[Miami RB] How is the backup competition looking? (1 Viewer)

Is it Sammy Morris, Travis Minor or does Gerald Riggs Jr. have a shot?
I read these yesterday:The Dolphins are reportedly happy with Morris

Published Wed Jul 12 10:39:00 a.m. ET 2006

(Rotoworld) The Dolphins are reportedly happy with Sammy Morris as Ronnie Brown's backup.

Impact: He's seperated himself from Travis Minor and the group of undrafted free agents on the roster. While the Dolphins may still look to acquire Michael Bennett, Morris is currently worth a look as a handcuff to Brown in deep leagues.

Dolphins | Morris to remain backup running back

Published Wed Jul 12 8:42:00 a.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) The Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins are happy with RB Sammy Morris as their backup. They feel no urgency to acquire another backup running back before the start of training camp

Travis Minor isn't a candidate to be backup

Published Wed Jul 12 10:41:00 a.m. ET 2006

(Rotoworld) Travis Minor isn't a candidate to be Ronnie Brown's backup this season.

Impact: The Miami Herald calls him a spare part, and it's quite possible Minor doesn't make the Dolphins.

I think those are from an article also in the blogger from the Miami Herald. Here is the quote:

Though Kay-Jay Harris and Gerald Riggs Jr. weren't anything special in minicamps -- and Travis Minor is a spare part -- the Dolphins like Sammy Morris and feel no urgency to acquire another backup running back before camp. . . .

And, here is a Sporting News blurb quoted above about Bennett (also on blogger):

CAMP CONFIDENTIAL: Expect the Dolphins to make a run at Saints RB Michael Bennett late in camp. The team already has talked to the Saints, and it will become obvious as camp goes on that the Dolphins need someone better than Sammy Morris to back up Ronnie Brown. . . .

nice job wannabee

as a Dolphin homer, I am 110% sure that, unless the team trades for/signs a veteran (Bennett/OSmith), that it will be Morris as Brown's backup and "in-game relief runner"

First let me say, am I the only one who can't believe that Travis Minor is still in the NFL? Second, doesn't Sammy Morris also leave a bad taste in your mouth? and lastly, I would love to see Riggs Jr. step up during training camp.

Dolphins | Morris looking to secure backup RB role

Published Thu Aug 3 12:51:00 a.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Keith Van Brimmer, of TCPalm.com, reports Miami Dolphins RB Sammy Morris is trying to secure his role as the team's No. 2 running back behind starting RB Ronnie Brown. "I feel that I'm in the best condition of my career," Morris said after Wednesday's morning practice, Aug. 2. "This year was the hardest I'd worked in the offseason. I'm confident in my abilities." Although he's an established special teams player, Morris hasn't been eye-popping in the backfield in his six previous NFL seasons. It's thought that Miami will do something to address its lack of backfield depth once the waiver period begins, with head coach Nick Saban saying signing another team's castoff isn't out of the question. Morris said he can't be concerned with that kind of talk. He needs to concentrate on the opportunity that is sitting in front of him, the opportunity to make Saban believe he doesn't need to go shopping before the start of the season.

If Brown gets hurt the Fins could be in trouble. There's not much depth at all behind him. Morris is a role player who can contribute but Miami would be much better seved if there was a better option between Brown and Morris. If Morris has to be their primary RB for an extended period of time it will be a difficult situation.

Last week Saban was on a local FM radio morning show (BIG 105.9 for anybody who cares) chatting with the morning DJ's. This is a non-football show so it was pretty light (station had just signed as FM radio partner to broadcast the games) there wasn't much hard football stuff but Saban did say one thing that stuck in my head and that I've been meaning to post here...

He commented that he (Saban) doesn't consider runningback to be a "one man position in the NFL". He said because of injuries, # of carries, etc he thinks it imperative to have at least 2 guys that can carry the ball. When the DJ asked if Morris is that guy, Saban said (paraphrase) "we hope he is, but if he isn't we can certainly pick up a veteran to help us out".

I thought this interesting on several levels.

I don't for a moment consider this anything remotely near a RBBC situation, but on the other hand it's not the kind of comments you expect to hear surrounding a player (Ronnie Brown) that many are prediciting to get 300 carries this season. It sounded to me like if Saban had his way he would split his carries 70/30 with his RB1 and RB2. But the 2nd interesting tidbit was that it didn't sound like a ringing endorsement for Morris to be that RB2 and get those carries.

As to the main question of this thread: of the RBs on the team right now Morris is unquestionably the RB2 and I don't think there is any threat currently on the roster to that position. But I think there is a very real possibility that the Fins try to pick up a camp casualty vet before the season starts and that whomever becomes the RB2 could see a handful of carries each week.

From RotoWorld:

Chris Brown's agent says his client would like to be traded to the Dolphins.

This should make Ronnie Brown owners shudder, but it's very unlikely. Brown can asked to be traded all he wants, but he's still Tennessee's best change-of-pace back and we doubt they want to deal him.
