Marv Levy standing with his Depends around his ankles (1 Viewer)

GRIDIRON ASSASSIN

Footballguy
Marv Levy is standing there in the public with his Depends around his ankles:

Darwin Walker was traded to the Bills from the Philadelphia Eagles along with a seventh-round draft choice in exchange for quarterback Kelly Holcomb and linebacker Takeo Spikes on March 25.

So Buffalo ends up with a low fifth rounder (from the Bears after today's trade) and a mid to low seventh rounder (from the Eagles) for Takeo Spikes and Kelly Holcomb.

In the words of Borat: Very nice!

TKO was breaking down and his not the game changing force he once was. This might be addition by subtraction just by getting out of paying his salary. POZ has looked very good in practices so far.

I would like to have gotten more for Spikes than Walker and a 7th. That was a bad trade IMO.

This trade is fine with me. I'd rather take the 5th rounder than overpay Darwin Walker. Obviously the Bears are in a different situation in that they're gearing up for another SB run while we're just rebuilding so it makes sense from their perspective as well.

(Kelly Holcolmb doesn't factor into this discussion for me. I doubt he would have made our roster this year anyway, making him merely a throw-in in the original trade with Philly).

Spikes is on the downside of his career and wont do anything this year. The LB's on our roster from the 6th round on are just as good as Spikes. Holcomb will be lucky to be a third string qb.

Marv is building this team the right way.

Spikes trade was primarily a salary dump. They don't think he'll be the same player after the Achilles injury. Walker could have helped the defense but probably wouldn't have made much of an impact on the run defense where they need the most help. I think it would have been a bigger mistake to give Walker the new contract he wanted with 2 years already remaining on his deal. The Bears clearly had a need at DT after the release of Tank Johnson.

What I don't understand is why the Bills would accept a 5th rounder from the Bears when they were already going to get a 5th rounder from the Eagles if Walker didn't report by August 5th. If it wasn't a 4th round pick or a 5th plus something else, this trade makes no sense.

all that being said, I'm very happy with Levy's past two drafts along with the coaching staff he's put together. His hits have outnumbered his misses thus far.

AR, it was a 6th from the Birds, not a 5th. The trade gives us a better pick.

I was skeptical of the original trade, but I am officially on board with Bills management. I think they are building an OUTSTANDING team, and they are doing it the right way; youth through good drafting, and bringing in guys that contribute to the TEAM philosophy.

I'm very happy, and I'm not going to sweat the small stuff. Better to move Walker for a 5th then create a distraction.

 You keep thinking that.....
You obviously don't watch football or even watched Spikes play the past two seasons and then watch Keith Ellison a sixth rounder play well last year, in our system, better then Spikes for a whole lot cheaper.

TKO is an old man with a bum wheel and is not a cover 2 LB.

the bills, at 21 mil under the cap, should have paid. but

since its a small market, they have a cash to the cap policy, meaning, are you ready for this..............they spend cash to the cap.

Ralph Wilson is the target here, not Marv. Every penny the bills will pay this season in player salaries comes from revenue sharing and Ralph will put every penny in his pocket from the gate, concessions, local TV deals, merchandise, etc

ok, my bad on that.I didn't like the original Spikes trade, but I'm fine with this one.
It was a SEVENTH rounder from the Iggles and a FIFTH rounder from the Bears. Reading is a skill, re-read my original post.http://www.buffalonews.com/258/story/129843.html
thanks. I already said "my bad".per the original Bills trade with the Eagles, if Walker didn't report to the Bills by August 5th, his rights would have been returned to the Eagles and the Bills would have received an additional draft pick as compensation. I mistakenly thought that was going to be a 5th round pick from the Eagles when I posted my original response. alg corrected me by reminding me it was going to be a 6th. So, Levy just upgraded a 6th from the Eagles to a 5th from the Bears with this trade. I don't think anyone connected to the Bills expected them to give Walker the contract he wanted, so him not reporting was considered a foregone conclusion.

Like I said, I'm fine with getting a 5th instead of a 6th for him. Not sure why anyone would argue that this trade with the Bears was a bad move by Levy. As for the original trade with the Eagles, that's a different story. I think they just wanted to dump his salary and move on. It's been a few years since he was a productive player and they didn't feel comfortable paying him big dollars. It's a young team and a young defense. The player replacing him in the lineup is basically Keith Ellison, who has been one of their best players in camp thus far. Either way, Spikes in Buffalo this year probably wasn't going to have a big impact. I think they'll probably miss Fletcher and Clements more than him.

Bills get a fifth and seventh for Walker, Holcomb, and Spikes?

The Walker trade isn't bad. He got rapped on the Spikes deal but that was obviously a salary cap dump.

Dumbest GM...I've got to nominate Carl Peterson, Vikings GM, and some others first. One bad trade doesn't make Levy the worst.

Since Walker was in the original deal, you can't count him against the Bills. They got a 5th and 7th for Holcomb and Spikes. And since they were probably going to cut Holcomb anyway, that's pretty much just a throw in. And like Rude said, moving Spikes was a salary dump anyway. It would have been nice to get a bit more for him, but Ellison will outplay him by a ton this season. In fact, assuming neither player has a season ending injury, I'll have a sig bet with anyone that wants to that Keith Ellison will have more tackles+INTs+Sacks than TKO.What I really don't get is how Bears' fans are crowing about their GM. So far this offseason the Bears have managed to downgrade their DTs, downgrade their depth at RB (and IMO, downgrade in general since TJ>Benson) and they STILL have one of the worst QB situations in the entire league. And yet Bears fans are acting as if they had a great offseason. Last year was the first year in quite some time that the Super Bowl loser made it back to the playoffs (and that was due to how awful the NFC West was). I think the Bears will make it back to the playoffs this year, but only because they have the 2nd easiest schedule in the league (after having the easiest last year).

:bye: Crowell, Poz, and Ellison will be a very under-rated LB corps.

You have no idea where these picks will end up. Not to mention that depending on what happens between now an draft day, they could be packaged in a trade for something better. The fact is, we just don't know. Why anyone wants to jump the gun and grade this trade without seeing how Spikes plays, and who the Bills end up getting with these draft picks makes no sense.

I remember the same nonsense when Sam Cowart was traded, that worked out pretty well.Could they have gotten more for Spike? Don't you think they would have taken better offers? Bottom line is, around the league, most people realize Spikes is not the same player he was.

I loved Spikes' attitude and talent when the Bills first acquired him. After being so banged up the last 2 years and being on the wrong side of 30 it's hard to rank him as an elite player, especially considering how quickly players decline in this league. Still, he was a bright spot on some mediocre Buffalo teams in 03 and 04 and I'll be rooting for him to bounce back.

Of course he doesn't. That's why he comes to footballguys.com. Because he never watches football. :D

The compensation from Philly was no longer in the equation because according to PFT (I know, I know... :goodposting: ):

WALKER REPORTED BEFORE TRADE

Bears defensive tackle Darwin Walker, acquired earlier on Sunday in a trade with the Bills, reported to the Buffalo camp on Saturday, a day before being shipped to Chicago.

We wrote earlier that Walker's rights would revert from Buffalo to Philly if a long-term deal were not worked out by August 5. We were incorrect -- Walker's rights would have gone back to the Eagles if Walker had not reported by August 5.

Since Walker reported to the Bills before the trade, that issue is now dead.

Walker also has reported to the Bears, and is expected to practice on Monday. A long-term deal is being negotiated between the player and the team.

This raises an interesting question, who got less in their respective trade:

- Buffalo for Takeo Spikes, or

- Chicago for Thomas Jones?

I don't think that either one was a great deal. But Thomas Jones was 11th in the league in rushing last year and Spikes was a mediocre LBer last year. So TJ essentially finished in the top third at his position. Does anyone believe that TKO finished in the top 3rd of LBers last season?

If the Bills have 'so much money under the cap'. Then why didn't they throw Walker a bone (as Jerry Angelo did) and see how he does this season?
