Messaging Apps - WhatsApp - Voxer - Signal etc vs just regular text? (1 Viewer)

what is weird is I now get the ... from my android friends when they are replying to my texts (I have an iphone), this is something that has only happened over the last few months.
It's the new RCS between Android and iPhone (if upgraded to iOS 18). This is what I was trying to explain earlier, as an Android user, using WhatsApp prior to these changes recently, allowed a similar experience in the past where you could send high quality pictures and videos, see read receipts, see live typing notifications, and even respond with emojis that you simply couldn't do with regular text.

Same and they are marked s as read now. But not all of my friends that use Android 🤷🏻‍♂️

Here you go

So the iPhone setting needs to change? Cause on my Pixel I've had this for a long while even on mixed device chats

Not all Android users use the stock Google Messages app for texting, and that's the only one where RCS is available at the moment. For example, I've used Textra forever, and I have the hardest time switching every time I try out Messages again. RCS functionality itself still isn't enough to get me to switch at this point. (I think I'd turn off a lot of options like read receipts anyway - do people actually like having the other person know you read their text and are just completely ignoring them? Lol)

I just like a lot of things better about the Textra app

We use discord in my family.

I pay for a persistent Minecraft server that is always online for our family.

We also have a family discord server.

That way when my kids get on with their cousins, uncles, or even 1 aunt everyone can use voice chat to communicate.

It also allows my kids to plan play times with their cousins.

So a question that’s sorta related here, I think, but not worth its own thread….

Can an older iphone without a SIM card, but with wifi, send any messages or makes calls? The situation is that my kid has an old iPhone of mine that he uses to watch videos, listen to music, and play games on, but there is no SIM card so no calls. He’s now at the age where I can leave him home for a bit if I need to run to the store. If he were to need me or his mom, could that phone be used to message or call either of us with any of these messaging apps? If so which one that both a kid as well as a not totally tech savvy dad in his mid 40s could use?

I see lots of people who talk about having a WhatsApp group or Voxer or Signal group for group messaging.

Can y'all explain it to me like I'm 5 why those are better than just a regular chat group using text on your phone?

Is the cost of SMS that expensive?

For me, the downside is the network effect. Everyone with a phone number has text ability.

But for the apps, you have to get everyone on the app to be able to communicate with the group, right?

I feel like I'm missing something as I can't see why people would do anything other than the easiest and most inclusive thing and go with text.

Thanks.
Day to day, the apps work better for bigger groups. I can mute threads, add/remove people without remaking the chat, pin a schedule, and search old files. Media stays clear, and I can reply from my laptop. For quick one to one, I still text because everyone has it. At work we send reminders and OTPs, and we use https://sms.to to route via SMS or WhatsApp/Viber from one place. The tracking and built in opt outs made me more comfortable using these apps outside work too.

What’s app is good if you are overseas.

FWIW, I'm seeing lots of ads for Whatsapp recently as a better group text plan.

Still just seems wild to me as text is so easy. And every phone has it.

I was just on a small group meeting thing for a couple of days. We created a group chat group for the 15 people at the thing and it worked perfectly. Zero friction and nobody had to download an app and nobody was left out.

I agree, seem to be pushing a lot of marketing and I don’t know why I would ever use it in lieu of normal texting.

Since you asked to answer like you’re 5 and I failed to do that last time. Now I will finish with, and make sure you eat your veggies!

What about GROUP SHARED NOTES ?

When we go on group vacation, I like to start a group Iphone shared Note.
This note could hold a rough Daily Agenda. it could mention some restaurants that we might eat at, or something like the different flights & times.
It's a great way to share the vacation planning load & also gives people an easy place to follow along so that they aren't 100% dependent on 1 person.
It's a good way to avoid arguments :-) or for people to know what to wear for tomorrow. ▶ "The info is in the Group Note"
And since things don't always go to plan, it is 100% editable by anyone with Read/Write Access........so anyone can move things around & everyone can get a notification & see the changes.

The above is great IF....everyone has an iphone.
What I've found is that if I try to add or share the Note with an Android user, the Android user only gets the info in static like text while the Iphone users can still make edits/updates.

Do any of the other apps mentioned in this thread also include the SHARED NOTE functionality ?
I do use WhatsApp...........and I don't think they include this (i wish that they did)
still no response from anyone about shared NOTES ??

•using native iPhone app?
•using WhatsApp ?

Apps like WhatsApp or Signal let you share pics, videos, voice notes, and even make calls without SMS costs. Plus, some have encryption for privacy. I once tried organizing a trip with friends via text, and it got messy fast—photos scattered, messages lost. Switching to a group app worked way better. For bigger setups, businesses use a sip trunking provider like Telxi for cheap, reliable group communication.

My main fantasy league communicates via a text group which I am left out of because I don't live in the US and they don't want to pay the international fees.

I definitely can see the advantage for Whatsapp and others if there are international people in the group.

My big question was people using it when everyone is in one country.

What happens when someone is on vacation or work travel outside the country?

That was actually the impetus for one of my groups to move away from text - one was traveling internationally so we jumped to Discord.

I don't think either were being used when we left (2007) although I generally go back n July/August and get my esim number added to the group for those 2-3 weeks

I use SMS.To a lot for work stuff or quick updates to a big group. It’s just easier when you’re messaging people who may not all be using the same app. Not everyone wants to download something new, and with bulk sms I know everyone’s getting it no matter what phone or app they have.
