timetable expectations", with Marinelli having patience to get the job done right and Martz having none - to get the job done right now!

Really? I'm no defender of Millen, but if the issue of Millen's questionable competence as GM is news to Martz, then he (Martz) a bigger idiot than I thought he was and he shouldn't have taken the job (only a couple of months ago) to begin with. Based upon what we've seen of Martz's ego with the Rams, I think this was a power play by a guy who - only a couple of months into a job as what amounts to a consultant - has far too little power within that organization to play that game. That's why he came crawling back.I just wanted to edit and add this is assuming the issue was between OC and HC. Now, if this was an instance of Martz banging on Millen for his lack of ability, then I give him a free pass.

I'm not sure that a two-headed monster arguing with itself is a good form of competition or the way to establish leadership in an organization that desperately needs it.If I'm a Lions fan, I'm lovin' this.
