Memory Foam Allergies (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
I've had a memory foam pillow for about 8 years now and I love it. Can't sleep without it. It's kind of nearing the end of its life cycle, but I have yet to find one that feels the same. I've bought a couple and they always feel too hard. My current one is so perfectly soft. Wish I remembered who the manufacturer was. But I digress.

So I've longed thought about buying a Tempur-pedic mattress, but a couple years ago, I stayed at a hotel that had one and I wasn't that impressed. Kind of on the fence on whether I really wanted to spend that much money. Well, about a month ago, we were at Kohl's and I saw a memory foam mattress topper that was on sale. It's a Sealy 4 inch top. Forget the normal price, but with the sale and with my Kohl's cash, I ended up paying just over a hundred dollars for it. Figured it would be a good way to test it out to see if I wanted to go all in on the mattress.

After sleeping on it for a week, I really liked the feel. Very soft. But I started to develop a migraine headache. I had that stupid headache for almost 3 weeks. And not like a headache that goes away. It was there constantly. I went to the doctor and he thought it could be Lyme disease or a mosquito borne disease. But after finding no other symptoms, he said to give it a couple more days before I came back and got some more serious tests done.

I tried to think of anything I did different since the headache started and the only thing I could think of was the mattress topper. So I took it off, much to the chagrin of my GF who had fallen in love with it. After two nights, the headaches were gone. Also, I was sleeping much better.

The memory foam was great for my back, but apparently not so great for my allergies. Anyone ever experience this? I looked online and there aren't many mentions of allergies to memory foam. Just trying to figure out a way so I can use this thing.

Also, I'd hate to drop over a grand on a Tempur-pedic mattress only to find out I'm allergic to it.

I don't know why I opened this thread expecting you to be regaling us with stories of the time you spent in Algiers... I need to put more effort into thoroughly reading thread titles.

Off-gassing with memory foam is common
Not sure what this means. Is this something that will eventually go away? Do I just need to let it sit out and breathe? Should I stop taking Ritalin to stop the headaches?
Lots of things outgas when new. Sometimes it wears off and sometimes not. Given your reaction to it, I'd do without. But another manufacturer may use different ingredients which won't bother you. This site seems to cover it pretty well.

Did this coincide with you considering buying an engagement ring? You're probably stressing about that while you sleep and waking up with a headache. I think the solution is to offer your lady to the neighbor in exchange for continued lawn mower maintenance and go about your merry way knowing you'll be headache and lawn-mower-hassle-free for life.

It's either that or you developed some chemical dependancy to the OLD pillow after 8 long years...Maybe the old pillow was full of meth.
