MEMPHIS BBQFest > 2023 > 1 Month Away - $100,000 budget due to inflation! (1 Viewer)

I'm not committing to propping anyone up, but if JoeT and cockrider are in, then why not?  Definitely need to cross cosjobs and icon off the cornhole list.

2nd to last team meeting tonight. Going over a bunch of crap. 67 days till load in!

Excited to be heading down to New Orleans with a couple guys from the team to hang out / help @tipsy mcstagger's team compete at Hogs for the Cause in 3 weeks. Should be a ton of fun for a fantastic cause. Plus I miss my GB Tipsy... been a while since we've gotten to hang out. :banned:

If you're feeling Froggy and want to support our Hogs team, go here and specify "Hogdat Nation" as the team name (fundraising is a competition for this event).

 Cheers!

I am gonna be out there this year as long as I don't need a paddle to get to it.

Been following this off and on for years. So is this an open to fbg invite, or is there a class I need to take or something? Got some vaca to burn and the drive isn't terrible from cincy.

This is generally an open invite!

Access to the booth is very "valuable" (we have to turn people away at $150/pass), but open invite is something I've always offered to FBGs and it's been fun. Things to consider:

@sbonomo and I will be able to show anyone around and hang a bit, but we are generally pretty busy with team stuff, hanging with freinds (i personally have friends coming in from a dozen states that I see once a year), so my time is personally spread thin. Not to mention we try to get out and visit our other friends' booths. This doesn't mean we can't hang. We just like to make sure folks are aware coming in that they will want to be pretty self-sufficient much of the time.

Generally speaking FBG folks will group up a bit, plus booth guests are generally all super friendly. Not to mention there are hundreds of other booths and a huge festival to explore outside our walls. There's a LOT to eat/drink/see/do... most folks are fine. Just like to be up front about our availability on front end.

Also, please try not to come with a lot of guests. If you're traveling with your wife or buddy, sure! But talk to us before planning a trip with 4 of your best buddies. Our booth space is very limited, and access is in high demand. We will have LONG lines to get in during peak times. We often freeze booth entry for hour or two at a time on Thursday and Friday because we'll be at capacity (meaning if you leave you may not be able to get back in for a bit).

We have a FAQ available at our website with more general information about the festival. I say all the above NOT to discourage anyone from coming... just want to have everyone in the right mindset about what to expect. :banned:    We invest thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars to create an experience unlike any other.

Thanks for the link, and I completely understand the time/availability/people request restriction.

I'll go do my homework on the event itself/reread last years thread and see if I can get the Mrs to bite on the idea.

Talking with the team now about hiring bartending staff Thursday and Friday from 6pm till 12am. The team isn't wanting to bartend during peak party hours.

If we do this:
Looking to pay $250 per person, per day ($500 to work 6-12 on Thursday and Friday)
Looking for 2 hot ### chicks who aren't afraid to hustle (mix drinks quickly, they will be busy)
Also looking for 1 dude who will barback (swap kegs, throw beers on ice, etc) and bartend when not barbacking.

Will see how it goes!

Damn! Mothers day weekend. Wife was all on board, as long as it wasn't mothers day weekend. Man that sucks.

Confirmed we are going with hired guns for peak time behind the bar.

Open casting call for 2 attractive ladies with good attitudes and work ethic to tend bar from 5pm-12am on Thursday and Friday. We're going to pay $500 each ($250/night) with a bonus at the end based on performance. Bonus will likely be kicking in another hundred or so each if they're on time, work pretty hard, and have fun doing it. Having ladies send in photos and qualifications.

@sbonomo can confirm, Already have a few very solid options rolling in. Going with some sort of fitted/low-cut "Usual Saucepects" tank top , and cutoff jean shorts most likely.

Instead of hiring a barback, we're going to have a team member back there with them handling barback duties and helping serve drinks. Suddenly we went from nobody wanting to work peak party time shifts, to having to having the team clamoring for those spots.

Another interesting aside. Was on the phone with CDW and Cisco reps yesterday, and they were flat out raving about last year still. The food, the drinks, the party, etc... they were also extremely impressed with how well branded everything was "it was very clear to anyone walking by or inside the booth who the lead sponsors were".

Generally the large vendors like CDW/SHI will partner with key accounts (Cisco, Lenovo, Meraki, NetApp, etc) to host these joint sales meetings / teambuilding events. A big CDW rival, SHI, also had sponsored a large booth at the festival last year and had partnered with Lenovo. Apparently Lenovo saw our setup compared to what they were getting an they got upset. The head guy from SHI was in our booth by friday morning trying to outbid CDW for next (this) year.

Fast forward to this year and CDW not only wanted the same big dinner ($16.5k for 100 people on thursday), but added a second smaller dinner Friday night for 30 folks @ $5500. We just found out that dinner is partnering with Lenovo, who jumped ship from SHI. My buddy then explains that SHI had been frantically reaching out to him for months trying to get us to ditch CDW and we said we have to stay loyal. That explains why... I guess SHI's big partner vendor for the event jumped ship and partnered with a rival just to be in our booth

Not going to lie... hearing the praise about how well run our team is, how professional the team is, how great of a party we throw...etc... we take a lot of pride in that. It's pretty cool having multiple billion dollar corporations fighting to pay you 3-4x the market rate. It's fun watching people's faces while they walk by at night when things are in full swing, or seeing them the next morning pointing and talking about "you should have seen that place last night", etc...  It's cheesy, but I'm really proud of this team and what we've built. Every year it gets easier, more fun, and we up the ante a little higher.

For those coming for your first time... be sure to walk around the festival a bit to get a feel for what the "normal" booth setups are like compared to what we put forth every year.

I will definitely confirm there are some hoties so far!!!!

If I wasn't already on a team...

Things getting into full swing now...
• Ordered heavily branded 1100 22oz stadium cups and 200 Plastic plates (For sponsor dinners)
• Ordered 20L Oak Aging Barrel laser etched with our logo, and 10L Oak Aging Barrel laser etched with CDW's Logo. We will mix Old Fashioneds in them 2 weeks before the event to barrel age them.
• Ordered 3500 custom tyvek wristbands for the event. 3 different types of sponsor wristbands (each with different nights of access, and then our general admission bands.

We've wrapped up the basics of our shirt graphics with the designer around a "Colombian Roast" theme (host country is Colombia). Tweaks underway.

Working on Banner Designs and chasing sponsor money. They still owe $19,250 of the $22,000 signed for and we have until April 8th to get it into the accounts so we can cut the big checks for Team Day when we pay for pretty much everything.

Still have to order the custom LED Foam Light sticks with #GETSAUCED branding.

Got a call tonight with the lead musician (Patrick Dodd) to hammer out details of the music thang.

We found out they positioned our buddies Memphis Fire to the NORTH of us instead of the south, and we have a major Festival Sponsor booth (mitsubishi) to our south. Given the fact that Memphis Fire tent just shuts their music down and dances to our DJs at night (and always enjoy our live music on friday), and given that live music is illegal in the festival (among other things we do), we're going to FLIP OUR 3000sq ft scaffold layout to move our staircase to the South end and open side to the north to open things up toward Memphis Fire. We'll also be hanging blocking cloth along the entire length of our booth on the South end to block out Mitsubishi as much as possible (to avoid complaints, reports).

Submissions still coming in for the Bartending gig... some great, some not so much. Once we close it off, I will share them with the board, obviously. :banned:

So much more to come...

Getting the bartender application image gallery started....

Not a ton of responses but some interesting ones!

Getting moderately attractive girls that can handle high volume well is way more important than hiring really hot ones in my opinion. Nobody is going to be happy with the hotties if the line to get a drink is long.

Agreed 100%. We've been very clear that this is a high volume bar and all girls are current bartenders with multiple years experience (some with decades

HERE ARE THE OPTIONS SO FAR >

NOTE: Sam is a non-starter. Gets too drunk and some personal conflict with couple team members.

So I would say that Emily is perfect if you are looking for a tantric massage therapist (Pic 1) or a Keith Richard's impersonator (Pic 3).

Provided they all have similar bartending skills, I would lean towards Ashley, Torrie & Sam.

:X  @ Torrie.... She's Christo-tastic

Sam is a good freind... she'd be too drunk by 10pm to function unfortunately.

Ashley is in my top 2.
Having a broad like Torrie behind the bar is a good way to monitor how drunk folks are getting, when you start hearing a lot of guys talking about banging her you know they are probably close to their limit. Plus she seems like the one most likely to blow a dude in a port-o-potty

Not going to lie, I was expecting a bit better quality.  It's the South, it's bartending, it's an awesome party, should be awash in Offdee 7+'s.

A few do look like a good time though.

when does the merch go on sale? I can't make it this year, but i'm in for a shirt.

BTW....MIRIAM.

The problem is we're asking them to actually work, and work hard. We've been very clear about that on the front end. True smokeshows aren't going to want to bust their asses slinging drinks to a line 8-10 people deep for 8 hours straight.... Even for $40-45/hr.

I get that and I really didn't mean to come off like a jag.  Would bang them all gladly (ok maybe not the KR lookalike, but all the rest with glee).

Ha! Naw I hear ya. No jag interpretation at all. A few of them are solid 7's in my book, but there are some decidedly average (and below average) ones in there for sure. Everyone has been vetted for bartending experience. Some are more qualified for a high volume bar than others.

When I say high volume... I'm talking about two or three never-ending lines half a dozen to a dozen people deep for hours on end. I'm a VERY quick bartender who cut his teeth as the lead guy behind one of the busiest bars on the University of Tennessee campus during the Peyton Manning era when we were named top party school in the country. I get a huge rush out of extremely high volume bar-work and thrived on powering through a crush... and I even have trouble digging out of some of the crushes we get. These girls are going to work their asses off.

hotness.....I'll be in for one of those as well
We WERE going to go with tone on tone grey logo on grey hat big on front but I started playing with the design a bit... the detail of the logo mandated it being too big in full circle form, so I started playing with the cropped version and fell in love with it. If it comes out half as good as I think, it's going to be my new go-to hat.

My personal grades (this is normal female scale, not "fantasy football dork grading instagram models on unrealistic scale) scale:
Alicia - 5 (likely a solid festival tender, but she's on the downside)
Miriam - 8 (maybe i have a thing for that doe eyed busty latina thing, but other pics reenforce she's a cutie IMO)
Emily - 2 (One of those chicks who LOVES to smoke)
Lauren - 6.5 ( Some pics look cute, some are questionable)
Kodie - 6.5 (Could be anywhere from 5-8 if we had more pics to judge. We don't.)
Ashley 7.5 (Pretty Face, Amazing curves, Could be a bit thick but looks sexy/fun...bonus points for that in this environment)
Haley - 6 (cute, but not standout)
Torrie: 5 (Just doesn't ring my bell)
Jenn: 7 (Adorable self professed "Fun sized" rugby player and weight lifter - reported killer personality bonus points for that)
Allison & Mandy: 7.5-8 (very attractive. Nice due (short &buxom vs tall and leggy)... but very fun and great tenders. Fri only is a bummer.
Heather - 6 (eh)

Perfect world? I'd pick Allison and Mandy because I've seen them up close in action and I know they have folks fawning while still slinging drinks at a commendable speed.

Absent a desire to hire two girls Thursday and two different girls (Allison/Mandy) Friday, I think my vote will be for Miriam and Ashley for different reasons.
