I thought I'd just share a little story with you - we have a few guys in our league that are Dolphin fans and we always tease them about how they "let" Wes Welker walk and now what a great player he is (ie leading receiver in receptions the past 3 years etc). It really gets them going.

Usually they will respond with something like "Davone Bess is the same player but at a fraction of the price" or "Camarillo was on pace for a Welker type" season before he got injured.

Over the past year myself and some other leaguemates cooked up a scenario of how great the dolphins cold have been if they hung on to Welker.

1. They traded Welker for 2 draft picks (one of them is Beck ie QB of future)

2. Losing Welker the Dolphins decide it is better to pass up on Brady Quinn and draft a KR/PR specialist Ted Ginn (fail)

3. Because they have Beck the following year in the draft they pass up on Matt Ryan (fail)

4. Brady Quinn was essentially traded for Peyton hillis

So we tease them saying they could have the following lineup

Matt Ryan

Peyton Hillis

Wes Welker

Brandon Marshall

It's a hoot - it really gets them going.

The Dolphins drafted Samson Satele with the Patriots draft pick, not Beck.
You are killing Macdaddy's giddy little story...BTW, had Browning Nagle (fnagle the bagel), been killed in a hunting accident weeks before the draft, Ron Wolf would have gotten the go ahead to trade up and draft Favre...just sayin'.

AS a dolphin fan, the trade of wes welker was sad but needed. If we only had the talent these days that could get us multiple draft picks.

Most dolphin fans look at the non-drafting of Drew Brees as the beginning of the end to the franchise. If Wannstache would have made the decision to get some competition at QB for Jay Fiedler instead of picking some cornerback stiff who did nothing we would be talking about a different dynasty (the dolphins and pats were fighting it out for the division in those days. Brees would have been the tiebreaker).

In more recent times, the Hiring of Cam Cameron over mike Tomlin is the bigger mistake of the recent past.

Not to mention that even had the pick been Beck, meaning they missed out on Matt Ryan for this convoluted scenario, they would have had to pass on Jake Long to get Ryan.Personally, I'd much rather have Long.

As already pointed out the Dolphins didn't use the second-rounder they got in the Welker trade on Beck. But even if they had the Beck selection played no role in the decision not to draft Ryan. Beck was a Mueller/Cameron selection. Beck didn't figure at all into Parcells' plans hence the selection of Henne in the second round after the team passed on Ryan. And weren't the Dolphins clearly right to pass on Brady Quinn (though they still blew the pick)?

I'm not saying the story doesn't have holes but its pretty entertaining to watch dolphin fans go crazy when you point out all the miscues and what their team could potentially look like.

I need to find some links to the Cam Cameron hiring over Tomlin and passing on Brees in the draft. That would be money.

I remember them passing on Brees in the draft so vividly. My wife (then girlfriend) can attest to how outraged I was.

Then to pass on him again in free agency, for Culpepper of all people. Ugh.

:goodposting: Welker is a good WR but he is no superstar difference maker. I believe a big part of Welker's success was having Moss draw the coverage and he hasn't exactly lit the league up this year without Moss. Wake me up when Welker gets inducted into the HOF.

Imagine you could do this to every team.Dolphins' problems run deeper than a handful of draft picks.

Passing on Drew Brees in free agency for Culpepper trumps all. That alone set the franchise back 5 years in my opinion.

Imagine what Brees could have done with Ricky Williams there during his pre retirement days when he was lighting up the league and not weed.

Horrible decision. The coaching decisions there have been horrible too although I think they finally got this one right. Sporano is a great coach.

I live in AZ and one of the sports radio stations plays the draft from a couple of years ago with some selective editing. " With the fith pick in the 2008 draft, the AZ Cardinals select, Adrain peterson RB Oklahoma"

Well we know that didnt happen, Levi"lead feet" Brown was the selection at 5.

Teams pass on players all the time and regret it. Arron Rodgers looking like someone killed his dog on draft day after Alex Smith goes 1st and he drops into the 20's of the first round. That may turn out to be the biggest miss by over a dozen teams in last 20 years. time will tell, but it sure is looking like it.

Shoot, we didn't want him anyway. We got Matt Jones!

You can pretty much play this "What if" game with any team, and it can be kind of fun. I know we Eagles fans often look back at all the WRs we passed up in favor of Todd Pinkston and Freddie Mitchell and think about what might have been. :lmao:
