Ravens running back Willis McGahee was among the surprises on the team's physically-unable-to-perform list.
But McGahee is expected to come off the list no later than Thursday, coach John Harbaugh said today at McDaniel College. McGahee had arthroscopic knee surgery this offseason.
"We want to make sure Willis' knee doesn't swell up," Harbaugh said after the first training camp practice with rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans. "We want to make sure he can take the pounding of a workout and see how he responds."
McGahee said he had no pain or swelling after workouts. In fact, he showed up about 20 minutes before the start of practice.
Last year, the former Pro Bowl running back arrived as soon as practice started. Then, after a few practices, McGahee needed knee surgery during camp.
"I'm looking forward to this season," said McGahee, who gained a career-low 671 yards rushing. "It's going to be a good season. I can feel it in my bones."
McGahee's conditioning has been a hot topic since he was traded to the Ravens in 2007. Last year, he reported to camp out of shape.
But Harbaugh said McGahee "looked very good" on the conditioning test and had good muscle mass in his legs.
"It looks like he's done a good job," Harbaugh said.
The others on the PUP list are: guards Ben Grubbs (ankle) and Marshal Yanda (knee); cornerback Samari Rolle (groin and shoulder); wide receiver Yamon Figurs; offensive tackles Adam Terry (knee), Joe Reitz and Lou Saucedo; defensive tackle Lamar Divens; linebacker Jason Phillips; and tight end Davon Drew.
The Ravens can take a player off PUP throughout the preseason. If a player is on the PUP list at the start of the regular season, he must miss at least the first six weeks of the season.
"Most of it is temporary," Harbaugh said. "We want to make sure that guys can practice. That's the bottom line."
Note: The Ravens have signed 5-foot-7 journeyman receiver Jayson Foster, who is on his fourth team (Miami, Denver and Pittsburgh were the others) in two seasons. He has not made a catch in the NFL.
