McGahee to be possibly cut before season is over? (RUMOR) (1 Viewer)

.02 from a homer..Mike Preston is a blow-hard who's writing style is always that the glass is half empty. That doesn't mean that everything he says is nonsense. Just that, like any other source, you have to filter it.What has been coming out in the local media the last few weeks is:McGahee reported to camp out of shape and that he hasn't had his nose in the playbook. It has been reported that he has been having to ask the other players on the field what he is supposed to be doing. (This doesn't seem that odd to me as it is a new offense). The media says that the club is angry with him.Everything coming from the coach is "McGahee is our starter", "The surgery was just a clean up procedure to have him 100 percent for the season", etc.I would be shocked if he were cut. Hope this helps.
Thanks Bert. That does help.J

Good stuff. Given the move in the NFL to more RBBC situations, it's not surprising that teams are taking a closer look at keeping/paying/putting up with "star" RBs. Having said that, I don't understand the whole "cut" thing with him and Ronnie Brown. Regardless of their possible loss in value in some teams' eyes, these star RBs still have some value and cutting them does not lead to any value.

Mike Preston on his blog reports:

Harbaugh said he didn't know when injured running back Willis McGahee would return, and that McGahee might possibly miss the entire preseason. Somehow that doesn't surprise me, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens cut him before the season is over.

McGahee has angered a lot of Ravens officials over at the Castle with his poor work ethic. He doesn't know his plays so I don't see him playing much in the first regular-season game.

Ravens Insider

Seems a little extreme to me. Especially since McGahee has said he will be back for the regular season opener. Looks a little more like reporter speculation vs actual team info.
That would be ridiculously surprising. It is extremely rare that high priced players get cut mid-season. If he said that he, "Wouldn't be surprised if McGahee was relegated to backup before the season is over" that would be one thing but a player has to do something absolutely outrageous to hurt the team to get cut mid-season.

If he wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens decided to eat McGahee's contract for the season, hurt their depth at RB and rely on a rookie RB with very little at WR or QB you would think he would have something better to go on.
Having drafted Rice and McGahee...I couldn't care less if Baltimore were to cut him now, during the season or at the end of the season. That would just turn my situation of a starter and a handcuff into 2 starters.I take these comments with a grain of salt.

Does anyone think that McGahee might be great value right now? The McGahee owner in my league is trying desperately to deal him for guys like Maroney, Jacobs, and Graham and being shot down. I'm trying to find his true value right now, but it seems almost impossible. The range of opinions on this guy run the gammit.

Take the risk. Remember that Jesse Chatman was outplaying Ronnie Brown last year, and then Cam Cameron got a lot out of Brown before he got hurt. McGahee is definitely a knucklhead, but if you can get him at the price of a RB3, you have to roll the dice on that one. The upside is huge.

RB3? Is that 5th round? I've never seen him get out of the early 3rd round. RB2 with a WR1 yes unless you are going RB/RB/RB.

Some previous topics involving Mike Preston on this board:

Joe, this is one of the first times I've ever heard Preston even claim that he has inside sources on the team. He's a columnist who has long been critical of the team and Billick and his claim to knowledge about the Boller situation makes me innately suspicious. This doesn't mean that he's automatically wrong, however.

Ravens | Mason could be on the block Published Thu Mar 22 10:46:00 a.m. CT 2007

(KFFL) Mike Preston, reporting for the Sporting News, reports it wouldn't be surprising if the Baltimore Ravens were shopping veteran WR Derrick Mason. Mason expressed dissatisfaction with his role in the offense at the end of the season, a recurring topic the past two years. The Ravens have enough talent and depth to trade him.

Willis McGahee-RB-Ravens Aug. 24 - 1:34 pm et

Ravens beat writer Mike Preston says he's seen little "acceleration" out of Willis McGahee in training camp and the preseason.

McGahee has been impressive in red-zone work, but hasn't broken a long run. He also hasn't averaged over four yards-per-carry once in his career, so there's little reason to believe he will in the Ravens' conservative attack.

Mike Preston is NOT the Ravens beat reporter. He is a columnist with a history of complaining and agitating against a lot of things the Ravens do (and ANYTHING that has to do with Billick). He has been doing a lot of short blog entries this training camp but he is in no way a beat reporter. He is very fond of stirring the pot with this team.

I'm not saying he's completly wrong in wanting to see more from McGahee. Just make sure you know who your dealing with here.
