Oscar nominations in 1994, 2005, 2007, 2014. Golden Globe nominations in 1994, 1998, 2003, 2005, 2007 (twice), 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014. Where was the down period?

Absolutely. After titanic I think he was in a bad spot. Best movie of the year, huge $$$ and the lead actor was thought of as almost inconsequential. The man in the iron mask and the beAch were largely flops. Next was gangs which, iirc, didn't do as well as many hoped and was late, cost too much, etc. but it did show he had real chops. Catch me if you can and aviator righted the ship and made him a "serious" actor. But 98 to 2002 without a credible hit (and very little work in the first place) was definitely a down period.

And while Gangs was great, it didn't do much to shed the "pretty boy" image he had. And standing next to DDL couldn't have helped, either. Agree that once he did Catch me if you can and Aviator he had made the turn.

Finally watched Dallas Buyer's Club. Great movie. Mcconaughey is an amazing actor.

Regarding the sucky movies, would any actor in the history of acting NOT looked stupid in those movies?? Sahara?? How to lose a guy?? Some of the other crap.......

Dude is a straight pimp actor when he chooses not-crap material to work with.

Wooderson. His career could have easily ended with that. How can you take the guy seriously after that? Ever?? Well, we do now. We do now.

Also, taking a straight paycheck once in a while allows these guys to take on meaty roles in smaller films.
