Maurice Drew - Dynasty (1 Viewer)

J-Rock

I drafted him in the 2nd round of our rookie draft and I need to assign him a contract. I have a years cap and am trying to decide how long to lock this guy up for. I posted here because I figured this is good info on a rookie RB and many dynasty players would be interested in this topic.

Q. How many productive years. games does Taylor have left?

Q. What are the odds of Drew getting the starting role when Taylor is done?

Thoughts?

I think this is the last year of Fred as the feature back in Jacksonville. I would say when Taylor leaves, Drew gets a chance to win at least a Warrick Dunn type role (With a healthy Greg Jones as Duckett). I would be looking to sign Drew to a 4 or 5 year deal if you can swing it. Do you recoup years when you cut someone early in a contract?

Very tough question to answer. Considering Fred Taylor, 9 years in at present, I would say to lock up Drew for 3 years would be a good number. However, what if Jax brings in another RB on the free agent market in the next two years? What if they bring in Deuce? Weighing the risks against the possible rewards I would not lock up Drew for more than 3 years.

Just to qualify my position, I have not played in a league that deals with contracts so my thoughts are purely speculative.

I only recoup the final year of the contract.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the topic, but these pics of.....Drew and Maroney are hilarious.

Maroney's "Mitch Green" costume was the hit of the party....

I wouldn't count on Drew getting a full time gig at this level. The odds are simply stacked against a guy his size being able to handle 200+ carries. Nevertheless, he is a very talented back, so it wouldn't hurt to lock him up for a couple seasons. http://lang.dailynews.com/socal/gallery/sp...1804_UCLA/1.jpg

He is listed at 5-8, 205lbs, and while he probably has the weight covered, I'd be shocked if he were any taller than 5'6.

Prepare to be shocked. MJD is 5'6" and 3/4 to be exact and he was 207 lbs at the combine. It's easy to look at his height and think he's got no shot to be successful in the NFL as a starter, but that would be a mistake. It's been said before but the guy is built really well with huge legs. He's similar to Brian Westbrook physically and also receiving skills. But he's a really good runner too. He's fast (4.39 40-yard dash), quick, and has great ability to make people miss. There are numerous examples of successful undersized RBs in the NFL and I think MJD will become one of them.

I think this is a distinct possibility for a team that loves to run the ball. Greg Jones looked like he might have been the heir apparent, but the ACL probably takes care of that. IIRC, Del Rio has said that he thinks Drew could be a full-time feature back, but we'll have to see.

I hope you are right. I love watching Drew play, but I do not think it's in Drew's best interest or the teams to give a guy his size 20+ carries a game. The way I see it, a guy his size is simply asking for an injury if he his overworked. But I do agree with you, compared to most tiny RB's that come into the league, Drew has the body-type to prove me wrong.
