Men's fashion for the 40 and over crowd (1 Viewer)

The thing is, it is extremely hard for guys like me to find clothes and shoes that fit me.  I am 6'8" and have size 15 shoes.  If I try and wear those shorts that Otis linked I would look like John Stockton.

When I go to look for new shoes I go straight for the 14 & up section and it is always bare and full of 1980s looking basketball shoes.

It sucks.
Yeap.  6'5" and wear size 14.  It's not easy and always costs more.

I could see wearing those shoes if they didn't have the wingtip detailing. That shoe looks the spawn of a lawyer's wingtip and his workout shoe getting it on in his closet.
I hear ya. I thought the same initially, but You'd prob be surprised.

Prior to this I've never owned wingtip anything. Never been my style. But, It works.

My wife has been trying to get me past cargo shorts for a while.  But, if we go somewhere with the kids, every damn pocket gets filled up almost immediately.  Phones, wallet, lipstick, and thats just for the wife.  At any given time, I may be carrying 4 cell phones & 3 wallets.

Eta: hell no on sandals.  Maybe flip flops if I'm at the beach but that's it.
Cargo shorts are the fanny pack of shorts. Think on that for a bit.

Just do you man.  There's nothing more attractive that somebody that is comfortable with themselves and their style.  I'm 41 and my casual clothes are generally a black v-neck t-shirt, a pair nice cargo shorts or a pair jeans, and a pair of adidas or nikes.   I know I'm probably not turning many heads with my clothing style--but it's what I'm comfortable in--and I feel like the style is fairly neutral and timeless.
That all sounds fine if you just replace the cargo shorts for actual non-savage grown up shorts.

PS it’s not that you cargo shorts guys are wrong; you’re just about 20 years late. Buy regular grown man shorts. There are tons of great and nice looking performance fabric and stretchy and comfortable options out there today, it’s not just dorky short khaki shorts anymore. YWIA

I'm 46 years old and have never known "fashion" and never will. My clothes are cheap and I really don't care. Jeans, Cargo Shorts, black "athletic" pants (whatever they are called) and t-shirts with print logos. Skechers shoes. Dress up is polos and khakis and black dress shoes. That's it. Nothing fancy nor metro. Works for me.

Are we talking about going places or just running errands?

Cause 90% of the time I dress like I just finished a team practice in a locker room

I've found I tend to dress a bit nicer almost any time I'm in public now, since 90% of my time is spent at home in Boxer Briefs and TriBlend Tees.

If you have any links for these shorts we would love to see them.  I'm interested in updating my summer clothes.

Get rid of logos / graphic tees for outside the home 90% of the time.

I own about 15 of these Bella + Canvas TriBlend Tees. Duplicates in staple colors (charcoal grey / heathered grey / black). They are cheap, insanely soft, just fitted enough to look stylish while still being wearable by stocky guys like myself.

I wear Cole Haan zerogrand wingtip oxfords most times I'm out of the house. Always without socks. Have them in two colors. Super light, comfortable, breathable, and I get ####loads of compliments on them (mostly from ladies).

Basic flops are okay for poolside / cookouts but spare the bare feet in stores/restaurants unless you live by the beach or are in a very casual place. Sandals are included... I avoid sandals altogether because 98% of the time they look dorky as hell.

I've been moving away from jeans toward chinos. Not normally a dockers guy but these have a nice tapered fit, have a touch of stretch to them. Got 4-5 pair in a couple colors.

I've got a few pair of shorts too but find myself wearing chinos in public more unless I'm going to be out in direct heat/sun for extended periods. Two stubborn pair of cargo shorts that are only worn when functionality is needed and I don't care about looking like an overgrown man child.

Grabbed a half dozen pair of these Bayleaf running shorts (5" inseam) for running, working out, yard work, etc. Very light weight, dry fast, good length (not too long not too short), and come lined or unlined.
Three of these links are broken and lead back to this post.

The Linksoul Boardwalker shorts are some of my favorites.  I have them in black and a couple other colors, and wear them all the time.  They’re not cheap, but they just happen to be the ones I got, and I have worn them so much of the past few years, they don’t owe me a cent.  Link: https://linksoul.com/collections/mens-shorts/products/ls651?variant=31822531330123

They’re my go-to shorts these days.  This thread is reminding me it’s probably time for me to pick up a couple more pairs actually.  But with summer ending soon, guess I’ll wait till next season.

J Crew also makes a bunch of mid length stretch shorts that are pretty good, but I don’t like them as much.

And I’m sure there are a million other shorts that look like these types but are cheaper.

It’s 2020. I thought pajama bottoms were basically universally accepted as sleepwear, casual attire, and business formal.

Good grief - $80 for shorts?   I am definitely too old and poor for this thread.  Evidently for looking like an adult too.

Fanny packs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> cargo shorts

Those huge side pockets in cargo shorts are completely useless. The abundance of storage options in a fanny pack are completely useful

I never wear shorts anymore, but when the youngest was smaller, I had all sorts of #### in my side pockets - wipes, stuffies, my phone, snacks, whatever.

I preferred that option over man purses and fanny packs.

Cargo shorts are good if you are hiking or working and need extra pockets for tools or supplies....that's it.

Like I said, the point wasn’t these shorts in particular.  The point is to show the grown up alternative to cargo shorts.  And I’m certain one of you thrifty fellas can find basic shorts that look just like those at a fraction of the cost.

As always, I’m here to help.

This brand is popular for the guys in their 30s and 40s here in SD.   Guys here wear a lot of active wear...super casual that may not apply to other cities.

Agree with no logos, graphics...anything else that screams you are trying to be 20.
Does it help if half of my wardrobe was purchased in my late 20s?

I don’t really give a rat’s ### about fashion and never have. I wear cargo shorts for a few reasons. One is that they are loose and comfortable. Another is that I am married with kids and often end up carrying everyone’s stuff. In those occasions the pockets are nice.

I am not a fashion guy. never have been, never will be.

HOWEVER, I did decide to stop wearing my Dickies shorts this year. I put them on and said, I look silly.

I also started wearing untuckit shirts to work. Big fan

I don't generally wear them, but I'd say the cargo shorts hate has become something of an overblown meme. They can work perfectly for everyday use, depending on what else you're wearing.

I don't know they look pretty ridiculous.

Honestly most of the time the deal breaker for me when thinking about "dressing like an adult" is the shoes.

Because of my 1/2 hairy bird legs, I basically never wear shorts anymore.  Don't bother with more adult pants because of the shoe situation.

So daily Levi's and tshirts it is!

Allbirds is what I now wear 80% of the time in office or on the road in meetings. I work in a casual industry but plenty sport coats, button downs and slacks on the road and these work either way.

Cheap alternative to those $60 shorts + Costco has (or had) champion sweatshorts for &12.97. Everytime my wife went she would grab a pair so I ended up with like 8 of them. I use em for yard work but they’d pass for everyday use .

I get the cargo short hate, part of the problem for skinny ##### like me wearing these other shorts looks like I'm wrapping a bandaid around a stick.  With cargo shorts it leaves room to the imagination that I might have ripped 36 inch thighs underneath all that bagginess.

I have a pair of "cleaner" cargos that are sort of in the middle (only like 6 pockets and not wrinkly) that is passable with a nice golf shirt.  But yah, I get it.

Is this where I can apply for a cargo short waiver?
