Awesome news. I'm hoping this venture goes great for you. I keep seeing more and more news stories about the BBQ revival in this country. Seems like you're striking while the smoker is hot.

 
Some great advice that I saw in Glumpy's restaurant thread that's worth repeating: If you serve good food, you'll get more customers than if you serve bad food.

Something to think about.

I jinked it. City hall strikes again. My neighbors are appealing my pevious city approval to open a restaurant ....city attorney involved....im having a nervous breakdown in 5, 4, 3, ..... somebody find me a good lawyer please.

So no...I wont be open tomorrow. I wont jink it again.

You know it's not really a shock to me that NOLA houses no Fortune 500 companies anymore after seeing this.

 
i won't lie. i started hyperventilating and having a full blown panic attack on the steps of city hall today. I have the love of my kids keeping my thoughts from straying to far to the deep dark places I have been thinking of for the last few hours. I'm freaking tearing up as i type this crap. ugh. I haven't felt this low in a long time....maybe ever.

but...

i spoke with a dad from my kids school that is a lawyer at city hall. he spent 2 hours trying to get the skinny. the condo people don't have a leg to stand on...the occupancy may be granted even tomorrow . he thinks the hearing scheduled for mid august will go in my favor. i may be able to open soon anyway he says. he told me to relax...it would be ok.

i am going to go home and pass out. i feel like i've been beaten up by a young mike tyson.

 
Stay strong GBTM! Just go to the condo people that they get free BBQ once a month for a year. You'll be open tomorrow.

Hang in there. You'll be up soon enough and this will look like a minor speed bump in the rearview mirror. I know it sucks right now, though. T&P your way.

It sounds like the surrounding businesses have an issue with the landlord, not Tipsy himself. Why the hell they waited so long to ##### & moan?...Who knows.

I also find it suspicious that this takes place THE NIGHT BEFORE you planned on opening....

Jeez. What a mess. Damon faced a fight with neighbors as well. Not to be a downer, but if I were fighting a restaurant opening in my neighborhood I'd probably wait to the last minute too with the hope that they had no budget left to defend themselves. At the same time, it's ridiculous that there is no "date of complaint" statue where permits are publicly acknowledged and only so many days are avialble to protest thjen you are SOL.

I so want to throw some comments in that Facebook thread to the condo people. They are absentee condo owners willing to bankrupt an innocent person and #### all over his dream because of a dispute over their parking spot? Seriously? I get that they have issue with the landlord but fin another means of restitution you ##########s.

Good luck Tipsy. I'm sure it will all work out and someday when the Food Network does a feature on how you got started you'll be able to relive the experience and laugh.

 
they are dealing with my landlord....he is very aggressive and made more than one enemy over the years. he handled this very poorly. the condo owners are upset...but the facts are they have an parking lot that is illegal and the city said must be changed.

if i were the condo owner i would be mad at this landlord too. he has no tact.

I thought about putting something on there, too, but from 1000 miles away what I think really doesn't matter, and, like you, I'm sure he doesn't need this escalated by internet friends.

It does suck major #### though.

If distance is the deciding factor the condo folk are actually in California.

walked around this on google earth. what exactly is the issue? the 3 spot lot behind you, or something else? That 3 spot lot doesn't seem unique to the area.

I get a call this morning that either gives me permission or makes me wait until mid-August when their complaint is being heard.

Needless to say I just woke up at 5 and threw my guts up. I cannot take much more of this...seriously. I'm really starting to fear for my sanity.

If it goes south there may be other options....one of my best friends is about to jump in the fray and has mad connections at city hall. I haven't asked for his help for a bunch of reasons...all of which seem really stupid now. Boils down to not wanting to do things the old boy network way ......or risk my friends standing with politicos in city hall....but he wants to help and will if this call sucks this morning.

 
I've had a recurring dream basically since I started my first pop up dinners back in 2011. The dream usually includes me escaping with my whole family from a looming hurricane in the gulf....a hurricane that utterly destroys New Orleans about a week after I open my restaurant.

I've been following this for a couple of days now....I generally don't worry too much until they pass Jamaica, but its track continues to stay south of the big islands which is usually bad for the gulf coast. I know its early....but can anybody blame me for being a little fatalistic?

I need medication...but please don't think I don't see some of the humor in all of this.
