McClure's BBQ (1 Viewer)

ah....brunch has been brought up here again. this city is obsessed with brunch so maybe we go forward soon.

here is a menu we are working on....not sure if it will ever see the light of day but its fun to play

...
Love the menu.

Question - what about Surrey's serving breakfast/brunch across the street? Are you bumping up against that or is that helpful?

very helpful. people wait forever for brunch...surreys is good but nothing special. I'll be cheaper, faster, and with more comfort style food than their semi healthy breakfast.

Hosting lunch for our local food writer with the Advocate/NPR, and one of the most well known bbq authors / teachers / food show celeb Steven Raichlen who is in town for a hot minute and asked to go to the best :) Fairly gushy over this...the dude knows every major pit master in the country.

Also....a show on the Food Network has approached me to feature MCBQ ....but I'm pretty sure I'm going to pass. They usually put cameras up and find bad things to tell the owner and goad them into firing people. It is their #1 show at the moment...but I'm worried about reputation. I've been doing this too long to have a tv show pointing out problems to me. What say ye FFA?

I didn't make it out to McClures for lunch today as there was no time to get away from the conference. I called McClure's to see if Tipsy was there this evening, but the guy who answered said he was gone for the night.

I did however make it over to August for dinner. The food was really excellent, although I wish I could have lingered longer and enjoyed it more. My colleague isn't much of a foodie or one to take his time with anything.

I'm hoping to make it over to McClure's for lunch on Friday before my flight departs in the evening. I might be able to do dinner tomorrow night though that's not preferred. Tipsy, will you be there either of those two times?
today will be tough...been here since 2 am...gotta cater downtown, go to Mississippi, be back for 3 for the lunch thing...but bolting for a nap as soon as thats over...gotta roast a pig overnight.

That horrible hidden camera show??
i guess i know your vote :)
Yea. I think that show would cheapen your product.
Yeah when you mentioned it earlier via text , I was in the "any TV pub is good pub" camp but after previewing a few episodes, I'm not sure Id want them in there.. Especially without final creative sign off on what airs (which you won't get, because shows like that overdramatize for effect).I think your gut is right here

I thought about having everyone here having some various social disorder or other shtick. I was thinking of the over the top gay black guy, the meth head, the bong ripping guitar player, the thief, and hopeless romantic chick that has with tammy faye tears every morning. also the sexual deviant that enjoys getting the meat rubbed just a little too enthusiastically. and everyone treats the customers with pop copy (see chappelle show) attitude. Hell yeah i suck toes, can i help you?

If this is Charles Stiles' show, you best think long and hard about this.

You would definitely gain exposure from the show, as it has solid ratings and gets renewed every year, which is amazing. The show is very forumula-driven. They will hire actors to 'portray' your rogue employees, who you will have to fire. If you don't have a story that is acceptable to them, they will hand you a ready-made story and you'll have to live with it because the production contract you will already have signed says you will.

If it were me, I'd invest my time in more relevant, local television exposure, like presenting your feature menu items on a morning show or something like that.

Stiles' show is mostly about his production company and his viewers who are 'aghast' at the same schtick week after week on this so called reality show. It ain't about your food or you.

This is a copy/paste from a dark corner of the interwebs:

"Mystery Diners" is not only fake, but the company that Charles Stiles founded, Business Evaluation Services, and which is featured on this show, has an F rating from the Better Business Bureau. Why the F rating? Because the BBB has not been able to verify that the company even exists, and repeated attempts to contact Charles Stiles have been unsuccessful. The company was registered for the sole purpose of making Mystery Diners seem legitimate, should a viewer attempt to look up Mr. Stiles.

Definitely pass. Nothing about those shows puts the actual restaurant in a good light.

#### the show. you are making lunch for Steven Raichlen? That's pretty huge. Seems some good will from him channeled in the right direction would do far more for your brand.

Interesting stuff. I always thought his company was fake.

That whole show is awful. Worst thing on tv. That's their highest rated show?

stay away from the 'reality'-hidden camera show. There will be better opportunities.

Did the canceled show ever air?

Showed up this afternoon, and even though Tipsy was out, me and two of my fellow conference attendees enjoyed a fine meal at McClure's BBQ. We shared the all meat, all sides as well as a starter of gumbo. The collards were excellent, as was the chicken. The pulled pork was delishious, and the brisket generated no complaints from me. The cornbread and the mac n' cheese didn't wow me though honestly. The inclusion of many different BBQ sauces was a good idea. Overall, an excellent BBQ meal, but next time I'll probably hit up a pulled pork platter as that or brisket is my jam.

The woman who was running the show (Jennifer, I think) was very nice and reminded me about getting a beer across the street. She even called cabs for people in my party. I did miss Neil though, as that was one of the main reasons I wanted to go.

Best of luck Tipsy. Your food speaks for itself.

From Steve Raichlen on twitter & facebook with a picture of my all meat and all side platter.....

@sraichlen: Hard at work: #BBQ sampler at @McClure's in NOLA. What's the best BBQ joint in YOUR town? http://ow.ly/i/7FN7f " woohoo

then a few seconds later tweets this....

Making a list & counting it twice. What's the best BBQ joint in YOUR town. This was my top 10 in 2013

It seems he is making a top 10 in the country list again....can I possibly be on that? That would be the most ridiculous thing to ever happen to me.

It is not ridiculous. You put in a lot of hard work.

32 turkeys (640 pounds) smoked this week. I turned down more orders than I took x4. Curses for a small space and only one pit on hand.

Pics looked good. Can you describe the taste as compared to a traditional oven-cooked bird?

more delicious :towelwave:

the brine I use probably had more impact on the overall flavor of the bird. The smoke certainly was there, but the bird was juicy and flavorful. Better than any oven bird i've done

Going to do my best to get some BBQ before my flight today. How difficult is it to get a cab from the restaurant? I'll only have maybe 45 min to spare.

Shouldn't be too hard - that is not far from some pretty busy areas along Magazine.

MADE IT. And worth the trip. Got the all meats and all sides which is about five times I need but wanted to sample. Neil's good people.

And what better entry than under a sign that says "you don't make friends with salad"

"Coach" waited for me since I was a nice fare to the airport. Took some backway where I figured this is the greatest shortcut ever, or I'm about to get buried in some industrial area outside of N.O.

man....just had a photojournalist shoot about 10k shots of me and the store in the last 24 hours. His resume is unreal....Haiti...Rwanda...Mexico (just shot a movie that made sundance last year about the cartels)....Afghanistan.....unbelievable to me that someone is paying him to shoot ole bbq guy here in NOLA. Flew him down just to shoot me....and he has 9 more cities / businesses to shoot along with 10 other photographers doing the same thing nationwide for an big ad campaign I was nominated for months ago....these people are spending more on his little trip than I'll make in profits all year.

My life is weird. Thats all there is to it. Fist bumping Dave Chappelle from the best seats in the house at the Sanger on Friday night to getting photographed by the guy that does stuff like this the next day. And today I spilled about a quart of raw chicken juice down my shirt at 6 am. L. I. V. I. N. :)

Oh...he ate my food too....called his cousin in NYC whom owns 4 restaurants and told him to get down here to try it.....says i'd be a perfect fit for his beer garden place in Brooklyn.

McClure's - The legend grows!Congrats
i'm pretty sure we might have a problem with a McClure's in Brooklyn....
Have you checked to see if McClures is a registered mark? Can you register something?

McClure's in BK? Now we are talking!!! Plus, the hipsters love bbq. There are a few decent cue places in NYC (hill country, fette sau, dinosaur bbq, etc) but yours destroys them all.

I love how humble you're, Tipsy.

Tipsy,

I'll be in town next week with a large group. Do you know if you will be working lunch on either Monday or Tuesday? I don't know if the whole group will come, just some of us, or I may put in a large take out order depending on what the group wants to do. I've talked you up a ton and everyone is excited to try your famous BBQ!
