What do you guys think of this guy? Do you guys think this is the year that he puts up the numbers? Let me know what everybody thinks thanks..

first, he must make the roster.then he must get and stay on the fieldif he does, i think he can surprise some people.
if he does, he'll already have surprised me.I think a change in scenery wouldn't hurt Jones
that's not a bad idea.there is a place that would be perfect.a place that is shallow in WR talent and currently has an also-ran as a WR2a place with a pro bowl QBa place that can handle off the field issuesa place where WRs can thrive with cocaine problemsjones needs to hope he gets cut and so he can get a call from valley ranch

As the Bengal have shown with Henry, the sad fact is that if you can play, someone will sign you.

To state the most serious problem with Jones, outside of the fact that he has drug problems, a character issue and doesn't currently play in the NFL is that he just isn't good at playing WR at the NFL level.

He led the Jaguars in receiving in last night's preseason game with 3 rec for 45 yards.

You'd be better off with Northcutt. That being said, I do think that Jones has played himself onto the roster thus far, but his future will hinge on the trial in october(?)

 Guess he's far off my radar. Thought they cut him.

Matt Jones led the Jaguars with 45 yards on three catches Saturday after starting opposite Reggie Williams.Thought to be a sure cut a month ago, Jones has easily earned a spot on the team. He was David Garrard's favorite target early in the game and appears to be gaining the trust of his coaching staff. We can't forecast much fantasy value in a crowded receiver corps yet, but he's worth watching closely.

i'm not saying m.jones is ever going to be star in this league or even a serviceable WR, but i don't think he should be completely written off either. he's not the hardest worker and it's obviously questionable whether he's serious about trying to succeed.

on the positive side though, he has shown glimpses.

last year, he was completely terrible. he was banged up and never just never got it together.

in '06, his 2nd year, he had a respectable 41 catches for 643 yards in 14 games. those numbers were even more impressive on a jaguars team where they didn't throw much and spread it around when they did.

another former QB, antwaan randle el, until last year (51/728/1), had never, ever had a season that was any better than jones' sophmore campaign and he's considered a serviceable WR in this league (and has the contract to prove it).

jones easily has the potential to be a decent WR in this league. don't know if he will, but he certainly can. 6'6" guys with blazing speed who've shown glimpses should get strong looks from some teams. (if the jags cut him or his legal troubles get in his way this year)

i hope he can get his legal troubles out of the way quickly and gets another shot to get it done (and takes advantage of it)

IIRC my first read of the facts was that a good lawyer could beat the case before trial. Cop searched car based on JOnes not showing his hands fast enough from his car, and sitting in your car unless obviously engaged in illegal activity is not illegal. Hunches go to the defendant in suppression cases. I'm guessing he hired a good lawyer. Plus ARK is backwards. This is like trying R Kelly in the Boondocks. The jury won't want to convict him. Being a white former star prolly helps too honestly.

Just had a draft today in an 11 team league and Jones wasn't even drafted. I say watch the news closely and grab him off waivers if things start looking morfe positive.

As bad as Jones has been in the past, he has arguably been the Jags best WR in preseason, and with his athletic ability, at the very least he should be on everyone's radar. It's not like the Jags are loaded at WR.

PORTER UNLIKELY, JONES LIKELY FOR JAGS’ SEASON OPENER

Posted by Tom Mantzouranis on August 26, 2008, 1:03 p.m.

MDS mentioned it in today’s one-liners, but it bears further emphasis that Jerry Porter still hasn’t practiced after hamstring surgery in June.

Porter was signed to upgrade a receiving corps that has been wayward despite the investment of three first-round picks this decade. The last of those picks, Matt Jones, has seen his career dangle on a string this offseason after three years with no light turning on (his Wikipedia page appropriately has “No notable achievements” under a Career Highlights section) and an arrest for felony possession of a controlled substance.

But when the Jaguars open the season on the road against the Titans, Jones will likely be lining up on the field, and Porter likely will not.

Jack Del Rio has said that Porter will need two weeks of action before being ready to play, and that he has a “slim chance” of playing in the opener if he misses practice today.

Jones’ status is further cemented by lingering injuries to Reggie Williams and Mike Walker, and by the fact that the team recently cut three receivers — John Broussard, Clyde Edwards, and Jeron Harvey — as part of a handful of releases. They’re expected to release Troy Williamson and D’Juan Woods as well, meaning that Jones is one of six players remaining. He’s guaranteed a job for the first game and, if Porter’s injury continues or the Jags decide to keep six receivers, he’ll stay employed all season long.

Whether the bottom falls out of that plan, or whether he can use this fourth season to leverage more depends on whether Jones can focus more on the field and keep his nose out of trouble (literally and figuratively) off of it.

Took all I could take, the coke thing was the last straw. Very high on him from a rookie and thought never given a chance. Hung onto him for the longest but I dropped him recently to take a chance on another flier. Let him be someone else's headache.

well if he took the last straw, you could always just cut the back of a BIC pen...

This guy is a bust. For a couple years I tried to get my hopes up that *IT* would finally all come together. It just doesn't. What a waste. No heart.

:sigh:

On to the next project WR.

While he's likely to make the 53-man roster, it'll only be as their WR4 at best, and WR5 once everybody is healthy.

Porter and Williams are the starters once Porter is up to speed. Northcutt is the WR3 slot guy this year. And Walker they love and it's only a matter of time before he becomes a full time starter (maybe 2009, maybe later this year).

Jones is tall and athletic which makes for some nice highlight catches. But he avoids contact and is not a complete receiver.

He also was in Del Rio's doghouse for about 2 years until this preseason when he knew he'd be cut if he didn't wake up, and my instinct tell me he'll revert back to form at some point and loaf at the wrong time, landing back in the doghouse.

Plus the cocaine stigma has bee mentioned.

I see him on the field some, but I just don't see any real opportunity for usable fantasy numbers. Except in very deep leagues I wouldn't own him.

Is he not in danger of being punished by the NFL for the cocaine possession charge? I didn't expect this guy to be playing this year to be honest with you.

(Rotoworld) NBC's John Maddens said during Thursday's Jaguars/Redskins game that WR Matt Jones didn't know the team's plays last season.

Analysis: It's not exactly surprising as there have been whispers about Jones' commitment level for quite some time. Madden got the goods from David Garrard, who told him that Jones was on the right page this season and could emerge as the team's go-to receiver.

I had pretty much given up on Matt Jones, but have been hearing good things about him this preseason and then I see this today. Can any homers chime in on the actual possibility that he could be the jags go to guy?

I'm pretty sure a first violation of the NFL's drug policy is mandatory counseling/treatment with no suspension. Unless this is his second offense (or falls under the 'conduct' policy) he won't be suspended.

the talk out of training camp has been this. the problem, however, is that it's translating to on the field performance. dude's had a case of the dropsies in the preseason games.

I would think this would fall under the conduct policy which seems to be just a judgement call on the behalf of the commish. I'm not really clear as to exactly how Brandon marshall for example was able to appeal it successfully. I believe the drug policy is for players that fail a drug test. I don't believe that Jones every failed one. It will probably all come down to how Jones comes through legally on this whole thing.
