I know we have discussed this endlessly in here but there’s something wrong with the fact that these shootings are so common in the United States and in no other country. Is there really nothing we can do about this?

I guess that means that a new thread will have to be started for every future mass shooting.

Reports are that there were 13 people injured, 10 of the shot at the 36 Street train station in Sunset Park Brooklyn, NY today morning by a man in a gas mask who threw a smoke grenade in the subway car.

America loves violence - rap music, movies, video games. We have a judicial system that is weak, a revolving door for criminals.

NY City has very very strong gun laws ... how'd that work?

What can we do about it? many states have concealed carry laws, at least people can choose to protect themselves. Me? I'd make the punishments far far worse for violence like this. It wouldn't stop them - but it might have some positive impacts (human nature weighs risk/reward)

We live in a free country. part of that freedom is personal responsibility with each citizen to not drive drunk, don't beat someone up, don't murder people etc. Media glorifies it when it happens :(

Gee...I wonder if Tim was hinting at gun control? Anyone wanna chime in?
The usual suspects get threads shut down, complain and then start similar threads.  I wonder how this will go.  And why start a thread on this one when there are shootings all over the US every day?  Hell, I'm surprised when it's not the first story on the nightly news lately.

When a guy boards a fully loaded train, throws in a smoke bomb and starts shooting people should fail to get our attention you know we are doomed.

I would be terrified to ride on a train in NY knowing there is a lunatic out there trying to kill people.

media driven

if there is a needed shift in news - then toss in a story of multiple people being shot, a child, a white person shooting a black person etc

ignore pretty much everything else because there isn't a shock factor, can't tug at audiences or play to agenda's is they publish articles on just regular people being killed

Something DOES need done with violence and I'm all for discussing it. But the narrative HAS to change from blaming an inanimate object to identifying the people doing these things and why.

If we do that - the choice of weapons won't matter

Well this one happened in NYC so of course it deserves it's own thread. But the ones that happened in Iowa, in Indiana, in Texas, in Florida, no need to bring those up. Because big bad liberal NYC with its scary subways. Thanks for throwing the chum in the water. We get it, NYC is the worst.

What appears to be eight gunshots ring out as passengers in a nearby subway car hurry to exit a train in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, this morning.

Btw I love the mention of how much America love violence like rap, movies and video games yet completely leaves out Guns, a literal tool created only for violence, and our obsession with them.  The irony of that is beyond reproach

All of which are common across the globe.  Wonder what's different here.

We just had a mass shooting in Sacramento what last week?  Barely heard anything about it anymore

Wasn't white supremacists

What do you suggest?

much harsher penalties - as much as I value human life, if people want to forfeit theirs by doing heinous crimes so be it. Hold parole boards and judges accountable for allowing violent criminals back on the streets would stop that nonsense fast. the revolving door for criminals has to stop

https://www.brookings.edu/opinions/the-numbers-dont-lie-its-the-hard-core-doing-hard-time/

These people are simply evil - lock them up for less than murder crimes, execute for murder. I know that sounds harsh - but they're making the choice, not me. We simply cannot have these violent, evil people in society.

That'll help. Sometimes, its not already criminals who commit violent crimes. Sometimes, its mental issues and hotlines and making calls to alert authorities etc we need more of. I know that'll take resources but if solutions can be found, there is one there IMO.

I know what will not have an impact - and that's banning a certain type of gun because of the way it looks or "ghost" guns etc. That's political vomit that is for point making only and addresses nothing and I'm surprised anyone buy's it anymore

To be fair....most here in Florida is covered under poorly constructed "self defense" and/or "stand your ground" laws...perfectly legal here.  If the guy walking after shooting a dude in the movie theater for throwing popcorn at him didn't tell you that, nothing will.  It's pathetic.

We claim we want stricter laws in one breath and throw full throated support behind the NRA (fighting those stricter laws) in the next.  It's a joke.

This is what I want:

1. All gun sales or transfers to require a background check. NO exceptions.

2. A ban on all sales of AR-15s and assault rifles. There’s nothing we can do about the ones already out there but let’s make it illegal to purchase new ones or sell the ones you have. Please don’t ask me to define what an assault rifle is. If it looks like one it is one.

3. Full registration of all firearms privately owned in this country. A list that any police officer can look at, on their phone, throughout the nation, that tells us who the owner of the gun is.

I think these ideas will reduce gun crime. I hope that is the case. Please don’t bother discussing local or state laws; these restrictions will only work if they are federal. Please don’t bother discussing the 2nd Amendment because none of these ideas violate the 2nd Amendment.

I know I will probably not getting any of these things to happen: it’s a losing struggle. But many of us will keep fighting for it.

So you favor allowing doctors to take away someone's right to bear arms? What about due process?

ETA: what about red flag laws?

This is ridiculous.

Curious how you fight for it? Making posts on a message board?

I marched with my daughter after Stoneman. I have given money to organizations who fight for these things and I vote for and support politicians who agree with me.

There’s not much else I can do. It’s very frustrating and I feel pretty helpless.

We’ve reached the point of the thread where it becomes about the OP , rinse & repeat. A tale as old as time.

Guy shoots up a train with a glock and here comes the ban assault rifles solution.  I mean at least start with an argument that doesn't make you look like a complete fool.

Calling people names is never a good look. Of course not all of my solutions apply to this particular incident; perhaps none of them do. This incident is an opportunity to discuss mass shootings and gun violence in general, and I have offered some ideas on how to reduce these in general. Feel free to discuss. Surely you’re as sick of all these shootings as I am? How long are we going to simply do nothing about them? How long before we at least try?

Violent crime, at least until the last year or two (I don't know the very recent stats) is significantly below where it was in the 1960's and 1970's.  It has been trending down for decades.  You hear about more of it now due to the 24/7 news cycle but when you actually look at the data the issue is being overblown.  When you remove illegal immigrant and terrorist violence it is even less.  Your case is not compelling to anyone who actually looks at data.

Great concept.  You've called me a stalker three times week.  Apology accepted
