Messaging Apps - WhatsApp - Voxer - Signal etc vs just regular text? (1 Viewer)

what is weird is I now get the ... from my android friends when they are replying to my texts (I have an iphone), this is something that has only happened over the last few months.
It's the new RCS between Android and iPhone (if upgraded to iOS 18). This is what I was trying to explain earlier, as an Android user, using WhatsApp prior to these changes recently, allowed a similar experience in the past where you could send high quality pictures and videos, see read receipts, see live typing notifications, and even respond with emojis that you simply couldn't do with regular text.

Same and they are marked s as read now. But not all of my friends that use Android 🤷🏻‍♂️

Here you go

So the iPhone setting needs to change? Cause on my Pixel I've had this for a long while even on mixed device chats

Not all Android users use the stock Google Messages app for texting, and that's the only one where RCS is available at the moment. For example, I've used Textra forever, and I have the hardest time switching every time I try out Messages again. RCS functionality itself still isn't enough to get me to switch at this point. (I think I'd turn off a lot of options like read receipts anyway - do people actually like having the other person know you read their text and are just completely ignoring them? Lol)

I just like a lot of things better about the Textra app

We use discord in my family.

I pay for a persistent Minecraft server that is always online for our family.

We also have a family discord server.

That way when my kids get on with their cousins, uncles, or even 1 aunt everyone can use voice chat to communicate.

It also allows my kids to plan play times with their cousins.

So a question that’s sorta related here, I think, but not worth its own thread….

Can an older iphone without a SIM card, but with wifi, send any messages or makes calls? The situation is that my kid has an old iPhone of mine that he uses to watch videos, listen to music, and play games on, but there is no SIM card so no calls. He’s now at the age where I can leave him home for a bit if I need to run to the store. If he were to need me or his mom, could that phone be used to message or call either of us with any of these messaging apps? If so which one that both a kid as well as a not totally tech savvy dad in his mid 40s could use?
