Raiders to name McCown starter for opener

NFL.com

The Oakland Raiders are expected to announce that Josh McCown has won the starting quarterback job for the season opener against Detroit on Sunday, the NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports.

Culpepper was sharper in the Raiders' final exhibition game Thursday at Seattle, completing 11-of-19 passes for 108 yards and leading the offense to its only touchdown in a 19-14 loss. But Culpepper also threw an interception.

McCown started the game and went 5-for-12 for 75 yards in four series.

Culpepper was not as familiar with the offense as McCown after signing with the team on July 31 when it became apparent that top draft pick JaMarcus Russell would not be in camp anytime soon because of a contract dispute that has lasted an NFL-record number of days.

Russell remains unsigned and the Raiders could enter the season without their quarterback of the future on the roster.

Culpepper has shown that his surgically repaired right knee is healthy this preseason. He's thrown four touchdown passes with only one interception as he tries to put last year's disappointment in Miami behind him.

After throwing 39 touchdown passes in 2004 in Minnesota, Culpepper battled injuries the past two years and had just eight TD passes and 18 turnovers. That led to his release by Miami in July and his late signing with the Raiders.

McCown was acquired in a draft-day trade with the Lions, hoping for a chance to prove he can be an NFL starter. McCown made 22 starts with Arizona before backing up Jon Kitna in Detroit last season.

Andrew Walter, who started eight games last season, is the third quarterback on the roster right now. But Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said last week that the team could choose to go with only two, leaving a spot for Russell when he eventually signs.

Anyone who said they were sure who the starter would be before this announcement was just kidding themselves.

Playbook familiarity or not, no way would I start Mc over Culpepper.

So what's the cutoff date for Russell ie if he's not signed by X date he goes back into next year's draft?

Well color me shocked. It sure seemed like Culpepper outplayed McCown.
Not really they were both like 24 - 47 350yds McCown 26 - 47 308 yds Culpepperbut C Pep threw 4 Tds and 1 Int while McCown 0 - 0.I dont see any of the two outplaying the other , but i think McCown has more upside younger - healthier .

Is Kiffin gonna play these stupid head games every week? this isnt college, Jerk.

I think that's a little better.

Either Lane Kiffin has lost his mind, or Adam got this one wrong.

Why . Culpepper played ok in pre season but i dont think he is nearly as mobile as the stats of last game shows ( Like 20 yds rushing ) so if Culp cant move he becomes a very very ordinary QB .

I think McCown showed he can pa good Qb in this league he is more mobile , younger and healthier then C Pep why not try him and if it goes wrong then bring in C pep . It s not like the Raiders are a playoff contender.

How would you define "outplayed"?

Seriously. He (Pepp) led them down the field to score after score. McCown, not so much.

This has "mastermind" (Davis) written all over it. Can't have a guy he went after in the off season not be the starter.

It's pretty troubling watching Kiffin and the QBs dodge bullets all day when being questioned about Sunday's starter . . .

Kiffin wants to keep "a competitive edge" . . .

do you really NEED to waste alot of energy in dodging all these questions to beat Detroit???

Cmon. You don't really think Kiffin got to make the call, do you? I'd bet that he has been waiting to hear from Big Al and thus the delay.

News Story: NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Josh McCown will be on an extremely short leash as the Raiders' starting quarterback.

Fantasy Analysis: Oakland would be forced to use a "vanilla offense" with Culpepper at the helm right now, Schefter says, but the plan is for Daunte to take over if McCown slips up at all. Neither QB is roster worthy in 12-team leagues at this point.

Wednesday, September 05, 4:15 PM EST (Week 1)

News Story: Daunte Culpepper has lost out to Josh McCown in the battle for the Raiders' starting QB job. Culpepper's preseason numbers were a little better and he was considered to be the favorite for the job, but the Raiders apparently feel that McCown has a better grasp on the offense.

Wednesday, September 05, 4:14 PM EST (Week 1)

News Story: Daunte Culpepper won't start Week 1 despite earlier reports from ESPNews.

Fantasy Analysis: Quite a surprise. Lane Kiffin hasn't appeared totally comfortable with Culpepper's knowledge of the offense. Culpepper will probably take over during the season, but there's no sense holding on to him in shallow redraft leagues in the meantime.

Wednesday, September 05, 4:02 PM EST (Week 1)

News Story: The Raiders are reportedly expected to announce that Josh McCown will start the season opener against Detroit on Sunday, NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports. This contradicts earlier reports that Culpepper had the edge.

Fantasy Analysis: No announcement on the QB situation has been made by the Raiders. If the report is accurate, McCown's familiarity with the offense (Culpepper did not sign with the team until July 31) would likely be the deciding factor. We'll look for an official announcement, one way or the other, in the coming days.

News Story: ESPNews reports Daunte Culpepper will be the Raiders' starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Lions.

Fantasy Analysis: This isn't set in stone, but we expect to know for sure by Wednesday evening. Culpepper was reportedly in good spirits after coach Lane Kiffin divulged his starter after Tuesday's workout. Kiffin hasn't made his choice public yet.

Camp is over..Kiffen needs to make a decision and stop being a jerk. I don`t like this guy already. And I don`t have a Raider on any of my teams.

When I see Kiffen I'm reminded of a quote some reporter offered up regarding Marvin Lewis being named head coach

of the Bengals "He wanted an NFL head coaching job in the worst way and that's what he got".

What kind of an idiot signs on to take orders from Al Davis (the man has forgotten more about football than most people will ever know and therein lies the problem).

With all this brouhaha it strikes me that Kiffin still hasn't said anything official! :hophead:

This is all the news agencies trying to be first off the mark...."expected to announce..." I'd like to see him say it in front of cameras...Might be irrelevant--how many plan to start either one?

Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said Wednesday that he doesn't anticipate making his decision at quarterback public before Sunday's afternoon game.

Josh McCown is expected to be the Oakland starter by most accounts.

I think it effects the other players; Porter, Curry, Jordan...all of which were possible "sleeper" plays week 1.

that's NOT what he said . . . he said that WE wouldnt know before Sunday - he said that he knows AND the players know . . .

Fantasy owners can go bite themselves when it comes to my favorite team... and I think Kiffin is going to right the ship. So I could care less if WE know who the starter is... I'm sure he knows who will take the first snap.

I doubt if there more than a few people really contemplating starting Culpepper or McCown in Week 1 . . .

You need to be in a few more dyansty leagues...how would you like the choice between C-Pepp, McCown, Croyle, and Huard? We have an owner that has made his bed...

:goodposting: have 'em both but it's an unusual league

my mistake . . . I was in a redraft frame of mind . . . I am in a league with someone that has Huard and Quinn and Cpep to choose from . . .

Several of the Sirius NFL radio crew had been saying Mccown for quite some time.
They have? I started tuning them out. It seems they've increased their "XXXXXX is going to be a good player for a long time in this league" to about 99% of the NFL.
They didn't mention whether or not he was any good. Just that he would be named the starter. I've gotten great information on that channel over the years. Coaches are regularly interviewed and they get to a number of players as well.

A guy with no NFL head-coaching experience trying to build a name for himself.
Bad reason to take the Raider job(not ragging on the team just the organization. As a Skins fan, I know all about great organizations and lously ones. We've had both here. Unfortunatly we've gone from the former to the latter since Danny took over).

What the...?Damn, the Raiders are a mess.

Okay ...2 things.

1-after reading this i can`t help but think it HAS to be C-Pepp , unless they were told to ''act a certain way''...c`mon get real.

Raiders coach Lane Kiffin says there's a lot to be said about body language. With that in mind, it looks like Daunte Culpepper is the new starting quarterback for his Oakland Raiders.

Culpepper walked off the practice field with a broad smile Tuesday, and kept it grinning in the locker room after Kiffin told reporters he informed Culpepper and Josh McCown which player won the quarterback competition.

Kiffin said he "might" go public with his decision today. Culpepper's demeanor, coupled with McCown's sighs and frowns, spoke volumes when Kiffin wouldn't.

2-I have a hard time believing that kid kiffin would put mcown in against his former coach who would know his formert qb as well as anyone and be able to gameplan for him .

All this adds up to kid kiffin playing stupid head games with detroit using any advantage he can get....C-Pepp will be sundays starter ....bank it.
