Marvel Cinematic Universe - Fantastic Four - No Homework Required (2 Viewers)

I'm binging on the Marvel offerings on Netflix right now and very much into Daredevil.  I will finish S2 today - really, really good.  Kingpin, Punisher, Elektra are all perfectly cast and I really like all of them.

I have to ask though - in 1v1 combat, who wins: Daredevil or Hawkeye?

Not saying DD is more suited to being an Avenger as Hawkeye brings a different skill set, but by my analysis, DD has some enhanced abilities; Hawkeye does not.

Daredevil is going to take this 97 times out of 100

How about Black Widow?

I'm thinking BW can take DD, because DD got his ### handed to him a couple of times, and BW is pretty much a badass.  But she and Hawkeye went toe to toe, several times so...

Glad to see I'm not alone in not caring much for Spider Man NWH.

The pacing was just way off. Scenes are given no chance to breathe and as a result the movie almost never develops any momentum. And the action was just messy.

In the comics it was presented as a coin flip.  Depends on who was writing.  I should perhaps reevaluate my chances of Hawkeye vs DD.  I remember one comic specifically where it was pointed out that Hawkeye was an underrated hand-to-hand combatant because he trained so much with Captain America.

Finally saw Eternals, and I didn’t hate it. I think it actually suffered by being tied in to the Marvel universe. People expect so much from Marvel movies now, and I can see why a lot of people were probably underwhelmed. I think it would have been better received as a one off story without any Marvel tie in. There was zero value in them mentioning the Avengers, etc.

They are planning to bring it into the overall fold at some point and interact with the other Marvel characters, so they were probably setting that stage.

Honestly, based on the trailers and the reviews, if it wasn't a Marvel movie I would not have watched it.

Eternals was deeply flawed. Lots of telling not much showing.  The super powered characters weren't all that powerful.  I couldn't keep track of who was who or what their powers were because they did a poor job developing it. Jolie can make a laser sword. Another guy has a laser fist. Also laser shields and super speed. And laser eyes and flying. And just run fast.  Also make a bunch of copies of myself but maybe pretend to be someone else.  And change things to water/ trees/ stone/ mortal child. What the ####.  I needed a whole movie to find out Tony Stark had an iron man costume and i get a cluster #### of confusing scenes about characters I've never heard of to learn everything i need to know about them.  No wonder I'm confused.

And then there's the uber bad guy good guy neutral guy whatever he has a lego face and he keeps the plan secret until they become emotionally invested in the people and then doesn't help just lets it play out while they get emotional about the people but maybe they're in big trouble or not

So anyways they solve the thing or maybe they don't to be continued.

This is like guardians of the galaxy with less charismatic actors and less fun.  I didn't care about anyone at all.  It never bothered me when a character was in danger.  I think i was supposed to root for the pretty lady because she was pretty?  I know I'm supposed to root for everyone on earth to not die but it's kind of boring after thanos. Oh it might happen again but even worse.  Ok i guess.

And then there's the bad guys.  Who were the bad guys?   During the movie i thought it was these things or that thing or that guy or the other guy or the guy who was helping the other guy kill everyone or maybe the guy who helped the guy who helped the other guy or the good guys who wanted to stop the guy or the guy who was trying to kill the good guys but actually was trying to kill the bad guys and really he just hates all the guys but the good guys need the good girl who was the bad girl but saved them from the bad guy but none of that mattered because it was really all about the ability to turn things into water or trees or rock or whatever unless she gets stabbed but don't worry she can just shake it off by turning the knife to water and then give her murderer the greatest gift she could ever ask for and why not

It was not a good movie. It had some enjoyable moments but it was just poorly executed.  If you liked it then congratulations i just couldn't turn it off during this one

In the same boat as most with the Eternals. It wasn't awful....but I wouldn't watch it again.  Story was meh....I thought the fight scenes were decent....none of the characters seemed all that interesting.

Just so hard for me (as a non-comic book guy) to care about these C level characters that weren't part of the Infinity saga. I know that the next few movies are gonna flesh out Kang, the multi-verse, etc.....but everything just seem like a letdown after Thanos.

Disclaimer....haven't seen Spiderman yet.

MoonKnight trailer looks pretty awesome. I like Isaac a lot and it looks intense. Seems like the limited series is the sweet spot for these character that nobody knows about.

Just read up on Moon Knight.

Looks like his psychological makeup is key and probably why the MCU is bringing him in.  Seems interesting and culturally relevant with our current views on mental health.

On a side note, I re-watched Guardians of the Galaxy 1 last night.  Noticed that when the collector was describing the infinity stones, they showed a scene with a being that looked exactly like the Celestial, Arishem, wielding an infinity stone and battling some planet with it. https://thedirect.s3.amazonaws.com/media/photos/celestialsgotg.jpg

Moon Knight looks awesome. I had the comics as a kid, but I can't remember much of his canon. I remember them being dark and gritty, like a lot of comics in the mid-80s. Looking forward to this.

Good write up.  This brings to light a lot of what I was feeling about this movie but just couldn't articulate.

I wasn't sure why, but I just didn't like it.  Having watched how awesome the character development was in GotG last night makes it stand out even more.

I literally watched it last night and i can only remember a few characters

Icarus

Sprite

Thena

Tiamat

Something that begins with an A

Something else that begins with an A

Jon Snow

Technology guy

Punchy

Indian

Fast woman

Fast man (not sure if i already listed him)

People who make yellow things come out of their hands

Guy that got shot in the chest with lasers and buried but didn't die

Those things that looks like a mimic from that Tom Cruise movie

The one that got super strong and turned into a dude for some reason

Brick face giant

The guys in the credit scenes had more personality than anyone else in the movie and i didn't really like either of them tbh

I didnt think Eternals was THAT bad. The two after credit scenes were the best part though.
Yes - they were the only reason I was glad I watched to be honest - at least I feel like this now fits into the MCU. I really don't care to see any of the Eternals show up again.

and Dinesh, who sucked without Guilfoyle.

I thought it was Nick Fury's voice asking Dane Whitman if "he was sure he was ready for this" offscreen but just read it was Mahershala Ali's, the actor who will play Blade in the MCU, voice.

Wow, Eternals was a steaming pile of poo. I didn’t like Shang Chi as much as the reviews but it was still really good in some parts and way better than Eternals. This was just awful. It was easily on par with the first Hulk movie. Not so sure about the brother in the end credits but I like Jon Snow’s and he and Dinesh’s assistant were the only redeemable things in the movie. I hate to say that Angelina Jolie and the guy from Dr. Strange were the only Eternals who appeared to have any acting chops. Dinesh was funny at times but was that whole dance seem to show off that he’s buffed up after Silicon Valley? The rest were just wooden, boring characters. Chao shouldn’t be let near another Marvel movie again, she couldn’t have made (directed and wrote screenplay) a worse Marvel movie.

I can't look at Dinesh without thinking of the massage scene in "Dave and Mike need wedding dates". Pretty stupid movie but there were a few funny parts. The massage scene was one of them.

Wait, the guy with the power hand was the guy who is now Sorcerer Supreme in Dr Strange

Hah, no but they look a lot alike and while I watched yesterday, I couldn’t tell you anyone’s name except the ones like Athena without the A and Icarus where those are well known names. I just decided to call him that knowing people would know exactly who I meant. I didn’t realize he was in Train to Busan, a much better movie than Eternals.

I liked Eternals overall. Not perfect by any means and there could have been a lot more character development and insight into their time on earth. But not terrible.

Two questions though:  what was the point of the Deviants coming back at the time of the emergence, or having the new ability to absorb powers, or why were they now targeting Eternals?

Second, why were the Eternals still there after all deviants were defeated 1,000 years ago or whatever?  Because they were helping advance civilization without taking sides in wars?  Like why were they still there at all?

Marvel has a problem having delivered such a big payoff with Endgame.

With both Rings and Eternals they are introducing world destroying threats again and jamming this into a story where they also have to establish characters.

In the end we are left with characters we don’t know enough about to care, and a threat that is a yawner because it is introduced and resolved over the course of one movie.

In the Eternals the threat should have been the Deviants and how they were not all killed off. Hell there are even jokes to be had there, “the Avengers get America’s ### out of the ice and we get this”

They could have fleshed out more of the characters and shown their time on Earth, there are a lot of cool scenes that could have been done.

The cliff hanger could be hints about their true purpose on Earth and the emergence could be Eternals 2.

Marvel needs to resume their plan of a slow burn up to an epic conclusion and not try to jam it all into one movie.

Also, the Eternals should have totally intervened in Infinity War as wiping out half the population in the universe is a huge problem for the Celestials plans.

I just watched Encanto and they did in a 4 minute song what Eternals didn’t do in 2 plus hours. Encanto introduced everyone and what their powers were. Could have gone a long way for Eternals.

Marvel's problem is it needs to split the brand in half.

The formula still works for the most part - Fan service while sticking to movies that families can watch together.

But the entry point movies like the first Blade and the first Iron Man aren't likely to be the kind of scripts and storylines that today's Marvel would green light.

You need Marvel films that carry a hard edge to them. Like the Blade reboot. Or Punisher. Films that can't have the fan service/out of reality jokes that you get in Thor Ragnarok.

Imagine Agents Of Shield without the fake wannabe West Wing/Rom Com style schlock. Convert it to Sicario but with super heroes. The further you get from the more iconic characters like Captain America, the more you need name brand actors in ensembles and the more you need more aggressive storylines.

Jeff Goldblum in Thor Raganarok works. He's playing Jeff Goldblum. He's good at playing the kind of Jeff Goldblum that fans have always seen and expected. You don't need to give him a ton of screen time to sell his one trick pony. That's what Eternals needed. And if you have Jolie in a movie, use her like she was used in Mr and Mrs Smith. She fits as a "bad person" with conflict. Eternals should have been developed like Cinemax's Banshee.

Overpowered good guys are hard to create a compelling story for and make an audience care about them. There's a reason the Avengers films had to find ways to basically neuter Hulk, Thor and Scarlett Witch because they were so naturally overwhelming.

I feel bad for child actors sometimes

I get that they're not always seeing the final version but the keep kicking him scene was hard to watch

The local movie theater has a soft opening this week so my son and I will probably go see the new Spiderman this week. Tickets are only $10/each (marked as "training tickets" on their website) compared to $15-$17 after the grand opening.

FYI: Netflix is dropping their Marvel titles effective March 1: Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Defenders, Punisher.  If you are currently watching these, better wrap it up.

in Chronological order (shows I have watched in bold).  So, basically I have 2 weeks to make it thru 6 seasons.

  1. Daredevil (Season 1)
  2. Jessica Jones (Season 1)
  3. Daredevil (Season 2)
  4. Luke Cage (Season 1)
  5. Iron Fist (Season 1) <-- this is where I am right now, plus Punisher
  6. The Defenders (Limited Series)
  7. The Punisher (Season 1)
  8. Jessica Jones (Season 2)
  9. Luke Cage (Season 2)
  10. Iron Fist (Season 2)
  11. Daredevil (Season 3)
  12. The Punisher (Season 2)
  13. Jessica Jones (Season 3)

Do yourself a favor and stop watching Iron Fist for a bit and watch Punisher 1 and 2. I enjoyed Jessica Jones season 1 and didn’t watch Daredevil although it sounds like I should, but both Punisher seasons were way better than Luke Cage, Iron Fist and JJ season 2+. I never finished any of those and I’ve rewatched both Punisher seasons.
