My grandparents and great grandmother always referred to today as Decoration Day. They also called Veterans Day (November 11) Remembrance Day. Anybody else?
The history of Decoration Day / Memorial Day is interesting. State holiday, in every state, from 1868 to 1970, celebrated on May 30. Didn’t switch to last Monday in May until LBJ codified it as a Federal holiday in 1966, effective 5 years later.
I was born 1962; only remember Memorial Day as a Monday holiday signifying the unofficial start of summer.
