Megaton signs richest deal ever (1 Viewer)

Bigger than Fitz's contract for sure. He deserves it though, and the Lions didn't want to risk losing him (even with a franchise tag, teams would give up a 1st and 3rd to land him).

Nice job getting it done early.

Huge money to WRs continues. Adam Schefter is reporting that the Lions have signed Megatron to an extension that totals 7 years, $132M with $60M guaranteed!!!

Calvin Johnson is definitely awesome and there's more tv money coming in next year. If there's a WR that's worth it, it's probably him. But wow.

They had to get it done now to spread out the cap hit. They were handcuff vs the cap this season. With Burleson,Suh and Stafford re-structuring now Calvin re-signing, the Lions should be able to move forward with their FA plans

I was actually wondering about this on the way to work this morning after reading what Garcon & VJax got. I thought he had 1 year left, but was wondering if a guy like Garcon can get that much money, how much is Megatron going to get next year? Got the answer now.

Dollar Dollar bills y'all!

Wow, what a division we're forming here. With this, Brandon Marshall yesterday, and the supermachine Green Bay we have some stellar football coming up.

I almost feel sorry for the Vikes

Lions were there a couple of years ago... I hope for their (MIN) future they can do it faster than the Lions. Peterson's injury really has hurt this team. They could've traded him for some young pieces or some good picks and rebuild but by the time he's back he'll be too old to get much out of him. That's if he comes back at all from that injury. NFC North is a great division, though. Maybe the best in football.

Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew

Cover it with choc'late and a miracle or two

These huge WR contracts are making me think that teams are going be scared off Mike Wallace knowing they would have to pay very big bucks (not Megatron numbers but VJ at least) AND lose their #1 pick.

Geeez... as a Lions fan, I should be stoked, and am to a certain degree. We keep him for 7 more years. But man that's a lotta dough that I wish we coulda

used to land better FAs. But I guess I'm not used to us having such an elite player (since Barry Sanders, I suppose), so I am not used to us dropping that

kind of $$. Kinda nice to see the Fords finally getting their heads out of their asses...

Yikes. I said it when Fitzgerald signed his deal. No receiver is worth that type of money. You have got to be kidding me.

Because with a salary cap, money like that should not be spent on a receiver. 60 million guaranteed? That is insane.

That's easy to say but they had no choice if they wanted to keep him. He was going to make $18M this year and $26M next year if they franchised him and $31M in 2014 with the tag. In that context the deal was not that unreasonable. Even though it's a ton of money the Lions have locked up the greatest WR of this generation for the rest of his career.

And it will significantly hamstring them in other areas.

It actually gives them more cap space this year, so it certainly isn't hamstringing them now, quite the opposite. Both Fitz and Calvin are worth their contracts IMO.

I don't disagree, but the cap goes up every year and his salary stays the same. Also the guaranteed money is deceptive because only the signing bonus is actually guaranteed (Fitz got $10M). The rest is roster bonuses which are only paid if the player is still on the team - to me it's not really any different than salary in terms of the cap.

I took a look at the numbers and this is basically a guaranteed 3 year deal for $17M a year. In the first three years he will earn $51.75 million of the $53.25 million that is guaranteed. Expensive, yes, but hardly the monster deal it's made out to be.

How they got the $60M guaranteed number is that the last two years are voidable by Megaton ( ;) ) but the Lions can guarantee them for an $3.5M each.
