Mets organization = no class (1 Viewer)

The New York Mets fired vice president for player development Tony Bernazard, who has been implicated in recent outbursts involving the team's minor leaguers and closer Francisco Rodriguez.

Omar Minaya announced Bernazard's dismissal at a news conference Monday afternoon in which the general manager and New York Daily News reporter Adam Rubin squared off after Minaya inferred that Rubin wrote stories to try to get Bernazard fired so he could take his job.

AP Photo/Rick SilvaMets executive Tony Bernazard reportedly challenged the club's Double-A team to fight him during a recent postgame tirade.

The news conference took a bizarre turn when Minaya said that Rubin, who wrote the initial story about Bernazard's confrontation in Binghamton, had lobbied in the past to get a personnel job with the Mets.

Rubin told Minaya he was "despicable" for implying that Rubin wrote a story to get Bernazard fired so he could get a job with the Mets.

In an interview with reporters after the news conference, Rubin said he had never asked Minaya directly for a job in baseball.

"I don't know how I'm going to cover the team now," Rubin said.

Earlier in the news conference, Minaya said that the incidents that led to Bernazard's firing "reflects upon my watch, and I take full responsiblity."

Bernazard reportedly pulled off his shirt and challenged the Double-A Binghamton Mets in the tirade, about 10 days before the All-Star break. He in particular targeted middle infield prospect Jose Coronado, according to the report.

Minaya said he told Bernazard of his dismissal Monday morning after notifying Mets ownership of the move Sunday.

"It was tough, because nobody likes to be fired," Minaya said. "He was not happy."

The 52-year-old Bernazard had held his position since December 2004.

Bernazard has been fingered in the media as a key influence behind the firings last season of manager Willie Randolph and pitching coach Rick Peterson.

This year, Bernazard drew criticism because the Mets' farm system has been unable to supply players to replace injured stars such as center fielder Carlos Beltran, first baseman Carlos Delgado, pitcher John Maine, shortstop Jose Reyes and setup man J.J. Putz. The depleted Mets have nine players on the disabled list.

The New York Daily News reported last week that at a recent game at Citi Field, Bernazard, who wanted a seat behind home plate that was occupied by an Arizona Diamondbacks scout, unleashed a profanity-laced tirade against a subordinate who suggested he wait until the half-inning was over to take the seat.

In addition, the New York Post reported that Bernazard and Rodriguez had a heated verbal confrontation last week, when the Mets were in Atlanta.

"Yeah [it happened]. but I'm not going to talk about that,'' Rodriguez said Wednesday, according to the Post. "Not going to get into it."

Bernazard played 10 seasons for Montreal, the Chicago White Sox, Seattle, Cleveland and Detroit.

From 1992 until he joined the Mets, Bernazard was a special assistant to the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Hey, Yankee fan. You know what I find embarassing? ARod, Torre, Hal, Joba, Pavano, $200 Million. Go buy another championship. Oh, whats that? Hasn't worked in 8 years despite by far the highest payroll in the history of the game?

Just because the Yankees are on a roll, doesnt mean you need to dump on my team.

It was embarrassing as hell for the Mets organization, whether a Stankee's Fan posted it or not. The Mets are a mess. Rumors have flown before about how the locker room is a mess so this just goes to show that the mess rolls down hill starting at the front office.

Did you hear about the Mets jerseys at Wal-Mart?

They were recalled because they were a choking hazard.

How many Mets players does it take to do the laundry?

One. However, if there is any folding to do, then all twenty-five show up.

Its on thing to call the Mets an embarassment, the incident is bizarre on so many levels and Minaya sucks as a GM anyway. Its another thing for Yankee fan to say it's an embarassment to NYC. It was a freakin press conference, its not like it'll be a national news story like $2600 seats not getting sold at a brand new stadium - a symbol of the avarice of wall street in the middle of an economic meltdown.

You serious here? All my Mets friends are pissed off about this incident and completely embarrassed by the organization. Im not posting anything new.

I think it's been blown way out of proportion...If this were the Yankees I wouldn't give a #### and I'm sure there would be a 10 page thread about it and people would question wether I was sincere in not giving a ####.It's about winning and losing - If the Mets were 15 games over .500 this wouldn't be as big a deal but, fans and media are looking for targets... AND the fact that it's percieved that a media guy was fingered means, all the NY media has to get behind him and make the story bigger...Kay even had to take time during the Yankee game to build up and talk about this "HUGE" New York story.BIG DEAL.

I dont know man. Minaya's statement was a shot at Rubin and it could ruin both their careers. I think its a pretty big story. Only the Mets can do the right thing and #### up so royally. And Im not taking shots at the Mets as a Yankee fan. This entire organization has been going downhill this year and it starts at the top. This is word from word told to me by my Met fan friends and it came to fruition yesterday.

Pretty cool article by Rubin today:

I want to get something straight.

Everything I wrote about Tony Bernazard - bombshell stories that appeared in the pages of the Daily News over the last week - is accurate.

My reporting was solid, met the journalistic standards of sourcing and beyond and was untainted by any personal agenda on my part.

The Mets fired Bernazard Monday, after conducting an investigation that presumably reflected the damning information contained in my stories.

But instead of focusing on the horrors Bernazard inflicted upon Mets farmhands and team employees, Minaya tried to redirect the story from Bernazard's reprehensible actions - which were validated or the Mets wouldn't have fired Bernazard - to me. In an attempt to link my reporting to occasional discussions with Mets front office people about possible careers in baseball, Minaya basically left the impression that I had written the stories with some kind of ulterior motive in mind.

"Adam has lobbied for the player development position," Minaya said. "I scuffled with it early on. I had to think about that."

I was dumbfounded, as was just about everyone else in the room.

As I told the reporters who descended upon me after Minaya left the press conference, I have never, ever, asked Omar Minaya for a job. Or even career advice. Frankly, I've never been very close to him.

What I have done, and what Mets COO Jeff Wilpon acknowledged later yesterday, is ask Wilpon for "career advice." My question: Is it even remotely feasible for a baseball writer to get into an administrative job with a team - any team - down the road and what would I need for that to be achieved?

Wilpon once invited me to his office at Citi Field for an advisory session. I never took him up on it.

I also appear on the Mets' television station, and I asked Jeff Wilpon whom I should talk to at the network if I wanted to explore television as a part of my career. He told me to talk to SNY exec Curt Gowdy Jr., who told me basically that I was a bit "too flat."

But again, none of this had any bearing whatsoever on any reporting that I have done while covering the Mets. That coverage included these bombshells of the past week:

Bernazard took off his shirt, challenged members of the Double-A Binghamton Mets to a fight and called out individual players using a slang word for a woman's anatomy.

He berated another Mets employee in a profanity-laced tirade after the co-worker simply asked that a scout not be bounced from a seat behind home plate that Bernazard wanted until after the inning ended. In full public view. The underling's mother even thought it was deplorable.

In April 2006, when Bernazard was asked to identify himself in the visiting clubhouse of a minor-league team in Lakewood, N.J., he refused to respond and went toe-to-toe with an employee whose job was to keep strangers out of the clubhouse. After the attendant finally asked if Bernazard was the "bus driver" for the Mets' minor-league team, Bernazard launched into a tirade and called the employee a "stupid f. You stupid m.f."

The minor-leaguers Bernazard oversaw lived in fear of losing their jobs because they were constantly told they were disposable. How do I know? They told me.

Their parents told me. Others in uniform at the various levels of the Mets told me. Scouts who observed instances told me. Minaya did not identify one piece of inaccurate information in any of The News' stories.

Monday, after learning about what had happened at the press conference, one of the whistleblowers in the Binghamton incident summed it up best: "You didn't get Tony fired. Tony did. Don't let them take the focus off that."

It was embarassing as a Met fan or a baseball fan. It was not embarassing as a NYer. Minaya,Benazard, Manuel, the whole front office need to go. I know all these things. I dont need some self-righteous Yankee fan calling out the Mets. We do that well enough on our own.

People shouldn't be surprised that the world of office politics and backstabbing exists in the world of baseball.

I'm sure this goes on all the time behind the scenes in the backrooms.
