Mathews On Short Leash (1 Viewer)

Per Roto:

Chargers coach Norv Turner said Ryan Mathews (neck) hasn't improved enough to the point where he can practice, and added "missing a Wednesday and Thursday sets a player back."

Norv's Translation: "I have an excuse to turn this into a full blown RBBC."

Demmit! I think you're right. Laughing, but not laughing as a suffering Mathews owner.Suppose Mathews is ruled out for the Broncos game. Predict Jackie Battle's usage and stats.

very small. problem is, ronnie brown has been the best back on their roster this season, and, dare i say it...electric. rbbc with 65% ronnie brown i'd guess.

Thanks. You're probably right.Wow, I'm even thinking of trading Ryan Mathews for Shonn Greene. Can you believe it?

eh, that's a stretch, unless you are desperate for wins the next couple weeks. greene's upside is so limited...i think your better bet would be to hold and pray that mathews picks it up in a few weeks.

I'm so disgusted with Mathews. I'm probably violating a rule: Never make a trade when you're disgusted with a player.

Damn....I was going to drop Ronnie Brown to pick up a good playoff defense. Now I have to hold onto him for a bit longer. Hope nobody grabs Miami off the WW.

I wouldnt do mendy either. I know people are down on mathews but in ppr when healthy hes a good bet for double digits with upside. There arent a lot of rbs out there now you can say that about.

As a mathews owner in a start 2 qb ppr league. Offered mcgahee And Flacco for Mathews and freeman. Neither qb would start for me but either rb would be my rb2. Thoughts?

Best back on their roster? If you mean best 3rd down back, sure, he's done pretty damn good as a receiver out of the backfield. However he's not even close to Mathews' production point wise, and that's with him missing the first 2 games and then being eased back in for the next couple. Brown's highest rushing total of the year is 38, and although his YPC have been good on minimal carries, that's mainly on 3rd down with defenses dropped pack in coverage.I had the choice off waivers of either Brown or Battle, and chose Battle for now. Going back to when Mathews was inactive, Brown go the first shot at featured and looked terrible in that role---hence the reason Battle got the nod. I personally would expect Battle to take bake over at starter and Brown to continue his current role.

Probably won't be trading Mathews. Will roll the dice tomorrow and expect to read that Mathews has a "questionable" tag and it will be a true game-time decision. Which means if he plays, it'll be a RBBC. Lovely.

Mathews has gotten me about 13 points a game PPR. Shonn Greene averages about a 11 points. And Mendenhall? Who knows what's happening to the Pitt backfield.

Mathews and Turner have been a headache this season.

Honestly, if you have held on to Mathews all season, it would be dumb to trade him now. The time to trade him was six weeks ago when his value was higher. Now, might as well hope your team has been good enough aside from him to stay in contention and that he can finish nicely and help you win.

The Matthews owners drafted him 1.04 if thedraft was before the preseason injury. Brown was snagged by everyone off waiver wire. Hilarious to see the Matthews owners defending this turd given how much Battle and Brown have made Matthews the 2nd worst 1st round pick after CJ.Remember when this wad the year Matthews was going to be the uber stud now that Tolbert was gone? :lmao:
You're the last guy who should be dogging anyone.

Sigh. You're probably right. I'm tempted to trade him for Shonn Greene or Rashard Mendenhall (if their owners ever responded), but I might as well hang on. Will go after Battle given that Ronnie Brown's on another owner's roster.

Ryan Mathews (neck) returned to Friday's practice after missing Wednesday and Thursday's sessions.

Mathews missed the two sessions with neck "stiffness." Coach Norv Turner suggested Mathews missing so much install time might affect his snaps against Denver, but we shall see. Mathews' role actually increased a bit in Week 10 against the Bucs. He received four of the five red-zone carries in San Diego's backfield, and also stayed in during the two-minute drill, instead of Ronnie Brown. Nov 16 - 2:47 PM

Does this make Jackie Battle or Ronnie Brown a more interesting and immediate pickup? Would think Battle is the better pickup if Mathews is limited for just one week, Brown a better longer term pickup (esp in PPR) in case Mathews stiffness lingers.

 he practiced today

Mathews gets 20+ touches against the Broncos. Bank on it. It's the only way to keep the Bronco pass rushers from teeing off on Rivers, especially since LT Jared Gaither is out.

per RotoWorld:

Ryan Mathews - RB - Chargers

Ryan Mathews (neck) is listed as questionable for Week 11 after returning to a limited practice Friday.

The limited Friday practice was Mathews' only participation of the week. "I was encouraged by watching him run around," coach Norv Turner said after the workout. "He feels a lot better and moved a lot better." Mathews is still going to be a game-time decision for Sunday's 4:25PM ET game at Denver. The Chargers will hope his neck feels better Saturday, and decide Mathews' status probably sometime early Sunday afternoon. Mathews' fantasy owners need to handcuff him with Jackie Battle. Battle would be the primary early-down and goal-line back, with Ronnie Brown playing in passing situations.

I was lamenting my trading of Mathews for Charles but man this is starting to look like I might have made out. Funny how perceived value can fluctuate in a few weeks.

Haven't seen this posted. From Chargers site. Encouraging.

One upside Friday afternoon at Chargers Park was Ryan Mathews’ return to practice after missing the previous two days with a stiff neck. He was listed as limited and is questionable to play Sunday according to the team’s injury report. Still, having him back on Friday was a step in the right direction.

After practice, Mathews said that his neck feels light years better than it did earlier in the week.

“It felt good,” he said. “It’s loosened up and I felt great today. I did drills and some plays and I felt real good.”

The running back sustained the injury on a vicious collision with the Buccaneers Quincy Black that ended the linebacker’s season with a serious neck injury. Mathews didn’t feel the immediate effects of the injury until after the game ended.

“It just got real tight on the plane and real sore,” he said. “That was a big hit we both took. It was real, real sore at the time so they just gave me a couple days off for it to settle down and relax a little bit…I never really (stayed away from practice) though. I’ve been going out to practice after treatment and watching it and just doing what I can to be mentally in it. I don’t think I was out for that much time for me to really get out of sync with the team. I felt good out there and I look forward to Sunday.”

So far this season, Mathews has carried the ball 112 times for 475 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and one touchdown. Historically, the third-year pro has had his strongest performances against the Broncos. Last season, he ran for a combined 262 yards and one touchdown against them.

When asked why he seems to play well against Denver, Mathews downplayed his past success against them.

“It’s nothing special, and I couldn’t really tell you why (I’ve done well against them),” he said. “I think I’ve done well against other teams too. So I couldn’t really tell you most of my big games are against Denver.”

Regardless of whom the opponent is, head coach Norv Turner was excited to have Mathews back and was pleased with what he saw out of him.

“I was encouraged watching him run around,” he said. “He feels a lot better and he moved a lot better. He went through parts of the entire practice. I’m encouraged because he’s a lot better today and he’s got two more days and we’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”

CBS Jason LaCanfora and ESPN Schefter both indicating Mathews is likely to start.

Have this horrible feeling...I start him he leaves early, I bench him he goes off.

LOL! Doncha know that players' performances are strictly correlated to which fantasy owners own them?Funny. I had the same horrible feeling and package traded Mathews, McGahee, and VJax for Doug Martin and Hakeem Nicks. So yeah, you better start Mathews because I did more than bench him, I traded him!

12.0 yards and a TD, mark it.
Duly marked.Kind of expected, especially when I just traded him away! Players have monster games after I trade them away. And when they join my team, they crap out. I am the touch of death. :hey:
Just need the TD!

Seriously, this would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic.

Someone else can draft him next year. I don't care if he goes for 2,200 yards and 30 TDs. I never want to look at him ever again.

I really think this is one of the worst offensive coaching jobs I've ever seen. The lack of creativity how they use an elite talent like mathews is stunning, all 1st and ten dives basically. Heck they even started battle again. Usage and play calling is the only thing holding him back

Pulled at the end for not getting out of bounds. Potential garbage time points missed. And considering we're not getting a whole bunch else, that sucks. At least he didn't lay a complete turd.

another 12 point week. In RW's recap they mentioned he looked to be overly conscious of avoiding the fumble and to me that reflects basically their whole offensive scheme which seems to be all about eliminating the turnovers and not focused on making big-time explosive plays down the field. I haven't run any numbers but the number of times they run dives into the line on 1st and 10 has to lead the league. there's usually not a lot there, but Mathews often runs them holding onto the ball super-tight and usually goes straight ahead until someone brings him down. they rarely run misdirection or tosses or stretch plays. the passing routes are rarely deep balls anymore, often they are kind of middle distance (10-25 yards downfield). all this fear of turnovers seems to infect everyone except Rivers of course who continues to make poor decisions, plus often has to throw into coverage as they don't really have anyone who can separate. Floyd and Alexander are big targets but not quick over short distances really, Gates has lost a step and coverage is rolled his way, so we wind up with Brown and Mathews catching all these harmless balls out of the backfield.

a conservative, avoid mistakes at all costs offensive plan coupled with a guy prone to both be aggressive and make poor decisions at QB, WRs built for making 1 on 1 plays deep and a RB that is great in space when trying to hit the big play and using him to run dives and not fumble equals one of the most frustrating offenses to watch in the last 5 years. Dallas has put together some ones that make me mad in their sloppiness but this Chargers iteration might take the cake
