McMillions - HBO (1 Viewer)

Didn’t see last nights episode but did catch up yesterday afternoon. What a crazy story- almost too weird to believe. It would have made a heck of a scripted miniseries as well give the level of characters we are dealing with.
It's a bit like a subplot for The Sopranos.

I'm not sure we're watching the same show.  I thought that episode was great.
I don’t care about any of these people. I want to know how the guy got the tickets and a few other things. That was way too much background on a tremendously boring lot of people imo.

But it's all part of the huge conspiracy.  This story is and has always been about the huge conspiracy it was.  I'm not sure how not wanting to hear about the conspiracy is too much.

And to be clear, we're all entitled to our own opinions.  Not trying to sway you.  I'm just saying I'm confused how you don't want to hear about all of the details.

Im kind of with Capella now... I find it interesting but there is WAY TOO much back story with all these people....

Agreed that this last one was a slog. No offense but don't really give a #### about Jerry Columbo's kid in the context of this story.

This would have been a tight two hours... this is really spread paper thin in the name of content.  Too much time for too little story
It feels like no way we are only at the halfway point and I am worried about what they have for 2nd half. As of right now, I am really unsure where this could go that warrants 4 more episodes. There better be a big twist coming up.

There's only 2 left

Ten minutes of the wife in the red dress was enough    dont need two episodes on her.

Lds guy could have been done in 10 minutes also.

I also thought going into it that it was going to be like I, Tonya where it was a tongue in cheek recreation made to look like a documentary about the  real life events.

I hear DeNiro plays Columbo in the final episode.  Poor choice, in my opinion.
I don't think you get it. McMillions is a total ripoff of this thing that actually happened 20 years ago. They are using all the same people in McMillions who were actually involved in 2000 as a wink and nod for those who know about it.

Like an homage?  Hmm.  I like that idea.  Wonder why more films don't work that stuff in?

Basically. Made it halfway through this week's episode and pulled the plug. They dragged this out way too much

Painful 4th episode, what a slog.  There's two interesting "plot points" in the hour.  Should have just made  a TV movie with John Goodman as Uncle Jerry and Walton Goggins as the FBI Guy

finally caught e4 last night ...

very meandering, considering there are only 2 episides left.  i keep waiting for the big moment where they allow that 9/11 derailed the investigation somewhat (seeing as how the flashpoint here is August of '01), but i guess that is not gonna factor at all.

i mean, they constantly remind you that 2001 was the year, as they impose it on the screen in huge font a couple/few times per episode ... thought there was an end, via 9/11, to justify those means.

there may still be, but with roughly 110 minutes left, that's an awful lotta meat to chomp thru, especially with us still being clueless as to Unc J's procuring method.

faaaaading here.

This reminds me of a “show me a hero” which at its core is a fascinating story but spread way too thin.  Just not enough material there either

I agree that the 4th episode was pretty boring, but I am hopeful that the last two will pick it up again and finish strong.  The pacing of the last one was odd as well as they suddenly introduced Colombo's son and then minutes left delved into others and the son and crazy wife were unseen again (unless I was so bored that I zoned out and missed them   ).

Again, I could be wrong here, and I don't want to look it up (or know until the reveal, at this point) but I swear the FBI announced charges just days before 9/11.  I think they had concluded the investigation and began rounding people up either end of August or first week of September.  My guess is that we start to learn of all the details tonight and the episode will end with 9/11 recordings.  Then the final episode will be about how much time everyone got and the final outcome.  That's my guess.

I’m hooked on this show. Agreed, ep 4 was a bit off from the others, but I don’t think a 2 hour show does this justice. It was a 10+ year conspiracy that nobody really knows about, yet I’d venture a guess and say just about everyone in this thread peeled one of these game pieces in their lifetime looking for Boardwalk or Park Place. (Forgive my stereotype of the average FBG, but anyone in the 30-60yo age range that lives in the US probably had a good chance of playing the game or being deluged by the advertising for it during those years)

I want to know the individuals involved, sometimes real life is way more interesting than Hollywood. In fact, if this was done as a Hollywood fictional movie, it would probably bomb at the box office. The real people make this story interesting.

I thought Affleck and Damon bought the movie rights to this.  Could be wrong.  I know this documentary series is done by Mark Wahlberg.

I hope tonight they get more into Colombo’s grandchild. Does the kid prefer puréed carrots or pumpkin? Sleeping through the night yet? Old enough for a play date?

Pulled the plug after Ep 4, not sure I'll go back.

Like others have said, this should have been 2 episodes.  Maybe 3.  No need to watch Columbo's kid playing with his new baby.

I disagree.  Part of the point is to show just how much work goes into this kind of operation.  Also, it has become obvious that they are also showing the human cost here.  A whole bunch of completely innocent people lost their jobs through no fault of their own.  And one guy got jobbed by his step-father.

Exactly.  This wasn't just about one or two guys.  This was oddly like Enron, in a sense.  Not as big, but companies going bankrupt because of one person's choices.

Also, it's important to realize that the story being told is showing you exactly how the FBI is learning of things in the investigation.  They just kept peeling back the onion and finding more and more.  I thought it was another great episode.

I noticed they didn't even show a hint of 9/11 in the previews for the finale.  I wonder if that won't even get talked about.  But you could see that the arrests for this all started I think it said August 23rd of 2001.  I knew it was something like that.  I just remember reading about it and then days later, the world falling apart.

Ben Affleck confirms the status of McDonald’s Monopoly Scam movie  (called "McScam")      March 4, 2020
https://www.comingsoon.net/movies/trailers/1125435-ben-affleck-confirms-status-of-mcdonalds-monopoly-scam-movie

After over a year since 20th Century Fox, now called 20th Century Studios, won the rights to Jeff Maysh’s article about the McDonald’s Monopoly Scam in an intense bidding war against other major studios, Oscar-winning writer-director Ben Affleck (Argo) has finally opened up about the project, revealing the current status of its’ development following Disney’s acquisition of Fox.

Speaking with Collider, Affleck has confirmed that he and Matt Damon are still developing and committed to the McScam film despite the major changes that happened within the studio’s management and brand. He also revealed that they’ve recently received a new script draft which was probably from Deadpool writing duo Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who were attached to pen the adaptation.

“We’ve gotten a new draft. That’s really good.” Affleck said. “Hollywood’s a weird place, because the person who was running the studio when they bought that script, just left that job. And the studio that was going to make it got bought by another studio.   So there’s these moments where things sort themselves out, and you sort of see ‘Is this still a priority, or are they really interested in different kinds of movies?’ And I’m not sure whether or not, McScam, what kind of priority it is. We really like it. We’re still developing the script.”

Based on Jeff Maysh’s The Daily Beast article titled “How An Ex-Cop Rigged McDonald’s Monopoly Game And Stole Millions,” the true story centers on an ex-cop, Jerome Jacobson, in Rhode Island who rigged the McDonald’s Monopoly Game and allegedly stole over $24 million. Jacobson apparently shared the stolen money with a group of co-conspirators who offered bribes to the ex-cop. Maysh’s article details how Jacobson fell under the FBI’s gaze after years of he and his network illegally rigging the game to steal millions. Using undercover agents, the FBI sent in a camera crew to Jacobson’s home to listen to his fraudulent story of how he supposedly legitimately won the game, recording every lie.

Jacobson, who acted as head of security for a Los Angeles company that was responsible for generating the game pieces, worked with an interesting group of co-conspirators that consisted of mobsters, a psychic, strip-club owners, drug traffickers, and even a Mormon family who helped steal $24 million in cash and prizes.

Starring Matt Damon, The McDonald’s Monopoly Game theft film adaptation will be directed by Ben Affleck from a script that will be written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool). Oscar-winning duo Affleck and Damon (Good Will Hunting) will also be serving as producers through their Pearl Street Films banner. David Klawans (Argo) is set to executive produce the feature. Matt Reilly will oversee the project for Fox while Madison Ainley steers it for Pearl Street.

Among the names and studios who lined up to bid on the rights to the article include Universal for Kevin Hart, Warner Bros for John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, Steve Carell, producer Andrew Lazar, Netflix, Eric Newman, Bryan Unkeless, Robert Downey Jr. & Susan Downey, and Todd Phillips, but they all ultimately lost to Affleck, Damon, and Fox.
